Is this level of strictness normal on a private catamaran charter?

Itsgettinghotinere · 06/08/2026 08:12

We’re currently on a private catamaran charter in Croatia. For the most part, the week has been great, the Islands are beautiful and it’s been wonderful to see so many different places.

That said, I’m not sure if our experience of our skipper and hostess is usual or not…

We planned a sailing holiday as we wanted to do an activity holiday with our teens. I’ve sailed and grew up with small pleasure boats. We made this clear when we booked via the charter company and specifically listed it on our preference list. The preference list also stipulates that learning to sail is one of the possible options. We have not been allowed near the helm let alone sail! To be fair, the wind has been minimal so we’ve been under engine all week but yesterday would have been perfect but no, we are not allowed.

We are also not allowed to:

  1. wear shoes on the boat. We know this however our hostess constantly shouts “shoes, shoes, shoes” at us as soon as we walk on to the sugar scoops! Every time. Without fail.
  2. Sit on any outside seating while wet from swimming. When swimming we have to stay at the front of the cat until we dry off. I’m referring to the all weather outside seating. It’s making it very difficult as we’re not allowed to get any water while we swim as were might drip on the teak.
  3. We are not allowed to drip anything anywhere: my husband was washing his hands in our cabin but the cabin door was open. While drying his hands some water dripped on the floor and our host saw and immediately came into our cabin and dried up the 3 spots.
  4. We are told to eat over our plates. Our teens are 14 and 13 so it’s not as though food is dropping everywhere. My son was told to eat his watermelon over the plate as our host didn’t want to spend her time cleaning after him. We are not allowed to leave any crumbs on the table and look out if any accidentally end up on a cushion (out door cushion).
  5. One evening my husband had a glass of red wine and it came with a warning not to spill any.
  6. They have made restaurant bookings ahead for us which is fine for the most part but one was very expensive- (€650) and we only had two drinks each. The next evening was the same so we said we’d like to move our booking to a different restaurant and was told that it would make things awkward for them, they wouldn’t honour future bookings maybe and we ended up eating there.
There are other instances like this. The obsession with everything being clean all the time. We are very clean, tidy and respectful people. We just feel like we’re intruding on their boat.

While I’ve typed this I’ve been told we can only apply sunscreen off the boat, nowhere on the boat as apparently the front is full of sunscreen! I make us all stand on the front and apply sun cream. We don’t use sprays and I’m very careful about applying it. But it’s not enough and now we can’t use sunscreen unless we’re in the harbour or on land! In fact, our packing list said sun cream would be provided as they understandably want to use creams that won’t damage the boat. We arrived to find none so I suspect they prefer guests don’t use anything.

We’re walking on eggshells and just don’t feel welcome. Is this normal behaviour? I’d like to hear from those who had chartered before. Thank you

@ItsgettinghotinereI have chartered in the BVIs and we had a no sand rule on the boat but otherwise pretty relaxed. I don’t think you were treated fairly!

We ate out a couple of times but we paid for food so I’m not spending $$$ silly money on top. We were willing to dry off in the cockpit but sat on towels on the waterproof seating but that was more our choice. It was a pretty relaxed week and hosts were easy going with our dc, who were 8 and 6. They organised a Treasure Hunt on a deserted beach and we went to Dead Man’s Chest island caves where dc found a message in a bottle. We applied sun tan cream sensibly but that’s non negotiable in my view!

Try the BVIs. Essentially this is the American market where the customer is king. I’m not sure if you could have sailed the boat but we did sail! Everywhere is in sight so no sail is over 2 hours. I think you will get a better experience there.

I don’t think any of the rules are unreasonable. The suncream they said they’d provide not being available isn’t on though.

SORRY, I MISSED UPDATES. I was so incensed by this couple's dreadful hosting, I fired too soon!

It's totally unreasonable to want to keep a boat dry!! It's also unreasonable to expect your high-paying guests to get sunburn and risk cancer, to deny them water while in the sea, and to instruct their table manners.

They sound awful, OP. I'm inclined to suggest being stroppy & awkward - the relationship can hardly get worse anyway - and leave a very honest review. I'm sorry your much-anticipated holiday is turning out more like a stay at a strict boarding school.

The BVI’s are on our radar but we wanted to dip our toe in the water (pun intended) before we go further afield. We’re booking the Ionian’s next summer so hoping for a better experience 🤞

Who did you charter through?

