Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Prague?

We can't decide between Copenhagan, Amsterdam or Prague.

If you've been to any of them, sell it to me, ie what where your highlights. Also, is there a particular area that's good to stay - we like easy access to a choice of restaurants, a few sights within walking distance.

I've been to all 3, C & P once each, Amsterdam 4 times - says it all really.
There's just so much to do, what are your interests ?

reluctantbrit · 17/05/2026 11:34

I haven’t been to Copenhagen but Amsterdam is quite expensive compared to Prague.

i love Amsterdam and it easy to travel to other areas for a day as well . Everyone speaks English and it has a huge variety of things to do.

Do you plan to go with children and what age are they?

BestIsWest · 17/05/2026 11:39

Loved Amsterdam and going back soon. It depends what you like but lots of art and history. We stay near Leidseplein/Vondelpark. Walkable to the museums, lots of places to eat though some are a bit touristy. The whole city is walkable really but the tram system is brilliant and easy to use anyway.

Highlights for me, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandt’s house and Straat.

What time of year and is it adults or with DC?

Liked Copenhagen a lot but it was freezing cold in May and eating out was very expensive.

Liked Amsterdam a lot too and found eating out much cheaper.

Never been to Prague and would love to visit.

wonderstuff · 17/05/2026 11:43

We’ve done Amsterdam and the museums there will be above what you would find in the other cities. Our next city break is going to be Prague and getting more for our money is the main attraction, it’ll be cheaper eating out there than Amsterdam or Copenhagen. Copenhagen is particularly expensive I think.

fundamentallyauthentic · 17/05/2026 11:49

Of those three, I’ve been to Prague, which is fabulous and on a par with Rome in terms of sights and atmosphere. The city centre is walkable and the people in general really friendly. Public transport is also great.

It’s also a relatively cheap place to visit / experience.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 17/05/2026 11:54

I’ve been to all 3 a few times. I’m no help as I’d return to all 3 again. Different things I’d like in different places. In Copenhagen you can get the ferry or drive to Sweden for the day and visit Roskilde in a day where they have the Viking long boats remains and graves of the kings and queens in a churchyard.

BestIsWest · 17/05/2026 11:55

If you do decide on Amsterdam and want to do the Van Gogh Museum or Anne Frank house you will have to book well ahead BTW.

We did a mixture of eating out and then went to a supermarket to get picnic food in Copenhagen. Were there for a week.

I must have been to a different Prague to pp! I really enjoyed it but Rome is in a totally different league imo. Copenhagen is nice too but I think Amsterdam as an all round destination gets my vote

Copenhagen. It’s a stunning city!

Ihatemondays1962 · 17/05/2026 13:03

I have been to all three and my favourite is copenhagen, followed by prague and then amsterdam.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/05/2026 13:06

Really depends what you like doing - we lived in Copenhagen so I’m biased and I’ve been to Amsterdam and The Hague 11 times too. Not over fond of Prague, quite cheap , not unattractive but I found quite boring - Copenhagen is expensive for a visitor if you want to lots of eating out/drinking out etc - Amsterdam is more affordable.

corndawg · 17/05/2026 13:38

Prague would have been my top choice 30 years ago when I went - but that was a long time ago now - I found it much more interesting to me than the other two though. Copenhagen I found quite dull, probably a good place to live but there are far more interesting places to visit in Europe - there and Bruges, boring! I didn't love Amsterdam, there was a weird vibe, surprisingly unfriendly. Not Paris unfriendly, but still.

For me personally I'd go to Budapest, Porto or Dubrovnik.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 17/05/2026 13:40

We love Prague, we’ve been 5 times and feel like we never run out of things to see.
My recommendation for accommodation is Mooo apartments in the city, and buy a 9 towers ticket!

ponygirlcurtis · 17/05/2026 14:08

Following this discussion because I am hoping to book a short city break for me and my 2 DSs (20 & 14) this summer. What is good to do with teens in these cities? Would love a mix of sightseeing and relaxing. Bit overwhelmed with choices of where to stay.

Overtheatlantic · 17/05/2026 14:17

We love Amsterdam and have visited multiple times. We always stay in the Leidesplein area and have poffertjes for breakfast. Museums are nearby, as are canals for boating. July/August is a great time to go.

TangfasticAddict · 17/05/2026 15:43

Been to all three and really enjoyed them all, for different reasons:

Prague - lovely surroundings, relatively cheap, great to mooch around.
Amsterdam - same as Prague on the ‘surroundings’, but more to see and do depending on your interests.
Copenhagen - less visually spectacular, and more industrial. Most expensive place I’ve ever been. Tivoli gardens is a brilliant day out.

If I had to choose one to go back to, I’d say Amsterdam 😊

BananaPeels · 17/05/2026 16:00

I’ve been to them all. It really does come down to what you are interested in and what sort of holiday you like. Prague was the least ‘pretty’ of them all. It was very nice but we definitely didn’t feel a pull to go back. Amsterdam is a quickest to get to and the nicest city for tourists if you just want to amble. Breweries in Amsterdam and Copenhagen equally as good. Both easy to get about. Ultimately whichever one you like you will have a nice break.

KoalaSquid · 17/05/2026 17:16

We just got back from Copenhagen and it was brutally expensive but I liked it much more than Amsterdam. There’s so much to do, both Copenhagen specific tourist things (Tivoli, boat trips, Amalianborg) and general museums, restaurants, shopping etc.

We went last week and it was great weather (no coats, we needed sun cream), so it sounds like it can be variable if someone else described it as “freezing cold”.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/05/2026 18:21

@KoalaSquid ah glad you enjoyed it - I think you were the lady I was giving tips too !! My own feeling is having lived there it kind of has the Amsterdam looks/feel but less edgy if the edgier aspects of Amsterdam bother anyone. It is pricey though - although living there the things tourists don’t see were uk money -rent, food shop, utilities etc

Prague was the least pretty? Goodness... it's stunning!

Bits of it were but the rest we found quite soviet once out of the main areas. We found there weren’t that many bars to just go in and chill in like there are in Amsterdam. It is relative I’m talking here. We enjoyed all 3 cities when we went. I have visited I’d say 90% of European capitals and they all have their good and bad bits like any city. Kind of depends on whether you like to visit cultural things, bars, coffee shops, examine architecture, etc.

Miranda65 · 17/05/2026 19:00

Been to all 3, but if you like art then Amsterdam is the standout. The Rijksmuseum is one of my all-time favourite places in the world.
For modern history, I'd say Prague - the various Jewish museum sites are very moving.
Copenhagen is probably more about design, food, shopping.....
But time of year will make a difference too.
