Indoor cabin on cruise

I've decided to book a cruise but they only have inside cabins left. Has anyone done that?

For me, it would be unthinkable to go on a cruise in cabin with no sea view.
but those cabins are cheaper

ChipDaleRescueRangers · 23/06/2026 17:30

I have done inside cabins and its been fine. Yes a balcony is lovely (done those as well) but I sleep really well in an inside due to how dark it is.

Choice of inside or no cruise. Always choose the cruise!

beanstoastie · 23/06/2026 17:34

I've been on 3 cruises with Princess. First time we had a cabin with window. Then had minisuite for for next 2 times. Personally I would never have inside cabin. It was lovely sitting on the balcony in the morning or evening. And watching the ports when arriving and departing. I know you can go outside to sit on various areas of the ship, but I much preferred having own outside space.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 23/06/2026 17:35

I wouldn’t want to be without some natural light but lots of people don’t mind them for a cheaper cruise.
Travel Blog Jamie on you tube has done a lot of vlogs with inside cabins - search for him on you tube and have a look.

ImWearingPantaloons · 23/06/2026 17:37

Our first cruise we went for an inside cabin as it was cheaper. It was absolutely fine, we were only in it to sleep and get ready for dinner.
As it was pitch black at night we slept like logs too.

lemoncrisp · 23/06/2026 17:41

We always choose inside cabin. Love the darkness at night. During the day we enjoy all the public areas. Cameras show the view from the bridge all the time. Cheaper and we don't feel like we are missing out in any way.

Mariets · 23/06/2026 17:43

Thanks for your replies. My daughter and family had already booked so it's an indoor cabin near them or no trip.

I did it once as it was the last room on an Asian cruise I really wanted to do- it was ok and I'm v.v claustrophobic - I did have one panicky episode one nights when I had insomnia - if you're not claustrophobic go for it

That's not so bad then because you can always join them on their balcony for drinks and views!

MollyDigby1988 · 23/06/2026 17:48

Yes we had an indoor cabin, med cruise last year. Room was a family room would have fit 4 people comfortably and it was 3 of us.
I actually didnt even notice the no window/balcolny and the TV showed a view
Weve booked a carribean criuse next and we have gone for a window and im not sure itll be worth the extra cost yet 😅

Ilovemyfam · 23/06/2026 17:49

I have done all types except suites. I thought when I retired it would make sense to book an internal to have more money to have more cruises. After I tried it I wouldn’t do it again. I realized that I do enjoy being able to look out and see where we are (in window only rooms). Also found how much I enjoy a balcony - to be able to drink morning coffee in my pjs and sit in the sun in peace.

So to you OP, I would think about how much time you would spend on that balcony and how important those times have been. It is such a personal choice.

Alternatively it might be that you decide according to the itinerary. A transatlantic might lend itself to an internal given that you are likely to use a balcony less often. I would have hated an internal for our Alaska cruise.

Only you can decide how you spend your trip.

ExquisiteDressing · 23/06/2026 17:51

We've done indoor overlooking promenade decks so an interior window which was fine. Last time we went we did a balcony and teen DCs shared a completely interior one opposite, they were happy with it but it felt a bit gloomy to me, I hate waking in darkness. But I have a fear of heights and struggled to use the balcony, I could only sit right back at the doors not go near the railings. It was lovely leaving the curtains open and waking to a sea view though.

Ilovemyfam · 23/06/2026 17:54

I see you have updated to say that you are getting the inside. Two thoughts - first is that you will find out if you do actually care if you have an internal. Second thought is that if you are not past final payment something else may turn up. You might be able to do an upgrade by bidding or by keeping an eye on the website.

Sgtmajormummy · 23/06/2026 17:55

I’m claustrophobic and even with a balcony suffered from motion sickness on my first and only cruise so it would be a no-no for me.
But I see you have family with a balcony nearby.

Emma Cruises on YouTube (check if she’s done your ship or route) always gets the cheapest cabin and brings a natural light/ sunrise alarm clock.

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 23/06/2026 18:12

I’ve tried them all. Realised after having a balcony that DH never went on it as he doesn’t like heights. Inside is fine for the Caribbean as you are off the ship most days anyway, and the sun sets around 6pm. I quite like a window for early morning sail ins, having a cuppa in bed. If you are all-inclusive or have a drinks package you’ll make better use of it being in the public areas.
Also, no guarantee that your balcony will be in sun or shade, whereas on deck you have the pick of locations. And also, very few balconies have sunbeds, and only have chairs.

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 23/06/2026 18:15

I have done a couple of cruises this year for work. I spent very little time in the cabin, really just to sleep in and have a shower in the morning. The rest of the time there were much nicer places to sit both inside and outside than in the cabin.

Chewbecca · 23/06/2026 18:16

Yes, I have.
It's my last choice but I would do it again if that was all that was available, and rejoice in the bargain.

Depending which line it is, there may be a 'Bid Up' option which is usually worth a go?

Jamesblonde2 · 23/06/2026 18:16

Sounds hideous!

OneLimePombear · 23/06/2026 18:22

I’ve been on 34 cruises and did it once as I had a voucher to use and wanted to book a cheap trip without adding loads of money to the voucher. My DC had an adjoining one.
It’s not horrendous, you’ll sleep well as it’s very dark.
The downside is the cabin didn’t really feel like somewhere nice to hang out. However there really is so much going on the ship that this isn’t a big deal.

Best I have ever slept perfect blackout situation

JumpingRabbit · 23/06/2026 21:18

If you have family with a balcony and you will just use it for sleeping absolutely do it over not cruising at all.
Last time we went we tried to book a balcony for us and inside for the kids but didn’t have any on the same level left.

Snicksnacksnora · 23/06/2026 21:26

We have, with 2 children it was really nice! We loved it actually I would go on the trip x

nannyl · 23/06/2026 21:54

Ive done about 14 cruises.

I think at least 9 of them have been inside

also done balcony / extra large balcone and suite with butler so can compare the cheapeast cabin on a ship with the best!

Yes an inside cabin is fine. You will essentially sleep and get changed in it and then spend most of the rest of the time enjoying the ship.
All the ones I have done have a channel on the TV which is the live view from the bow, so if you put that channel on you can see what it looks like outside "now"

yes having a balacony or a big cabin is really lovely and has its advantages, but I'd rather go on 2 cruises in an inside cabin, than one on a balcony OR 1 cruise in an inside cabin, rather than not going at all.

tanstaafl · 24/06/2026 08:25

As someone interested in cruising but (currently) can’t afford to, if you’ve paid extra for the cabin with balcony, isn’t there a possibility that one side is a smoker and the other a vaper and all that extra cost is wasted?

( not judging the people either side just the smell )

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 24/06/2026 08:58

Smoking/vaping is not permitted on balconies, only in designated areas on the public deck, which can be avoided. Having said that, there may be cabins in the vicinity which get the smoke/smell so always check the cabin reviews.