No update really other than I’ve emailed a detailed review to the Charter company so will wait to hear back. Interesting, they produced a guest book on the last day which only had 3 reviews from the last 12 months. We declined to write in it.

I'd hazard a guess that at teast one of those reviews will have been written by the hosts themselves.

Re Ionian - Have a look at Sail Ionian - I haven’t used them but they seem to have a lot of great reviews and loads of info on their site about their fleet (I think they own them so you won’t get the “owner is skipper” preciousness) - also lots of different options to get more or less involved in the sailing depending on your level.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 10/08/2026 09:57

@Itsgettinghotinere I’m sorry - it’s a while ago and I don’t remember. It was a company with a selection of crewed yachts and we just had one for 4 of us. Probably the cheapest! There are definitely family oriented ones and I’d ask about boat rules but we were quite happy with the reasonable ones in place.

AlannaOfTrebond · 10/08/2026 11:53

Sail Ionian as recommended by a PP are a great company, I've worked with them before and would highly recommend them. Nisos Yacht Charters are also very good, they only have monohulls and don't offer chefs, but will do skippered bareboat. Both are family run companies who have been operating in the Ionian for years and their ethos is all about making sure their clients have the best possible holiday.

For higher end, larger boats Cavo Yachting offer crewed charter. I don't have any personal experience of them, but have friends working for them who most certainly would not entertain the nonsense you have experienced on this holiday.

If you are up for trying a flotilla holiday, sailing the boat yourself, but with support from a lead crew I would recommend Sailing Holidays. Flotillas can be a great holiday for kids as they can meet up with the kids on the other boats in the evenings.

You are welcome to DM me if you would like any more info.

The rules are all based around cleanliness and tidiness. Space is at a premium and it's important everything is kept clean and hygienic.

Sounds like the cleanest, tidiest, and most hygienic option would be to not rent it out for a lot of money to guests, then?

What is the point in this input? There are plenty of people who charter these and understand the rules, which includes our family.

Itsgettinghotinere · 10/08/2026 21:15

Update: the charter company has come back. He has apologised for the experience and has gone as far as contacting other recent families for their feedback.

He has obtained feedback from the couple and said “I can completely understand now why You were unhappy with the experience. As You mentioned, it was cumulative effect of several issues.”

Blame was heavily weighted on it being a heatwave, half way through a busy season and bookings back to back until mid October. Really not our issue and certainly not an excuse for their unprofessional and quite frankly rude behaviour but they have admitted they were in the wrong completely.

I believe the point they were making was that these were unreasonable expectations rather than standard character rules. The point being, if the skipper/host/owners were going to make guests stand on one leg on top of the mast in order to dry off/apply sun cream/drink a glass of red wine, maybe they should keep their yacht for their own enjoyment.

So are they doing anything about?

Curleywoo · 10/08/2026 21:20

So what are they going to do about it.
Hands up would mean diddly squat without a partial refund.
It's not about the money, for me it would be to drive home how absolutely awful their behaviour was and how it spoiled a much needed expensive holiday.

That's all very well, but what are they going to do about it?

I'm sure you would far rather have had a wonderful holiday, but given that you didn't you should be given some compensation.

GiffGaffClapTrap · 10/08/2026 22:56

I would be going back and making it very clear I expected compensation for a spoiled holiday

Second. Definitely. The way they behaved was appalling.

Curleywoo · 11/08/2026 19:48

If the charter company don't ensure a refund I think you should give them a stinker review too.

Print your complaint, plus their response, AND despite this your weren't partially refunded after a spoiled holiday.

You would be doing others a great service.

I mean I understand if it was a heatwave in March or October where you expect it to be a bit colder, but they can't really blame it on a heatwave in the middle of summer.

mishmashmess · 15/08/2026 14:30

Also, it's their own fault for being greedy if they have booked themselves back to back through to October. A normal crew will insist on a few days between every other booking so they can deep clean the boat and have a day off to recharge.

This doesn’t help you and your spoiled holiday though.

What are they planning to do for you?

2BarbieOrNot2Barbie · 15/08/2026 19:24

I have chartered a couple of times and I would say most of these are definitely not reasonable! In the Greek islands the skipper would recommend restaurants on each island but that was it. In the Caribbean the restaurants were an optional extra. We could choose to stay and eat on the boat if we wanted. Not being able to sail has been fairly standard. If you want to sail you usually do a charter without skipper. However the sunscreen thing is mental. I’ve never had that.
