HELP! Flying out tomorrow ,passport expires in July 2026

Hi all,

Bit of a panic here and hoping someone has been through something similar.
Just realised my 6 year old’s British passport expires July 2026 and we’re flying to Albania tomorrow from London, coming back on 13 June 2026.

I’ve read that Albania needs 3 months validity left after you leave and now I’m worried we might not be allowed to travel.

Has anyone actually been in this situation? Did you get stopped at check in or were you still allowed to go?
I’m just trying to work out how strict this really is in real life,a part of me hopes miraculously they will let us through.
Any experiences would really help !

OP posts:

Lord save me from ever being someone who says on this kind of thread "Did you not check them before you booked?"

Best of luck with it all OP.

Everyone makes mistakes but FFS the passports are the most vital part of travelling? If you forget your sunscreen or shades you can buy them on a holiday at a small cost, but issues with your passport can literally cost thousands.

I bet OP has spent plenty of hundreds of hours in advance detailing all the lovely places they will be visiting, online shopping nice outfits to wear, places to eat, but hasn't set aside 5 minutes to check all passports are ok.

It's a shame but can't say I have much sympathy. Fingers crossed OP is allowed to fly but I'd be fully prepared to be declined.

Why not be unsympathetic in your own head and save the nasty comments? It's an easy mistake to make (not for you, I get it).

We are all human and all humans make mistakes sometimes.

BrickSnail · Yesterday 10:14

I'm sorry some posters are giving you a hard time. These things are easily done, I hope it works out for you.

StephensLass1977 · Yesterday 10:15

Op, I book a lot of travel for work. You wouldn't believe the amount of people who make this mistake. I made it myself once, and I consider myself uber-organised. We all slip up. Hope you get it resolved.

Per my Google search Albania doesn’t have different rules for children .
I saw a few videos on social media about people that were allowed to fly even though technically they shouldn’t have been allowed to . Should I accept that we are not travelling or try anyway and see how it goes tomorrow ?
So much preparation and effort has gone into this trip ,feeling gutted right now !

Never ever go by social media. Always look at official guidelines.

Whyherewego · Yesterday 10:17

I had this situation a few years back. All the official advice will be "dont travel as you will be denied".
I did a lot of research and assuming the airline staff let you board, ultimately it's down to the discretion of the border guard. They have the authority to let you enter. In my case I put the passport at the bottom of the pile, they had stamped the others (it was not a European country) and didn't even look at DSs.
But there's a risk. I figured I'd have lost the flights and hotel costs anyway so decided to chance it.
The main issue you will have is the new European entry systems I think which may automatically flag up non compliant passports.

That’s another option ,to save the outbound flight and travel once we have a passport for her .
I am not sure if we can though ,on the phone with the airline at the moment .
Our tickets have no cover of any sort of,we don’t pay the extra to have the flights at least transferred or protected in case of something happening.

I haven't RTFT so excuse me if this has bee covered. If you try and get a fasttrack passport and are flexible, phone the passport office who will be able to look at all the offices and find the earliest appointment. I did this, and ended up flying to Belfast to get my passport done the next day.

VividDeer · Yesterday 10:21

I would try and the airport. If denied boarding, travel to get quickest passport possible. Not sure if kids can be done same day...
Then fly out. Its a 3 week holiday, dont give up on it for a few days

WorryWife · Yesterday 10:24

I would also try. I once managed to travel with a huge suitcase as a hand luggage and no one bat an eye on me so please just go and see if it works out. On the way back you won’t have any issues, they will let you back in the UK.

Hoping you get it resolved!!!

Who gets two weeks at this time of year? Genuine q, because I thought no one did because of the exam timetable. I’d much rather two weeks now that pissing wet dark October. Please tell me and I’m moving there!!

But the exam timetable only applies to secondary schools!

I have friends who had 2 weeks in May as primary school parents or teachers, both in NW area (Stockport/Warrington). They always went away in the second week, as it was much cheaper than the half term week.

I would imagine some private primary schools might have 2 weeks too.

