Any tips for a solo short break in Lake Garda?

Hi
Spontaneously booked a solo holiday to Lake Garda in a couple of weeks. Desenzano.
B&B 4 days. Planning own route from airport (Verona). Train and taxi probably.
I'm a confident traveller and have done a couple of solo hols before, but they have been package type, beach short breaks,to very familiar resorts.
I have been to Italy a few times but always with DP and DC.
Any tips?
I'm think maybe I will be a bit lonely and haven't chosen the best place🤔
I don't speak the language ( do I need to be able to?!).

A bus from Verona to Lake Garda is really cheap. You won't need to speak Italian but always worth learning the basics for ordering food and drinks etc.

Heyyaheyya · 11/05/2026 10:14

Thanks
Yes I think i can do the basics like greetings etc.
Yes I can buses run but feel trains are a bit clearer re: stops!
Anyone stayed specifically in Desenzano ?

I'm so jealous! I have no advice but came on to say that I am sure you will have a wonderful time. I would love to do a solo trip abroad but just don't have the confidence yet. I'm not sure how I would cope with airport faff and everything else that goes with travel on my own. I would love to visit the Alhambra in Granada in particular.
I'm planning a three night trip to a city in the UK though during the may school holidays which I desperately need.
Keep us updated as to how it went!

Heyyaheyya · 11/05/2026 11:02

@Thisgirlcandance
Ah thanks. The airport is fine. I'm ok travelling and feel confident. It's just the nature of the trip!
I've done many city non beach trips where I do all the navigation. But always have had someone with me. And company for meals and drinks.

Equally I've done beach holidays alone which is somewhat easier, and you can just sit by the pool! Read at night on balcony with bottle of wine!
This is somewhere in between and I'm hoping I'm not lonely( I don't want to make friends though!!!)
A UK break sounds good too and that's my next thing too.
I have family and friends, but sometimes logistics mean it's just easier to go alone although I'd prefer company of DH and kids, I'm not letting it stop me!!!

Have a lovely time, we’re going later in the year and are booked in the same town. I’m hoping to visit some of the Roman sites and there’s also a wine festival when we go so sounds like sampling wine would be good at any time!

MissAmbrosia · 11/05/2026 12:15

Densenzano is lovely. Boat trip to Sirmione - walk up to the end and the Cattulus ruins - and Garda. Roman ruins are interesting. Lots of places to eat.

purplecorkheart · 11/05/2026 12:17

Stayed there years ago. It was really lovely. The local people were very warm and friendly. It is very easy to get around

Heyyaheyya · 11/05/2026 16:08

Thanks for the replies. Sounds lovely. I think I'm worried about feeling a bit 'lost' walking around on my own.
It's nice to share that with someone and like stopping for a drink etc! As I said before, beachy holiday different. I'm quite comfortable with that, just chilling by the pool. I'm.just hoping that I haven't picked the wrong kind of holiday to go solo!!

Just been there (mainly Peschiera and Sirmione rather than Desenzano). I think you will be absolutely fine re: solo. Very safe, fairly touristy, good restaurants, nice to wander around, nice to just relax, plenty to do. My main bit of advice is about the transport. LN026 is the bus that gets you from Desenzano to Sirmione, then onto Peschiera, then onto Verona or vica versa. It is hopelessly over-busy, crammed to the gills most of the time - so much so that they sailed past some stops, and even in the main stops it was full in minutes with more people desperate to get on, and having to wait for the next one (then same scenario). Might be OK if you are getting it from start point, but everyone wants to get it. Trains, on the other hand, half empty, very cheap if you get the local one (4 euro I think). The ferry was also under-used and glorious, but the timetables are a bit weird between Des-Sirm-Peschiera - I would have loved to get the ferry from Peschiera to Sirmione and then one back, but the one back left about 20 minutes after it arrived, and there wasn't another. It's OK we said. We will get the ferry there, and the bus back ! And it is doubly OK we said, because if the bus is busy, we can get an UBER. Uber from Sirmione to Pechiera (des is about the same distance but the other way) was 60eur, it is 6 miles. It WAS Labour Day, and a lot of Uber drivers do not work that day so probably why the price was so high. But out of interest, I have just done an Uber quote (admittedly weird time at night) and it is still 45e from Sirmione to Des. I have no idea why they don't run more buses on this extremely popular route, but I hope this helps you not get caught out by the bus thing. Have a lovely time, it is a nice part of the world. x

Heyyaheyya · 12/05/2026 09:45

Hi thanks for the info re:buses
Think I will skip the bus.im happier with trains anyway.

