Is it odd to take a solo week on holiday to the beach?

I have a favourite holiday destination. It’s a little island with a couple of hotels, but most people rent a villa. A few beaches and good local restaurants.

I have a busy job and DH doesn't fancy visiting the island again. Is it weird if I take myself off for a week?

I’m just imagining staying in a cottage on my own and driving to the beach for a couple of hours when I fancy. Otherwise I can cook and read my book or maybe have a glass of wine and early nights!

Do it! (And I imagine thousands of women have just googled Virgin Gorda and are planning their fantasy trip!)

SallyAnnDrivesACar · 03/09/2026 21:29

Do it, why not ?

worldsgonemadnow · 03/09/2026 21:46

Sounds amazing! Do it!

You're telepathic 😄

Oh definitely not odd and in fact my dream to have a week totally alone in a brand new place with a few new books, places to walk and swim, restaurants to have dinner and wine on my own, maybe some live music to enjoy and a bed to myself for a whole week! Absolutely heavenly!

While it’s far from odd it’s not commonplace in my circle for most people I know to take a week off and have a solo weeks holiday. I know quite a few people who have gone solo on travelling adventures from one place to the next but I don’t know many who have done what you’re planning (most have families and have to use annual leave covering holidays shared with partners, some have caring responsibilities for elderly parents, some couldn’t afford a holiday for one in addition to the family holiday, lots of reasons why people don’t but it’s a shame!).

I’m very jealous 😂

Fabulous!

BaileyHorse · 03/09/2026 22:23

Sounds heavenly. Book it now!

MyLuckyPeachOtter · 03/09/2026 22:25

Go for it! I think somewhere you’ve been before is a great first solo holiday - it takes the pressure off somewhat.

biggestcatmom · 03/09/2026 23:02

Sounds absolute bliss to me - go for it!

Cotopaxi · 03/09/2026 23:18

I did it once years ago. Bliss.

I’m single but did a week on my own in Italy this year whilst my teens were away with friends, it was amazing.

PersephoneParlormaid · 04/09/2026 07:31

Plenty of people cruise solo, so go for it.

Lostsadandconfused · 04/09/2026 07:51

Not at all, I go to Bali (from Australia) by myself whenever I can.

Shellityhorn · 04/09/2026 07:59

I do it as often as possible, but my beach is stormy, windswept and for walking!

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 04/09/2026 08:10

Why do you think it’s odd OP? Single people go on holiday by themselves, it isn’t odd to go away alone, it just feels that way to you because you’re used to being with your husband. Embrace it 😍

Terfarina · 04/09/2026 09:11

That sounds like heaven - do it!

Berlinlover · 04/09/2026 09:14

Not at all, it’s my idea of heaven.

PloddingAlong21 · 04/09/2026 09:26

Nope. I also do stuff like cinema on my own if nobody wants to see something and I do.

I would only say weird IF it meant you could not plan a family holiday as didn’t have enough leave and you opted for time on your own for a week ENTIRELY instead of with other half/family. If it’s as well as - totally normal.

minipie · 04/09/2026 11:44

In my 20s I’d have thought this was odd.

In my 40s it sounds AMAZING.

ShortLoveStoryset · 04/09/2026 12:16

Life is too short to be unhappy

Book the holiday & enjoy yourself

letmeletmeletme · 04/09/2026 12:22

I'd never heard of Virgin Gorda but it looks stunning! Your husband is the weird one 😆

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 04/09/2026 12:28

Totally normal thing to do. Not weird at all!

Sounds like an absolute dream, actually. I now immediately want to do exactly that myself, and I'm not even usually much of a beach person!

YourWinter · 04/09/2026 12:30

I’m 70 and single, an inexperienced traveller but I’d love to build up to doing just what you’re suggesting!

Hedgehoggin · 04/09/2026 12:32

Not weird in the slightest! Book it and have a wonderful time. I’m feeling a bit envious - all that time to read books and eat good food!

justfindingmyway · 04/09/2026 16:58

I will be doing the same in the coming weeks. I just don’t factor in what anyone thinks about me travelling alone now, I don’t want to miss out just because I am single 🙂 go and have a lovely, peaceful break
