Recommendations for solo UK city breaks

Yogisunflower91 · 15/04/2026 18:27

Has anyone got any recommendations for a UK city break for a weekend, solo.

I’d like to have a little getaway, somewhere to explore, but easily accessible by train. I’m not too bothered about what shops are available, but somewhere nice to eat, coffee, take a book and have a wander, maybe a facial or beauty treatment.

Thank you! 🤍

I liked Bath and York. Both easy ish to walk around, pretty to look at, cultural and nice places to have tea and cakes etc. Also loved Edinburgh.

Winchester

Or any of the above.

Accessible by train, of course, depends on where you're starting (sucks teeth, I wouldn't start from here ...)

Whistable or Folkstone - both have nice little high streets, plus nice walk along coast.

I agree, where’s your starting point?

Others have beaten me to it but I was going to suggest Bath, York or Edinburgh. To be honest you can't go wrong in most of the major UK cities though. We are very blessed with lovely cultural heritage in the UK and pretty safe cities. Don't discount London too (unless you are there already). So much to do.

I travel a lot as a solo female for work and often dip in and out of places. And I rarely don't like a place.

Depends where you’re starting from…..??

Does it have to be a city? If not:

Whitby
Robin Hood’s Bay
Staithes
Conwy

I live in Bath so would recommend that but my other favourites are Cheltenham, York, Edinburgh, Chichester, Exeter , Winchester, Cardiff and Liverpool -

Norwich. I’m biased because I live there and think it’s fab 😎

They’re rather small towns, not cities

As a “southerner” I’ve visited most of the places recommended but I finally visited Liverpool a wee while ago & honestly had the most (unexpectedly) fantastic time there. Friendly people, lovely variety of cafes & eateries & a city soaked in history.

JulietteHasAGun · 15/04/2026 20:55

Manchester….think there are direct trains from Norwich. Art galleries, museums if you like that sort of thing. Great cafe scene. I think the architecture of the northern quarter, etc is really nice. It’s easy to walk around without being too big. Nice independent shops as well as all the big names.

zantez · 15/04/2026 21:09

I like the sound of Conwy. (sorry for hijack), is there much to see/do besides the castle?
