Alicante in March

Thinking of going for a few days mid March. Weather looks mid teens. Just want a short break away. Anyone been there this time of year and if so is it worth going into Benidorm for a day just to see it? 🙈 it wouldnt be my idea of a holiday destination but thinking might be fun to pop into for an afternoon!

I’d be going further south, given it’s March.

I went the week before last , to Benidorm actually , though went to both Alicante and Villajoyosa on the tram two separate days, both lovely . We had fab weather.
As for Benidorm , I had always thought it was not my type of place, but I’ve been 5 times since the start of last year. Avoid the strip unless it’s your thing , drink, eat and hang out where the Spanish people and you will have a great time. My favourite place is called Cava Aragonesa where a glass of decent rose is less than €2.
if you go to Alicante , check out the Mercado , food market where the locals buy their produce and you can grab a coffee or snack , it’s quite a place.

Its actually Villajoyosa we are looking at staying in! What did you think of it? Thanks so much for your reply

Alicante was a surprise to me. A really lovely city with lots of great restaurants and bars and a lovely beach. Second a wonder around the mercado.

Went to Benidorm 25 years ago, I dont think I'd recommend a trip! Aguilas is cute and not too far away.

Yeah i was thinking this but my friend was in Barcelona 2 weeks ago and it was 21 degrees!

My sister lives just outside Alicante. She always says March is really cold there. But she really feels the cold. Compared to the UK it's usually much warmer, but I would check the forecast first.

I went end of Feb last year and it was great! Weather was mild, great food and town is easy to navigate.

Changedforsafety · 25/02/2026 09:08

very pretty ! We strolled down the front and to the port but not into the town . Looked busy enough maybe for a short break . We got off tram at Creueta and walked through to the beach

Was it shorts & t shirt weather? I am not too worried about swimming ir sunbathing more that we can eat outside and go for walks etc

Benidorm….I popped there for an afternoon once. Absolute toilet of a place and I never want to return. Interesting from an anthropological viewpoint 🤣

fluffythecat1 · 25/02/2026 10:13

I’m heading to Alicante in 3 weeks time for some solo winter sun and to see a relative. Can fly from a regional airport and accommodation is good value, can’t wait!

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I said to my DH we could take the kids as sort of a field trip! I know, I know, plenty of nice parts I'm sure!

It was t shirt weather in the day but with maybe a light jacket cardi as out of the sun it was a bit colder . A light coat for night maybe . They had a lot of rain before we got there apparently but it only rained lightly one night .

Lots of places to see . If you had time for a tram ride over to Altea , the beachfront there is gorgeous and the old village has been liked to Santorini. Bit of a climb but gorgeous once you are up there.

BorgQueen · 25/02/2026 13:57

We go sea swimming in March.
The Poniente / Old Town side of Benidorm is lovely . We’ve gone every Easter for the past 3 years.

50NotFat · 25/02/2026 14:34

Just got back from Alicante. Days were nice and warm but definitely a chill in the evening. You’ll need shorts and jumpers!

There has been some awful weather in Spain this winter, but it’s been pretty settled for the last week or so, around 18-20 degrees in Malaga (but feeling warmer in the sun) and I think Alicante is generally meant to be drier. It depends on whether you want to sight see and be able to sit outside for a drink without a jacket on the day time (in which case you could risk it), or whether you are looking to sunbathe (in which case, don’t).

Could I hijack this thread to ask you, is there enough at Altea to stay there, or would you just do as a trip from Alicante? I was thinking of going next February and doing one week Alicante, one week Altea. We are quite lazy so would be more pottering around, lunch out etc. Was thinking we could access Denia from there as a day trip. Thank you.

Hmmm. I’m not sure it’s a two week holiday, Altea to me is a day trip at best and Alicante I think no more than 2-3 but then that’s me I like to get out and about.

Totally agree , I think everyone sees the less nice side and think that’s it but the side you mention is gorgeous . We went the year before last for the Spanish fiesta , loved the church all dressed up and the solemn processions.

NormasArse · 25/02/2026 20:10

I love Alicante. We usually have a few days there in February or March.

The big rock is nice to climb- lovely views over the sea from it. The castle is also a nice walk.

There are lots of great restaurants too.

I was thinking as a base for travelling out - Murcia and Cartagena from Alicante, Xàbia and Denia from Altea. With a very relaxed schedule the rest of the time. Mainly escaping the British winter with a bit of sightseeing along the way. I’ll investigate a bit more - thanks.

Changedforsafety · 26/02/2026 11:01

That would work . I’m considering a Spanish tour this year .

Travelfairy · 04/03/2026 12:50

Anyone out here at the mo? Going in the 10 days, 2 weather apps are giving almost completely different forecasts 🙈