Butterme · Yesterday 10:28

I’m so sorry to hear that OP!!

I really hope you can still all fly!

I don’t know much about travelling abroad but I would either absolutely try and get on it or see if you can delay for a couple of days to get an emergency one.

Hopefully someone can tell you over the phone if you can.
Please keep us updated 🤞🤞

I haven’t read the responses but I hope you haven’t had twattish ones.

Not everyone knows about the 3 months thing and I will never understand why a passport has an expiry date that doesn’t match the date it expires.
It is not common knowledge at all and the only reason I know about it was because a amber had the same issue a few months ago,

This is nowhere near the same thing, most countries have automatic gates now which will immediately flag a non compliant passport.

There is no 'sneaking' through. Immigration laws are not flexible.

CurlsLDN · Yesterday 10:35

something I just remembered from when this happened to me -

as I had booked a package holiday easyJet offered to book us onto a ‘rescue flight’ (their words) to get us to our destination once my passport was sorted, at no extra cost.

we decided not to do it as ours was only a 5 night trip, but this might be a possibility for you if it’s a package

Albania is not affected b6 the new system though as it is in neither the EU nor Schengen,

Wrong. I work at a private school and they have three weeks off. Never jump the gun without the facts because it makes you look a bit silly.

I’ve literally never heard of a private school having 3 weeks off for May half term. Is this true?

It is common knowledge and was well publicised at the time. You say you don’t travel much so it’s probably why you didn’t know.
The OP got in to a muddle because she thought children’s passports lasted for 10 years, when it’s 5 (and always has been). It takes a week to get an urgent child’s passport too.

Of course they could deny your entry back. Thats the point of passports….
sorry edited to be clear - why would they let you fly OUT of Albania

Edited

Because they don´t want the problem, let Britain deal with it. I wouldn´t want to do extra time filling in paperwork, the kid´s a British national and they would be travelling to Britain. Couldn´t get him on the plane fast enough.
But it´s a moot point. OP could contact the Albanian consulate and see if they would issue a travel waiver, but otherwise, it´s not too promising.

Hope that’s made you feel better? Particularly the thought of the thousands being wasted! I don’t suppose OP is concerned how much sympathy you’ve got? I hope the people travelling with OP don’t take the same view as you.

Sun is shining today, enjoy the rest of your day, knowing that a fellow human made a mistake.

@Potterxoxo I hope if you go to the airport that you get through and all is ok. Coming back, you’re flying home, it will be be fine. Or if not, you’re able to get sorted quickly and enjoy at least part of the holiday. We all make mistakes, none of us are perfect.

Yes this is true and has been for the last 15 years I have worked there.

TinyCottageGirl · Yesterday 10:42

Try and book for an emergency passport ASAP, are you travelling with another adult who can take your other child. Then you can get the passport and join your family on a seperate flight a few days later? I think that is your best bet to be honest as I doubt they will let your child fly with 2 months on their passport.

That’s interesting - why? Is it in the UK? Do they not have Easter holidays?

Oh OP, try to not beat yourself up! We all make mistakes and I get how horrible it feels, having planned and spent so much.
When this sort of thing happens to me, I find comfort in the thought of "wasn't meant to happen", maybe for a good reason that I'm not aware of (yet). The Universe/God may be sending me something better or helping me dodge a bullet!
If you dont get let through at the airport, do your best to relax and enjoy a fun staycation.

GingerBeverage · Yesterday 10:52

I don't know if you're travelling with a partner, but I think a lot of the mental load falls to mothers and inevitably, sometimes stuff falls through.

Priceyyy · Yesterday 10:52

chocolateaddictions · Yesterday 10:44

Yes this is UK. They get longer because they have one week in October whereas the other schools in the area have two. The children do full days Saturday and Sunday they do church, aswell as the fact they have longer school days. We also have a lot of children from other countries like America and Japan that board.

SpinandSing · Yesterday 10:54

Wishing you the best of luck - I hope they let you through..there is a slim chance.
