Do you live in: Addlestone, Weybridge, Shepperton or ByFleet? Please can you suggest places (indoor and outdoor) to visit with two under 5's. Best parks in the area? Museums? Places of historic interest?
Any suggestions much appreciated.

There was a place called Playtime (soft play center) in Shepperton but I haven't been there for a while. It was nice and clean though and did great coffee.

nannynick · 25/02/2009 19:48

Thanks. I'm nannying near Chertsey, so more places in the Chertsey area are much appreciated. I would like to avoid the commercial indoor softplay type places - far prefer a gymnastics facility which has a under 5's playgym session (such as Rushmoor Gymnastics, Pheonix Gym).

I care for a 1 and 4 year old... so need things they can both do.

Can you provide more info about Rugrats... what's there, cost etc?

Walk along the canal from coxes lock by millpond in Addlestone up towards New Haw.

There is a new playground in Chertsey down the very end of Mead Lane (I think) you can then walk over the fields to the marina.

In the school holidays at Addlestone Leisure Centre they have a boucy castle and other toys out in one of the halls, usually very quiet and chilled.

TBH we always decamp to Weybridge Park!

Addlestone Toy Library on a Tuesday.

nannynick · 13/04/2009 20:36

Have found the playground on the meads - the one with the boat type structure. Is that the one you mean CarGirl?

Weybridge park - where is it (other than Weybridge obviously), is it the one near Tesco/M&S at Brooklands?

Mumsnet local doen't seem to have a great deal on it for the area - perhaps we can all find places to add to it. Add to Mumsnet Local map

CarGirl · 13/04/2009 20:41

Weybridge Park - you of all people have never been to WEybridge Park!!!!!!!!!

It's just off Weybridge high street - could be call Churchfields????? Park in the pay & display behind Weybridge Library & museum and there is a footpath that runs along the back or take the pavement and go via the front gates.

Fab sand pit & paddling pool as well as great playground equipment.

You know about the playground on the outskirts of Staines with the water area???

Sorry too local to the names of anything!

nannynick · 13/04/2009 20:58

I live about 10 miles away (that's my excuse) so still getting to know the area.

No don't know of playgrounds in Staines - apart from a small one by the Scrapstore / railway. Commercial Road Playground (have added to Mumsnet Local)

CarGirl · 13/04/2009 21:01

Lammas Park off Wraysbury Road B376, very busy on hot days but we have wetsuits

I'm still trying to think of more places....

Churchfields/Weybridge park is legendary - it is fab for a wide age range.

CarGirl · 13/04/2009 21:03

Toad Hall in goldsworth park has closed now too.

I suppose I did toddler groups a lot!

There used to be a fabulous one in Thorpe Village on a Tuesday if it's still running

nannynick · 13/04/2009 21:04

Please do add them to Mumsnet Local, adding things is easy, honest. Then I can find them on the map easily.

I thought that I heard that the playground by the lake at Toad Hall (Goldsworth Park, Woking) has recently been upgraded. Anyone been there recently who can confirm?

CarGirl · 13/04/2009 21:07

That can be tomorrows challenge then!

scienceteacher · 13/04/2009 21:27

I'm in Staines. It's been a while since I had PFBs (younger ones were neglected ), but one of the good places in the area is Gogmore Farm in Chertsey. It is a really good SMP playground with a super area for toddlers, and a separate one for older children. It is a lovely walk on either side of the stream with duck feeding opportunities (there is a little landing where you can stand). There is a cafe open during warmer weather, and toilets. Parking is paid, but not too much (just remember some change).

Lammas in Staines is good too. The playground is not quite as toddler friendly as Gogmore Farm, but it is otherwise very thorough. The splash park is very nice and it doesn't get too crowded during termtime. I'm not sure when it opens. There are other attractions, such as crazy golf. It's a great place to picnic and to feed the ducks on the Thames.

There is a very nice (original) playground in Laleham, on the river, right next to the campgrounds. The Canada geese can be a bit scary though.

Windsor Great Park now has a playground, which looks lovely, near the Obelisk. There are also picnic tables nearby, and it is steps away from the facilities at Savill Garden.

Runnymede Pleasure Grounds in Egham is very popular. It gets lots of weekend visitors, although I think of it as a big green space. There are cafe facilities with a bouncy castle, and there is a paddling pool. It is fun to wander down to the Runnymede Hotel to watch boats go through the lock. And talking about boats, French Brothers do very reasonable toddler cruises for a few pounds.

There are lots of other playgrounds in the area but they are very 'ordinary' - good but not something you would travel to.

Another proper gym is Spelthorne Gym in Ashford. When I did this, they used to have a fab toddler session on Friday afternoons. It is a lot less whiffy that Heathrow (which, in my day, only opened on Saturdays).

The main attraction in the areas you have mentioned is the Thames. The road between Weybridge and Walton is great, and I'm sure you could potter around for a while near Walton Bridge watching the comings and goings on the River.

PlumpRumpSoggyBaps · 13/04/2009 21:39

Tis a lovely walk between Weybridge and Walton.I'm just round the corner from there. Knock on my door and I'll give you a cuppa!

Also check out Xcel Leisure centre (aka Elmbridge Leisure centre)- haven't tried them yet but they have drop-in sessions of various sorts for the young ones. It's between Walton and Molesey.

nannynick · 13/04/2009 21:55

Talking of walks, recently I've done Englefield Green (carpark by Holloway campus) to Magnacarta NT Tearoom. The children seem to like that - they like walks with steps.
Further away they like Box Hill - NT Stepping Stones Carpark up to NT Visitor Centre and back via the slope down Box Hill towards Rykers Cafe. Photo: Stepping Stones

somewhere there is a passenger ferry - think it's shepperton??? I remember it being quite pricey but not much else about it.

nannynick · 14/04/2009 19:45

Have been on that ferry, I can't remember how much it was, couple of pounds I think.

Out of area, a nice walk is Hurley Lock to Temple Lock (and back again). It is a little over 1/2 mile. At this time of year, both lock keepers cottages have a little cafe / icecream stall.
Did this walk this afternoon, it was lovely.

CarGirl · 15/04/2009 12:32

Have you been to fairoaks airport to hanger cafe to watch the small aircraft & go for a walk along the lane?

nannynick · 15/04/2009 19:47

That sounds a good idea. Where do you park the car... walkable from the carpark near Stanners Hill? Map

OP posts:
CarGirl · 15/04/2009 22:27

I have only ever parked at the airport and walked up and down the footpath bit - it goes across the end of one of the footpaths which can be great fun and there are often horses in the fields so take some nibble for them too! The cafe is lovely but they're not fast so avoid going for a hot cuppa at lunch time! THey haven't realise the potential market for themed birthday teas yet.

The footpaths definately go somewhere as I've seen lots of people with dogs stopping off at the cafe en route.

I will keep thinking. Have you tried Ottershaw Park at the memorial grounds? Some nice wooded areas around it. Also Ripley Village green is nice for a picnic a bit of playground action and a walk in the woods.

nannynick · 29/04/2009 19:17

Have now been to the Weybridge park (Churchfields) and that was good.

Today we went for a drive to Hounslow Urban Farm. That was quite good and low cost compared with some other farms we could have visited. If you want a no-frills farm visit with young children, then I recommend Hounslow Urban Farm. Just don't go expecting there to be softplay! It's a farm and just a farm.
Take your own flask of coffee - they only have a machine and the coffee from that is horrible!
