I know this is not jet2s fault but I was terrified
:(

What is the point of the poll?

ClaudiasDreadfulEyeliner · 13/02/2026 21:36

Better get on the phone to Take a Break Magazine then, could be £50 in this story 😉 (I'm assuming from the poll that this is not a genuine post).

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 13/02/2026 21:38

Based on my survey of one, I'd say Tui's better at not being struck by lightning.

notimagain · 13/02/2026 21:40

FWIW aircraft being struck by lightning isn't great but it happens and they are designed to cope...it would be unusual for a strike to trigger further problems, but it's depends on the nature of the strike...most times the aircraft just ends up with a couple of burn spots or pinholes somewhere non-structural.

What reason was given by the flight crew for the emergency landing?

busyd4y · 13/02/2026 22:01

What has the poll got to do with a lightning strike?

blacksax · 13/02/2026 22:05

I was in a plane that got struck by lightning once. British Airways I think it was.
😂

<that's buggered up the poll, hasn't it?>

TheChosenTwo · 13/02/2026 22:06

I thought planes were regularly struck by lightning but because they are essentially a faraday cage/box they were okay?
What was the reason for the emergency landing?
Glad you’re okay, we flew through a lightning storm once and I was absolutely terrified while others were excitedly looking out the window! Baffled me, I was saying prayers and all sorts 🫣

TheChosenTwo · 13/02/2026 22:07

Oh, and sorry if it screws up your poll but my flight was with easyJet!

Yetanothernewname1 · 13/02/2026 22:09

YABU planes are designed to cope with lightning strikes. They only land as a precaution. When I was on a plane that was struck by lightning, the crew were very clear that it was not abnormal and that returning to where we started was just a precaution. The plane was checked by engineers and we were back in the air a couple of hours later.

The lightening strike literally happens in a second then back to normal flying. YABU to be terrified.

Yetanothernewname1 · 13/02/2026 22:10

Oh mine was BA btw.

PurpleLovecats · 13/02/2026 22:11

It’s a shock isn’t it? Happened to me when I was a teen flying to the states.

DiscoBeat · 13/02/2026 22:11

I don't know the lightning stats between the two airlines so not in a position to vote but it sounds scary for you

BrendaSmall · 13/02/2026 22:12

Oh damn!
My preference is EasyJet, my flight in March is £250 cheaper with easyJet than if I went with TUI!

notimagain · 13/02/2026 22:12

@TheChosenTwo

I thought planes were regularly struck by lightning but because they are essentially a faraday cage/box they were okay?

Can't put a number on it but yes it's fairly common.

And yes, the Faraday cage idea means the charge flows around the outside - as I mentioned upthread you often get two witness marks.on the airframe one where the strike arrived, the other where it leaves..

Just occasionally you'll get a strike that maybe damages the nose area or a wingtip but that's pretty rare.

Based on my survey of one, I'd say Tui's better at not being struck by lightning.

It was a Tui plane that slid off the runway at Leeds Bradford a couple of years ago and delayed the Jet2 flight I was on by hours and hours so that makes me team Jet2.

Agree 😂😂

mumofoneAloneandwell · 13/02/2026 22:18

Sorry girl, hope you’re okay. Dunno why your poll is making me laugh , sounds like it could happen to anyone tbh xx

notimagain · 13/02/2026 22:18

Here you go, article from Airbus but lightning won't discriminate - all airliners are equal....average aircraft gets a strike once a year

BusterGonad · 13/02/2026 22:20

It happened to me a few years ago. Same destination too. I found it quite excited. It's pretty much routine isn't it?

GuiltyPleasure · 13/02/2026 22:21

I didn’t realise that freak weather conditions had the ability to target specific airlines 😂, but in the spirit of the poll I’ll go with Jet2 (because TUI don’t fly from my local airport)

Fl0weryTwats · 13/02/2026 22:29

Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday Grin

QuickPeachPoet · 13/02/2026 23:00

Where were you trying to get to?

WallaceinAnderland · 13/02/2026 23:09

Well Jet2 must the safest airline now as we all know lightning never strikes twice!

Fluffyholeysocks · 13/02/2026 23:14

Do you have to pay extra to be struck by lightning on Ryanair?

Meadowfinch · 13/02/2026 23:19

Poor you. It can be a bit of a sweaty palmed moment.

We got struck coming into land at Heathrow, with about 90 seconds to go. The BA pilot dragged the plane back into the air and then we had to wait for another landing slot. It was a Friday night and very busy, we seemed to be up there for ages with the storm flashing around us. Not fun 🙁
