HELP! Flying out tomorrow ,passport expires in July 2026

Hi all,

Bit of a panic here and hoping someone has been through something similar.
Just realised my 6 year old’s British passport expires July 2026 and we’re flying to Albania tomorrow from London, coming back on 13 June 2026.

I’ve read that Albania needs 3 months validity left after you leave and now I’m worried we might not be allowed to travel.

Has anyone actually been in this situation? Did you get stopped at check in or were you still allowed to go?
I’m just trying to work out how strict this really is in real life,a part of me hopes miraculously they will let us through.
Any experiences would really help !

It sounds as if you have at least a week at home before you can travel. While you're getting the passport sorted out, is there any possibility of cancelling the first week oif the accommodation? I expect not, but you probably need to let them know what's going on, just in case they think you're a no-show and reallocate it.

Then please forgive yourself for this. It's so easily done!

If you can be happy and care-free this week, your children will barely notice the altered plans. To them it'll be a bonus week of daytrips and fun with you!

you can see if you can get is expedited https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently you would have to act immediately though and may need to postpone your flight

Get a passport urgently

Renew or replace a passport urgently with the 1 day Premium service or the 1 week Fast Track service.

You also need to let the airline know you won't fly out, so they don't cancel the inbound.

I don’t think you’ll fully relax whilst you’re away, if you do get there, as you’ll be worried about the return journey. If they turn you away today, send her passport and application today and you’ll receive the new one within the week. Book the flight when it arrives (you’ll pay through the nose but might be able to get a cheaper flight to somewhere nearby and travel on). You might still be able to salvage 10 days of the trip if the stars align and you get moving re; passport application and looking for flights.

My daughter’s friend’s dad got denied by Ryanair last year, but EasyJet let him travel on the exact same passport later that afternoon! So you might get lucky!

I’ve always wondered how people don’t realise their passports are running out too. I knew mine was due to expire soon and needed renewing before our August trip, but the other day I randomly checked the kids’ passports and realised my son’s expires in the exact same month as mine! It genuinely hadn’t even crossed my mind that his would need doing too. So lucky I checked, especially as we’ve got another 3 holidays booked this year! So now I can see how easy it can be done!.

How many of you are going on the trip?

Everyone makes mistakes but FFS the passports are the most vital part of travelling? If you forget your sunscreen or shades you can buy them on a holiday at a small cost, but issues with your passport can literally cost thousands.

I bet OP has spent plenty of hundreds of hours in advance detailing all the lovely places they will be visiting, online shopping nice outfits to wear, places to eat, but hasn't set aside 5 minutes to check all passports are ok.

It's a shame but can't say I have much sympathy. Fingers crossed OP is allowed to fly but I'd be fully prepared to be declined.

It's ok to not have much sympathy, that's a you thing.
But writing it down for everyone to see makes you look like a dick.

OP, I hope you can salvage part of the holiday with an emergency passport. I've just checked all our passports on the strength of this post (we're ok thankfully) but you might be doing someone else a service by writing about this.

Two weeks for whit half term at primary in some parts of the country. Including near me.

Ah well, your 6 year old will just have to go to school instead for the two weeks of school you were planning on missing before and after half term.

You have time to sort a new passport to salvage some of your trip, but you will have to leave in half term like everyone else (there is no 24 hour service for children's passport).

Wow, that’s nasty.

DomPom47 · Yesterday 11:12

I don’t think you will have an issue getting out. When in Albania if you get to the British Embassy you can get a temporary travel document. I have had this with friends and family who have gone on holiday to Mediterranean countries without realising either for themselves or their families about passports and dates. British Embassy abroad were very helpful and understanding.

Babybirdmum · Yesterday 11:15

Can you go to the passport office today and see if you can get a new passport for her? Take her out of school

IDontLikePinaColadas · Yesterday 11:15

Hi OP - what an absolute nightmare.

Someone else might have said this further up the track, and you may know this already, but most airlines will cancel your return flight if you don't catch the outbound flight so do double check this before you just re-book any outbound flight.

Doctordoolittle · Yesterday 11:17

Could your family go on without you and then sort an emergency passport asap and travel over later with your DD?

Sparkletastic · Yesterday 11:17

We had this happen and I had to leave a teen behind. She’s wrung a lot of guilt money and treats out of me ever since. I’m so sorry OP. We were only going for a week but as your holiday is longer I hope you might salvage some of it. Also consider whether none of you going is really the right decision, however guilty you naturally feel.

plover26 · Yesterday 11:18

Haven’t RTFT, only OP’s posts.

Could you send other members of the family and DD and one of the adults travels after on a new flight? If it’s a long trip might be worth it anyway.

Sparkletastic · Yesterday 11:19

And we got stopped in a security queue pre check in as it was not long after the rules came into effect.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · Yesterday 11:19

If there’s another adult in the house. It’s on them to take some responsibility for this too.

Don’t let anyone blame you.

My mum got an emergency passport in 6 hours two weeks ago. Can you get to passport office?

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · Yesterday 11:21

Yes I would let some people in the group go, then I would be trying to get emergency same day appointment and follow them later on.

Yes I have done this too. Don’t get why OP is saying it’s not an option and would rather lose £3k…

Children’s passports are not eligible for this service. It will take a week

Not for a child’s passport.

Hadalifeonce · Yesterday 11:25

A slight variation, I arrived at Stansted for my flight knowing I had about 6 months left on my passport. Went to baggage drop, and was told I couldn't travel, as my passport was 10 years and 2 weeks old. So they are very very strict.

That still leaves 2 weeks of the holiday?

Wow, didn’t know that. Still with a week the would catch some of the holiday - not ideal but better than losing £3k

I don't think she can afford new flights and the airline doesn't have to help as its not their fault
