Travel Insurance at 34 weeks PG

Hi,

Does ANYONE know how to organise travel insurance for 34 weeks pregnant? I only want a little bit of sun somewhere warm... don't mind being limited to Europe if necessary, just don't know whether I need travel insurance or if I can actually get it.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

Well, the airline doens't seem to be the problem in this case, BA have a good policy of either 34 or 36 weeks I think, it's just the blinkin' insurance. And then again, surely if we are in Europe we don't need it? Wouldn't we use our E111? We just wouldn't be able to claim the cost of our holiday back? Dazed and confused.....

I thing Egg do. I travelled when I was quite heavily pregnant with dd. Can't remember how far gone though and Egg were the only people I could find to insure me. I flew with BA who were brilliant. They took me to the front of the check-in queue and apologised for not being able to up-grade me but gave me some vouchers to use in one of the restaurants instead! They made me feel like a VIP. I'm travelling at 30 weeks this time, on my own with dd on Easyjet. I don't think that's going to be such a pleasurable experience!

Have a good holiday and enjoy the sun!

Although it would cover maternity care an E111 won't give you full coverage of the costs, or pay for, for example, additional accommodation if you are discharged but not yet fit to travel back, or for your family whilst you are in hospital, or having to cancel and rebook flights and/or air ambulance. Have a look here for details country by country as to how much you may have to pay up front and then perhaps claim back the rest.

This list is very helpful Lizs. Will see what I can find out. Scraggy x

Pamina,

Try AXA Insurance on 0800 068 3911 or Insure and Go on 0870 442 7452. They both cover up to 32 weeks.

Good luck! Scraggy x

The Form E111 covers you for any treatment that becomes necessary during the course of your visit. This includes all maternity care, renal dialysis and oxygen therapy (see below).

Hurrah!!! Thank you Lizs!!! Just need to find a travel agent who agrees!!!

Just wanted to add to this, I don't believe Insure and Go do cover up to 32 weeks - I've just had a look at the policy wording (here ) and it states 24 weeks.

Trailfinders definitely do cover up to 32 weeks, AXA cover up to "two months" before the due date (which is not exactly the same thing but probably close enough) and seem to exclude "bodily injury" resulting from pregnancy, I haven't checked what Trailfinders' position on bodily injury is!

Holly290505 · 30/03/2005 20:14

Trailfinders policies are 'effected by AXA' so I guess the same things will apply. Having finally convinced DP we need some sun I am now struggling with the fact we will be returning at 33 weeks. Arrgh. Just out.

Don't you think it's ironic that airlines (some of them) will fly a pregnant lady who is in late stages ie; up to 36 weeks
but yet travel insurers will only cover you up to a maximum of 32!
it appears to me that they don't want to pay out should anything happen.
so all these low risk people who go on holiday and don't claim a bean are lining the pockets of the insurers. isn't it time they gave something back and let pregnant women enjoy as much as they can!!!
Has anyone found an insurer that covers beyond 32 weeks(and 3 days)?

franch · 24/04/2005 19:40

We're off to a US wedding in July when I'll be 33 weeks - we haven't found an insurer yet either - may resort to asking a broker - will let you all know if I come up with something - please do likewise!

franch · 24/04/2005 19:45

Hmm. Here 's our answer I think, from the British Insurance Brokers Association website:

"You won't get cover if you have been advised against travelling, are within the last two months of pregnancy, or are travelling to obtain medical treatment abroad."

Bugger.

MarsLady · 24/04/2005 19:48

ooh Franch, a wedding in the US... will you be bringing me back a pressie? huh? huh? huh?

franch · 24/04/2005 19:49

Mars you don't miss a thing do you???

MarsLady · 24/04/2005 19:50

Big kisses to Ruby!

shorty3 · 25/04/2005 07:06

have found that direct line and lloyd travel insurers will insure upto 32 weeks for pregnancy.
after that you are only insured for non prgnancy related issues. form e11 does cover all aspects.
only thing we need to worry about is getting home

franch · 25/04/2005 14:13

Yes there do seem to be plenty that will cover up to 32 weeks / 2 months before EDD; beyond that we're stuck I think. The statement on the BIBA site seems pretty categorical

Rhumba · 25/04/2005 20:52

Sorry to be gloomy but I did read of a lady who travelled to the US when 28 weeks pregnant and went into to labour. The insurance company refused (initially I don't know if they managed to appeal) to cover the £350,0000 cost of three month Special care as the baby wasn't named on the policy. May just be worth checking out when asking!!

Bumblelion · 14/08/2006 18:20

I had a nightmare when I was 33 weeks pregnant and flew back from Majorca. Only went for 1 week, travel insurance no problem, but what the travel company (JMC) forgot to tell me was that Spain is a catholic country and are quite tight on letting you fly at 34 weeks (even if flying home). Spent a lovely week with my mum and 2 children (late treat in the summer holidays), flew out okay but when I tried to fly home from Palma the flight assistant (at the booking in desk) would not let me fly without a valid "fit to fly" certificate. Long story short - got certified at the airport, wouldn't accept the certificate, had to get a cab into Palma to a private clinic, got checked over (everything fine), missed our flight, had to find alternative flights home the following day (with my mum and 2 children), could only get a flight to Norwich (live near Gatwick) and then spent 5 hours in a cab (which was longer than the actual plane journey). JMC accepted reponsibility when I complained that it was more distressing for me not being able to fly when I should have been, lost a day's money because I was due at work and I wouldn't have flown if I wasn't well enough and they should have told me before I went that I needed a private certificate proving I was fit to fly.

Medulla · 14/08/2006 18:29

I couldn't even get travel insurance to go on a camping holiday in France last year! I was 31-33
weeks and travelled over on the ferry!