Plan is the shuttle thing from airport to train station. Then train to Desanzano. I have Trentitalia app. Then I'm thinking uber from there to hotel. I have emailed hotel to see if they could provide a transfer but they haven't responded.
Think I will definitely look at ferry to Sermione.

Is it worth going back and seeing Verona whilst I'm there, or stick with the Lakes?

We've been going to Desenzano for 20 years! Which hotel are you staying in?
As you're only there a short time I wouldn't do Verona this time. Why not do a two centre next time? You will definitely want to return 🙂
The transport advice given above is excellent and you would be better off getting the boat to Sirmione. It can get incredibly crowded there and some stuff (ice cream!) is overpriced there.
Taxis are in short supply especially in the evening and quite pricey.
Go to Cono Loco in Via Roma instead. Best ice cream in town!
You will be perfectly ok as a solo traveller and English is very widely spoken. It's nice to have the polite basics though, it's appreciated.

Places to go in Desenzano? I would recommend the Castello as the view is lovely. (if you like art there is a Di Chirico exhibition just starting) the Duomo, which is cool and calm, the promenade walk along the lake and the Roman Villa.
So many good places to eat and drink you'll have no trouble.

Oh and if you're there on a Tuesday it's market day. Biggest one on the lake.

Heyyaheyya · 13/05/2026 15:59

Thank you. Maybe I will rethink Verona
Yes planned the castle and the Roman villa.
I'm quite excited now!

I was in Desenzano last month. I think it’s a great location for a solo trip. Felt very safe, clean, friendly locals, well lit at night etc.

The promenade had just undergone a renovation & is lovely for an evening stroll. Plenty of restaurants & bars for a 4night stay.

I took the boats to Sirmione, Peschiera & Lasize. Also done a half day to Verona & a half day to Venice by train. Venice was a bit far & tiring, but I would definitely recommend Verona just because it’s a bit different than the lakeside towns.

As the boat pulls into Sirmione you will spot some thermal baths. I didn’t make it this time, but they looked really nice.

From Desenzano station it’s all downhill to the lakeside, so an easy walk if you only have an small case. There is also a taxi rank directly outside.

Miranda65 · 13/05/2026 21:48

Desenzano is great.

You'll get by with minimal Italian - just use "Grazie" a lot!
Several places on the lake you can visit by boat.
Excellent market - possibly on a Saturday?
Really handy to be close to a station, so you can have days out.
It's just a nice, small town. I'd be very happy to go there solo.

Miranda65 · 13/05/2026 21:51

Don't rely on there being any taxis waiting on a rank when you arrive at the station. But if your hotel.is on or near the lake, just walk down the hill and it won't take you long.

AlwaysCaffeine · 13/05/2026 21:54

Spent a day in Verona whilst at lake Garda last year - highly recommend.

Market day is Tuesday. They sometimes have small specific (craft, food) markets at the weekend.

ifonly4 · 14/05/2026 08:10

I think Densanzano may be a smaller resort, but you're only there four days, you can soon fill things out in the day with buses or lake steamers to other resorts on Lake Garda - in fact I recommend going to another resort or two, no matter where you're staying. I don't speak a word of Italian, but have been to Lake Garda twice and Milan once, I don't remember having a problem.

I've been away three times on my own, yes it is quieter, but at the same time great, as you can do what you want, when you want and for the length of time that totally suits you. Do you enjoy reading? If so, that's always something you can do as and when.

Heyyaheyya · 14/05/2026 09:30

Hi thanks all! I love reading. I will be taking books and I'm.happy chilling with a book and a drink.
I love walking and will happily walk miles!
I'm.planning low key. I want to keep an low profile and certainly no one trying to keep me company!!!😮

Little bit worried about this as I think distance to hotel from train is about 40min walk.Happy to walk but not on an unfamiliar route hoping google maps doesn't re route!

I think it sounds completely perfect. Stop for a drink exactly when you feel like it. Sit there half the afternoon people watching and enjoying the view while drinking Spritzes if you feel like it. Or walk miles to whatever you want to see, or take the ferry. Eat exactly what you fancy when you fancy it.

I quite often deliberately go away by myself for exactly this type of break. Glorious!

The road from the station is a straight road down to the lake and people will be happy to direct you.
if you're staying in the town centre, you would turn right at the bottom of the road from the station.

Heyyaheyya · Yesterday 14:09

Hotel palazzo del garda
It says 30 min walk. Which I'd happily do but is it an easy route?

OP posts:
Vanillalime · Yesterday 20:52

Extremely easy. Downhill all the way & then flat once you are at the lake. I stayed just along the road in Villa Rosa.
