Travel insurance the covers current health conditions

Can anybody recommend an insurer who will cover current health conditions?

I need travel insurance for my summer holiday. I am 60 and have a few relatively insignificant health conditions, which I will of course declare. The trouble is that my asthma is not currently well-controlled and I am seeing the asthma nurse to try and get it under control. I’m going to a hot country, and must have cover that includes my asthma as heat is one of my triggers.

Is there an insurer who will cover me for asthma on this trip?

I always use world first. I have a few medical conditions & they ask sensible questions. Quotes seem ok but have never claimed so can’t comment on that side of things.

ChickenStuffing · 30/06/2026 17:19

I use AllClear for my medical conditions.

Pinkacer · 30/06/2026 17:22

You could try saga.
We used it recently, there is a tel no to get medical advice. Not cheap though

OhBotherSaidPoo · 30/06/2026 17:25

Staysure seem to be pretty good. I have a few medical conditions despite being quite young. Just make sure you declare everything.

StopMeIfYouHaveHeard · 30/06/2026 17:28

I use Staysure and had a very positive experience with them when having a medical emergency abroad for a pre-existing condition.

As your asthma is diagnosed it shouldn't be a problem.
You don't really need a specialist insurers unless you have multiple serious illnesses.
Just do an online comparison and remember to declare everything that you've seen a doctor for or take ongoing medicine for. Usually in the last two years but some ask for one year.

pinkpony88 · 30/06/2026 23:25

We use Staysure due to DH health conditions and had to claim this year due to an unrelated mishap with his back. The claim was really easy and paid out quickly. I think they are reasonably priced too.

JemmaM1982 · 30/06/2026 23:36

Staysure here too - my son was born with a Congenital Heart Condition which requires further surgery, he’s had surgery during the time we’ve had the insurance and premiums are still less than others on the comparison sites.

My dad is 73 with some underlying conditions and uses Asda insurance, which he has been very happy with so far.

I have health conditions and go on a comparison site each year for my annual worldwide policy quote. Then I usually end up making at least a couple of phone calls to clarify what they want (usually how far back to go with medical info). I’ve used a lot of different companies and find they put their fees up a lot each year - hence the shopping around! I haven’t had to claim. I’m expecting an expensive quote as I’ve just had a knee replacement - but maybe not! Good luck in getting your asthma stabilised.

Dh has a serious diagnosis and he uses All Clear.

ChickenStuffing · 01/07/2026 08:02

We were with Staysure but then we had to phone up and tell them we had undiagnosed symptoms and awaiting tests and they said that this meant ALL our preexisting conditions which had been declared would also not be covered until we had a diagnosis. We cancelled and went with Allclear which just said anything related to the undiagnosed condition wouldn’t be covered which is fair enough but the rest were so we were happy with that small risk.

Edited as it looks like Staysure is now the same as Allclear having googled their website for undiagnosed conditions. It was a long time ago in which case that it good.

Londonnight · 01/07/2026 08:08

Look at comparison web sites and put in existing medical conditions.

ChickenStuffing · 01/07/2026 08:14

Further to my post I have just grabbed this from Staysure

‘Other health conditions (which aren’t related to the undiagnosed symptoms) can be covered.’

In which case I would recommend Staysure or Allclear if you have medical conditions.

likelysuspect · 01/07/2026 08:15

I used Staysure, have cancelled this year as not going abroad but have countless pre exisiting conditions

What companies dont like is where you are waiting for a test result or you've been referred to see a consultant and dont have an outcome yet, unknown and undiagnosed issues.

It puts me off going to the doctors to be honest as I have a lot of health issues.

Hellinnnnn · 01/07/2026 08:17

I currently use the Post Office as they had the best quote when compared to Topdog, in the past, were also good.

MaturingCheeseball · 01/07/2026 08:24

I agree @likelysuspect - I don’t think it’s well publicised that waiting for tests can nullify the insurance. I even saw that if you are prescribed medicine but don’t even take it (which is often me once I read the side effects on the packet) it can count against you.

I have cancer and use Insurancewith which seem good

Sparrowsandbudgies · 01/07/2026 08:53

Staysure or All clear. I have multiple complex health issues as well as asthma and have used both. (Under 5 consultants and on long term PIP for indication of severity). I advise in several health groups and we always recommend these two providers and have had people claim with no issues.

OneZanyCat · 01/07/2026 09:37

InsuranceWith are good and I knew a stage 4 cancer patient who they paid £5k out for in US.

Stompythedinosaur · 01/07/2026 12:21

I've done extensive research as dp has a chronic health condition. We use Staysure, I don't think there's another insurer that compares.

I've had this done to me. DH was waiting for a routine follow up test. I would understand it if they just refused to cover for that condition but no, they went nuclear and refused to cover for all the conditions they had previously agreed. We had to cancel the holiday.
Staysure are often recommended but I find them much more expensive than other companies for the same conditions.
My best experience has been with Aviva through a Nationwide bank account. I opened this account specifically for the travel insurance. I have to pay an additional cost but the cover is good.

Having said all that the proof is really in how they treat you when you claim. Travel claims for all insurers are dealt with by a handful of claims handling companies, not the company themselves.

LaDoIceVita · 01/07/2026 12:54

DH has COPD and I have asthma plus another couple of minor conditions each. Last year we used the Post Office which was very reasonable. This year we got a lower price and higher level of cover with Insure and Go.
