Hot holiday in Europe that isn’t too hot

Nerdle · 16/04/2026 21:32

Looking for a ‘hot’ summer holiday that is not too hot. DCs would love an all inclusive type swimming pool and beach holiday. DH hates hot weather. Am wondering where might work that is warm enough to swim in the sea and not so hot that dh hates it. In Europe. Any suggestions where to start my search?

The Azores - although to be honest it would much more sense to go to a high street travel agent and give them your requirements and take some recommendations from them. You're not obliged to buy there and then. Take the information home, do some googling and then - if you're canny - go back with three holidays that you can buy online and see if they can do you a deal on any of them.

Sweden.

WonderingWanda · 16/04/2026 21:36

The Algarve, the further west you go the breezier it gets and makes things a little cooler.

GlomOfNit · 17/04/2026 08:42

If this is a hot holiday in the school summer holidays, and you have young kids, I'd suggest that nowhere in southern Europe is really likely not to be 'too hot' these days. Sad Or at massive risk of wildfires. I'd book somewhere lovely in Scandinavia and hope for non-English weather!

Treylime · 17/04/2026 08:48

The trouble is if it's not hot med weather there is the risk of rain in places like northern France, Norway, the Alps.
I would love for there to be a not so hot but dry place to holiday but can't think of one.

Canaries, Madeira, Azores, Algarve, north coast Spain, Brittany. There are never any guarantees with weather though OP. The year we went to Bilbao and San Sebastian it was 40 degrees in SS, which everyone said was freak weather so you take a risk anywhere. Hell, it was 40 degrees here in the south of England in the summer of 2022!

minipie · 17/04/2026 09:28

Canary islands never get that hot I believe. Although the sea also never gets that hot either!

Agree. We went to north side of Teide in Tenerife and mornings were always cloudy and breezy as was the far north of Gran Canaria (Las Palmas). If you went there, your DH could walk about and do things in the morning and then in the afternoon, your kids could go in the pool when it's warmer?

Azores and algarve both fit your bill and lovely.

Las Palmas a good shout. If kids are active and brave they can do paragliding there. Nice but scared me shitless when the metal strip we were sitting on moved in the breeze high up! 🤣

Lanzarote will have a good breeze. We went to Spain last July and it was unbearable. My mother lives there and I’ve told her we’ll only visit out of season from now on!

Gillthepill · 17/04/2026 09:40

Yes, Northern Tenerife has a sort of micro climate. It will still be warm but not hot hot like the Med. I like that area but it doesn’t have many resorts as such so there isn’t the infrastructure like in the South.

We had a great holiday to Norway, Denmark and Sweden in early July. Around 24 degrees - perfect for me. Not a package holiday though. I’ve heard good things about the Norwegian cruises - some cruise ships are very family friendly.

Or switch your main holiday to May half term or October half term? Generally good weather all over the Mediterranean in May/June and in Southern Med in October.

KnickerlessParsons · 17/04/2026 09:46

Have you considered the U.K.?
South West Wales and Devon or Cornwall would fit the bill

MajesticWhine · 17/04/2026 09:46

Portugal is a good call. Most of Europe is too hot in the summer. We went to Provence last year which wasn’t too hot but that would be dull for your kids.

Zov · 17/04/2026 09:47

I wouldn't book anything yet! The jet fuel is running out!

Lomonald · 17/04/2026 09:50

North Spain suits us, my husband hates hot hot so we go to Costa doranda.

Everybodys · 17/04/2026 09:54

What time of year would you go? This is easier (and cheaper) if you're not confined to the school summer holidays.

If you want warm not hot, May half term is a good option albeit the pools may still be a bit chilly if your DC are at the fussier end about these things. If preschool age, perhaps September.

CoolShoeshine · 17/04/2026 18:57

Assime youre looking for temps lown o mid 20s?
Somewhere in southern Poland like Zakopane is wonderful in the summer. Blue skies and hot but not sizzling hot like the Med. Not a beach holiday but still very bustling, great scenery and outdoor swimming.

If not another year rhe Canaries are lovely at Easter.

SpottyAlpaca · 17/04/2026 19:02

Brittany might work for you, it’s accessible, it has great beaches and has a similar climate to Cornwall. Of course that means it can be wet & windy in the middle of summer as well as pleasantly warm & sunny, but that’s the trade-off for avoiding the heat of the Mediterranean in midsummer.

StaringAtTheWater · 17/04/2026 19:11

The stretch of coast near Sintra stays quite cool despite the southernly location.

The best bet for not hot but a warm sea is somewhere far south (like Crete) in October half term (as the sea retains heat longer than the land)

Owlmoonstar · 17/04/2026 19:14

Madeira

Puerto de la Cruz- Tenerife North

Fuerteventura (mildest temps out of canaries)

Lanzarote (breezy)

Southern Tenerife and gran canaria will be boiling.

cloudsinmycopy · 17/04/2026 19:20

I second Northern Tenerife. We go every other year and it’s always been 23-29. It’s never gone over 30, the temperature is pretty consistent.

As opposed to mainland Spain, Italy and Greece where it’s been fucking 35-42 the last few times, absolutely unbearable.

Owlmoonstar · 17/04/2026 19:21

Bulgaria could be an option too.

It gets hot, but overall not as hot as the usual Mediterranean hot spots.

Chewbecca · 17/04/2026 19:23

The issue with your requirement is sea swimming. It's (pretty much) only warm enough to swim in the sea when it's scorchio outside.

Where do you want to compromise?!

lifehappens12 · 17/04/2026 19:32

Northern Spain but they don’t have so much on the all inclusive resorts. We were at eurocamps near salou last year in August and and compared to Italy it was really pleasant. Swim in the sea warm but not burning hot.
