Romantic hotel or guest house in Edinburgh...any ideas?

My brain has turned to mush looking at these search engines for too long...help needed

Going to Edinburgh next week (yes last minute, I am not organised!!) to see a show and really need to find somewhere nice to stay for two nights, just me and DH first time in two years....something that won't break the bank and that has parking nearby...we will drive down and then walk/ bus/taxi round town if need be!

Any ideas welcome...or we might end up sleeping in the car! thanks!

here?

Very handy for the Playhouse but too expensive? You can sometimes get deals.

shonaspurtle · 23/02/2009 23:18

Malmaison. It's not cheap, and it's down by the harbour in Leith so it's not all that central (but Edinburgh's a small city).

But I have a soft spot because dh & I had a romantic night away there a few years ago. It was lovely & lots of good places to eat nearby.

Prosecco thats lovely, will definitely bear in mind, a bit too much this year though was looking at around £160 for two nights....maybe I'm being a bit unrealistic....

what about no53 Frederick St here it's a really well located b&b right off Princes st, the owner is friendly and informative and the breakfasts were good when I was last there. The owner also does really nice self catering appts which we also stayed in. Think it was around £80/night and we had no complaints

The george is bang in the middle of town, 5 minutes walk from the Playhouse and is lovely (although their website isn't actually that great, its a very nice hotel)

or Le Monde is right across the road from the George and is very stylish and luxurious.

midnightexpress · 03/03/2009 13:36

Prestonfield? Is that what it's called? Hang on a minute...

here - I've never been but have heard good things.

JustCallMeGoat · 03/03/2009 13:38

channings is nice and in a lovely part of the new town. malmaison is v. nice and boutiquey.

george st gets abit rowdy and footballers wives on the weekend.

what are you going to see?

DSM · 03/03/2009 13:38

Oh, yes the Prestonfield is very beautiful.

Slightly out of town though, as in you wouldn't walk into town from there, though like Shonaspurtle said before Edinburgh is very small and you could walk anywhere.

nailpolish · 03/03/2009 13:47

id stay at The Scotsman if i had the choice of them all

here

or waht about tigerlily for something a bit different?

nailpolish · 03/03/2009 13:49

the apex hotels in the grassmarket are slightly cheaper and v nice

nailpolish · 03/03/2009 13:50

macdonald holyrood is near the parliament and slightly cheaper too

Lilliput · 03/03/2009 13:56

Prestonfield is very romantic. Stayed there for my birthday once. Ds was only twelve weeks old and the romance was killed by me expressing breastmilk into the beautiful bathroom basin.

midnightexpress · 03/03/2009 13:57

Oh yes, Scotsman is nice, and I can recommend the spa. Very central too.

frumpygrumpy · 03/03/2009 14:02

There is a sweet little B&B in Gilmore Place called The Town House if you need cheap. Its very close to town (opposite end of Princess Street to The Playhouse but still very easy to bus/walk).

Please ignore all the mayhem going on in town. 'They' think its a good idea to put in tram lines and 'they' have arsed up the whole of town to do it. Roadworks all over but it won't affect your journeys too much because the distances you are travelling are covered by loads of buses.

frumpygrumpy · 03/03/2009 14:03

The Bruntsfield Hotel is maybe a little dated but also won't break the bank and is very, very central surrounded by eating places.

frumpygrumpy · 03/03/2009 14:09

The Witchery do rooms, its right up at The Castle.......very romantic but could be pricey.

northender · 03/03/2009 14:19

FG did you hear about Brucie at Hampden in July?

Sorry for hijack!

nailpolish · 03/03/2009 15:29

Bruce Forsyth?

mrsdisorganised · 03/03/2009 16:11

Thanks all for the lovely ideas will remember for next time when we've saved up a bit....aiming for the Glasshouse! We have booked now into 23 Mayfield guesthouse...will report when we get home

mrsdisorganised, glad, hope the weather is kind and that you don't look at the tram chaos. It can be a beautiful city (minus the tram chaos) but I expect you won't be looking at the city..........lol!

northender Hullo! I have been looking for you! I started a thread searching for you the minute I heard about the tour, but who knows where it is now. I got tickets for Dublin before I heard about Hampden but I think I'm going to grovel for my trusty babysitter to honour me for Hampden too!!! I'm not going to London or Glastonbury. Are you going to anything? Daft question, I'm SURE you must be

frumpygrumpy · 03/03/2009 23:12

this is the sweet b&b but I see you don't need it......this time!

unpaidworker · 04/03/2009 00:17

Norton House Hotel - Fab.

HolyGuacamole · 04/03/2009 01:06

The Glasshouse is gorgeous, luxurious, modern and right next to the Playhouse, really central and has parking right next to it. Have stayed there a few times for romantic weekends away

Have stayed in both Apex hotels and they are alright, not romantic or anything but good for the price.

Haven't stayed at Le Monde or Tigerlily but both look fab and they are great places to go for a drink!!

HolyGuacamole · 04/03/2009 01:08

Whoops, I missed the Glasshouse already having been mentioned
