E-Sims ?

LuluWearsATutu · 15/05/2026 21:34

My current mobile provider doesn’t have roaming for where we need it to roam when we are abroad later this year. Could use resort wifi however not helpful if out and about and need to make a call etc.

Keep seeing e-sim adverts. Are they worthwhile? Or is there an alternative?

Thank you.

I travel to Japan a fair bit and always use an eSIM for there. It’s miles cheaper than roaming with any UK provider. I use Saily. It cost me less than £10 with a discount code for data for two weeks travelling around Japan last month. I bought 5Gb and then topped up an extra 1Gb.

If you’ll be mostly on resort WiFi you’ll probably use less data than I did.

Harriet36 · 15/05/2026 22:11

I go to Vietnam and always buy an eSIM for use over there. I use Airolo.
Where are you going?

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/05/2026 22:13

I've used Maya a few times and found them to be reliable. The one time I struggled to connect they were really helpful..

WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo · 15/05/2026 22:23

My daughter went to a non-eu country recently and I was nervous about her being out of contact. We used Holafly. No issues. £6 a day I think.

BotterMon · 15/05/2026 22:28

I use Airolo eSIM worldwide. It's excellent and you get great discounts for your next trip or if you share your discount code to others in your party.

Takoneko · 15/05/2026 22:37

@WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo £6 per day sounds really expensive. What country was it?

My eSIM data for my last non-EU trip cost me about 70p per day.

WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo · 15/05/2026 22:39

I thought that after reading your post 🤣 it was Andorra.

WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo · 15/05/2026 22:40

@Takoneko

Takoneko · 15/05/2026 22:44

@WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo maybe Andorra is expensive. I know prices can vary by country.

WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo · 15/05/2026 22:50

I’ve never used one before so could have been completely ripped off.

I’ve just checked and I paid €25 for 7 days. Japan is £3 ish a day for comparison with slight variation depending on how many days you buy. It’s 1gb a day. @Takoneko

MiddleAgedDread · 15/05/2026 22:51

I’ve used BNE eSIM a couple of times and it was wasaaay cheaper than my contract provider charged for overseas use.

PrimaniTu · 15/05/2026 22:52

I used Airolo when I went to Abu Dhabi. It was pretty cheap and simple to use. Would definitely use again.

GentlemenPreferBonds · 15/05/2026 22:55

I’ve used Maya mobile a number of times. Only once I had a problem (my error!) and they sorted it all out asap. £6 is very expensive compared to Maya - I paid £4.99 for 5 days in Greece (5Gb)

Bjorkdidit · 16/05/2026 05:50

Whatever you use, make sure you follow the instructions carefully and be aware you will need to be connected to WiFi to activate it when you're abroad.

Perhaps do it at the airport if you're going to need your phone for directions etc straight away.

Also be aware that the instructions from the eSIM provider don't always match how your phone wants to set it up, mine didn't so it didn't set up properly until I realised I needed to do something different to what the eSIM provider was telling me.

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 16/05/2026 05:54

We go to the US every year and use an eSIM. We’ve used buzzesim yessim and holafly with no issues

PartyQuestion30th · 16/05/2026 05:58

I’ve used holafly and airolo, both fine and very cheap.

MargoChanellingBarbara · 16/05/2026 06:53

I’ve used Airalo a lot. No issues. Message me if you would like a code for £2.50 off (I will receive the same).

TeamGeriatric · 16/05/2026 07:06

We've used Saily for esim a few times, it works seamlessly. Price varies by country. In recent times we've used it in Switzerland, Japan, Australia and Jamaica. Jamaica was the most expensive place to use it. We travel as a family and usually just one of us gets an esim and we hotspot off that person, but obviously we try to avoid people doom scrolling all day (unless you get a large data allowance), they can do that on hotel WiFi, the esim is mostly used for navigation, calling Uber etc.

That doesn’t sound too bad, but it’s probably more data than most people need. With saily you don’t buy data per day. You buy a 30 day eSIM with X amount of data and then if you run out you can just add another one. I used 6gb in 14 days. Last year I bought a 10gb eSIM and only used 5Gb of it in two weeks.

That isn’t the case with the one I use. It activates automatically when I land and it connects to the local network. You do the set up before you leave in the app. When I get on the plane I set my mobile data to the second SIM and as soon as I land the eSIM activates automatically.

Used Airalo when visiting family in SE Asia they showed me how to do it. Absolutely brilliant. Paid a fixed fee I think £10 or something than had all the data I needed.

LuluWearsATutu · 16/05/2026 08:09

Its Turkey.

OP- the country doesn’t much matter. The best thing to do is to download one of the eSIM apps like Saily or Airalo and then just buy a chunk of data with that. I’ve used a couple of providers and they are much the same. I stick with Saily now mostly because they sponsor tonnes of travel youtubers and so there is always a discount code that I can use for extra money off. A bonus with them is that also have a built in adblocker that helps to save data and avoid annoying ads and a virtual location feature.

JuliettaCaeser · 16/05/2026 08:39

My BIL is amazing at tech and he got me the Airalo app. Download that follow the instructions. His tip name the eSIM the country you are in in your settings so it’s clear and easy for you to go back to your original sim on your return.
