Heatwave - dreading holiday in Paris next week

HotGrapefruit · 18/06/2026 10:35

DH and I are booked to go to Paris next week. The average highs in June are around 23 degrees, which is about the max I can handle. But the forecast is up to 40 every day. This wasn't what we were expecting at all.

I'm dreading it. The metro doesn't have aircon and neither do any of the places I've booked to eat (I've now cancelled them all). We had an assortment of walking routes planned, but none are going to be realistic.

We've spent a fortune on a lovely hotel room and Eurostar travel, so I can't bear to cancel the whole thing.

Does anyone have advice or reassurance or am I just going to absolutely hate it?!

Luxembourg Gardens are lovely - plenty of shade and ideal for a picnic.

Le Bon Marche (very nice department store) is nearby and the food hall there is fabulous. You could happily pick up a delicious picnic. It is a great location. You can venture out one side of the gardens and see St Sulpice with a very short walk, and out the other to see the Pantheon. Lots of nice patisseries nearby, including Michalak, Pierre Herme and Laduree. I'd load a basket and find a couple of chairs under a tree and settle in.

Right next to LBM is Notre-Dame of the Medaille Miraculeuse (might not be exact name). Basically a beautiful church where people go to pray for miracles. It’s well worth a visit.

There are some lovely swimming pools in Paris. When it was hot I went to one. It was a lovely experience.

Yes - Wednesday at 3pm, currently forecast to be 43 degrees at GdN

Ouch!

That one was on my list! :)

Do you mean on the way home? As when we arrived we literally just got off the train and left the station. Compared to flying I was amazed!

Unfortunately, Eurostar check in at Gare du Nord can be a total shit show and often involves some unreasonably long queues.

Not always though.

Hmmm. That's....problematic, and as I'm sure you know Eurostar check in is on the first floor, and heat rises....

But even if you can't change your hotel, it might well be possible to change your Eurostar to an earlier or later train?

It'll be the fifth day of c. 40 degree temps, so I think it's going to be a hellscape in GdN for the whole week, and the nights aren't cooling anything down either.

I've even got as far as looking at flights from CdG but I can't throw more money at this, it's too depressing!

I’d imagine they’ll take measures so people aren’t hanging around too much or theréll be no end of fainting. I can’t remember if the ES waiting room has aircon or not. I can see why yoûre not feeling up to the trip tbf. Deffo don’t go to cdg it will be just as bad.

theleafandnotthetree · 19/06/2026 21:11

OP, the more you post the more I think you should cancel. It has now become something you are dreading - what is the point in spending even more money on THAT. Chalk it up to experience, make every effort to claw back as much as possible and regard the money already spent as the price you paid for learning this lesson - no travel in mainland Europe May - October. Yes it is massively disappointing but it is only money.

I thought CdG might have more aircon? The only aircon lounge at GdN is the Eurostar Premier lounge (none of those tickets left!)

I AM dreading it: I can't see how the return travel will be anything other than ghastly/health endangering at this point. GdN after four days of 40 degrees - what WILL they do?

Yes it does if if remember rightly but I hate it personally. It’s really big and very busy at this time of year and the rer up to it will be hot too. Maybe it will be better I dunno. I wouldn’t do it personally . I try and fly from orly when I can. The air conditioned very reliable line 14 goes there and its much smaller.

Or even cancelled tbh . Sorry don’t want to be negative. The Eurostar is lovely when you’re on it though. Maybe cdg is a good idea ,please do check the rer b before if you do book it though because sometimes they are doing works and they take you so far then it’s a bus. Unlikely on a Wednesday, it’s usually evenings or weekends but I’ve been caught out in rhe past so now always check before I book. Look at RATP or Transilien.

After following this thread OP, I am actually going to change my tune and say why not cancel? You genuinely seem really anxious and essentially you are making yourself the slave to your own master.

It will cost the same whether you make all the effort of going and feeling hot, or whether you think stuff it and sit at home with a book in the cool.

Yes, like you, I am changing my advice after reading all op's posts.

It will be hot, so if she really feels hot will unequivocally ruin it, she is better not to put herself through it.

Oriunda · 19/06/2026 21:56

I cannot see the logic in advising OP to get a cab all the way to CDG (or a lengthy journey on the not very nice RER B), endure the queues at what is a large and busy airport, just to avoid a shorter wait at GDN.

Neither can I.

Me too. Have a nice few days at home instead OP?

I just wouldn't go, genuinely

Who advised that?

durdledoris · 19/06/2026 22:08

I was in Paris over half term and it was scorching, but there were loads of guys selling cold water. I recommend the open top bus to save walking. Keep stopping at restaurants/cafes for drinks and stay hydrated. They actually closed the Eiffel Tower while we were there.

OMFG. I keep hoping that the forecast will improve but it just looks like it's bedding in.

I'm feeling very unsure but we will lose so much money if we can cancel!

Nightmare. But personally I would pay money NOT to be in a city at 40C.

HotGrapefruit · 19/06/2026 22:16

I've tried to change my Eurostar ticket for an earlier or later train but the cost is an additional £500 for a standard fare!

I'll just have to hope that GdN have some sort of plan in place.

Good point, the hotel money is already spent and you will save a fair amount spending money by not going. You will be able to use the eurostar ticket another time. tThese things happen sometimes.

I’d stay at home op . It’s boiling here tonight and we’re not in the worst of it yet.
