Berlin city break recommendations

I've got 3 days in Berlin with my adult daughter at the end of February. We've booked cheap flights and a hotel near Hackescher Market S-Bahn station. We are keen sightseers and able to walk decent distances. There are loads of ideas for 'must see' places on the internet, but you can't beat personal recommendations.
If you have been to Berlin - where would you recommend? And where would you avoid? Thank you x

We booked to go up the Reichstag Building at dusk and it was definitely a highlight. You need to book a long time in advance though.
Topography of Terror was incredibly powerful and moving. We didn’t last very long there because it’s so mind blowing.
I also found the Anne Frank Center incredibly fascinating. It’s a small museum so won’t take more than an hour or so but well worth it.

I loved Berlin. I took DS for 2 nights when he was studying German and History at GCSE. He's now at Uni, and still talks about how efficient we are at holidaying (ie, we ticked everything off in record time😂).

Highlights were the DDR Museum, seeing Nefertiti's bust in the Neues Museum, Topography of Terror, the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg Gate, where the books were burned in WW2. We did a fab walking tour, and it was just all so interesting. We also went up the Reichstag, but I didn't find it as good as others - still worth doing though.

Walking through the Tiergarten and hearing nightingales was awesome. Especially having seen photos of it right after WW2 when the citizens were starving and dug it up to grow potatoes.

I found Berlin so moving - I did a German exchange with school when I was studying German at GCSE right after the wall came down, and the family I stayed with took me to East Germany, it was incredible.

I agree with the other suggestions. I also liked the Stasi Museum, which has original tech - bugs, telephones, hidden cameras and weapons.

Get yourself in the mood by watching the film Goodbye Lenin the night before you leave!

FindMeUnderTheDuvet · 30/01/2026 16:49

Templehof Airport. I love walking so loved being able to walk in the runway, plus this was a fascinating place (the history of the rallies there was mind-blowing), and also a bit of a plane geek so for me it was great.

Agree - the Stasi museum was so very interesting. Also recommend watching “The Lives of Others”.

The Museum Insel is fab and the East Side Gallery. It’s so easy to cycle round too.

for a more local-feel market, try Boxhagener Platz on a Saturday morning. There are some lovely independent shops and eateries in the streets around it too.

Umbilicat · 31/01/2026 17:05

The DDR Museum and the Jewish Museum are both fascinating – the latter very moving. DDR is open until 9 pm. I would go either early or late in the day as it gets very crowded and it’s a smallish space.

Definitely watch the lives of others before you go

Check the weather and pack accordingly, I have to go to Berlin quite a lot for work and it is freezing there in winter

Ohcrap082024 · 31/01/2026 17:22

If it is really cold and you want some indoor ideas, the Berlin TV Tower (on the old East Berlin side) is worth a visit. Lifts up to the indoor viewing area, panoramic views. There is also a bar and a restaurant up there if you want to book.

7238SM · 31/01/2026 17:23

DH and I went about 10yrs ago. He was attending a conference during the day, and I walked/pottered about the museums in the day. I felt very safe and found it easy to get around.

Museum island is a must see IMO. Especially the Nefertiti bust in the Neues museum. The Jewish museum was fascinating and only a very small amount was about WW2. The DDR museum was also interesting, but smaller than I expected.

I work in healthcare and went to the Berlin museum of medical history of the charite. When I went, the exhibits were all in German and if you don't work in a medical field, it might not be of interest.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 31/01/2026 17:29

I second the DDR Museum.
We also rated the Haus am Checkpoint Charlie and the Spy Museum.
The Topography of Terror was very intense, takes a couple of hours to complete, but it's free and outdoors so you can leave at any point.
The Memorial to the Murdered Jews is worth a visit. Again it's outdoors and free. There's a Museum underneath but we didn't visit it.
The East Side Gallery is also free and outdoors - part of the Berlin Wall, now a canvas.

RavenPie · 31/01/2026 17:36

I loved the Ishtar gate which is somewhere in museum island but I’ve forgotten where. Iirc we had a pass for all the museums on the island. I loved the spy museum too - lots for kids but I enjoyed it as a grown up.

TorroFerney · 31/01/2026 17:37

What others have said - Brandenburg gate. DDR Museum, Spy Museum, the wall (East side). We had a tour of the Reichstag which was really interesting - British link with Sir Norman who had done a good job.

EnterQueene · 31/01/2026 17:40

Thank you so much for so many helpful suggestions- I am really looking forward to it. I know it will be cold, but we live in Scotland so own plenty of warm clothes Grin

I found it so useful to do a walking tour, it made sense of the modernist anonymous buildings for example, and we went to places we wouldn't have thought of. Also the Jewish memorial which is lots of blocks to walk around, and a boat trip on tne river.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 31/01/2026 17:46

Reichstag, get it booked in good time.
Memorial behind the Brandenburgh Gate.
Jewish Museum

tanstaafl · 01/02/2026 11:56

OP do you mean you have 3 full days in Berlin or you’re arriving on the first day, leaving on the 3rd day?

You say you like walking but if it’s the latter you either concentrate on the central area and walk or get the subway to save time.

A pp recommended the old Templehof airport site but if only got one full day I don’t think that’s worth the trip.

EnterQueene · 01/02/2026 13:08

We have 3 full days - arriving Tuesday teatime and leaving Friday evening - so all Wednesday/Thursday/Friday to explore. A friend recommended Potsdam but it is a train journey. Has anyone been & is it worth it?

I haven’t been but really want to see dead chicken alley!

Hi EnterQueene, I’m a Berliner of over 30 years and have given recommendations many, many times under various names over the years on this site. Maybe do a search (if it’s working) and have a look at what has come up in the past.

Apart from that, afraid late Feb is a terrible time to be seeing Berlin ☹️. It’s largely miserable. The cold we can all cope with, but the dreary sky is soul-curlingly awful. The ‘felt’ temp is -14 here right now. Very slippery. I do hope you manage to hit on the few days of sunshine we get at this time of year.

Apart from that, Berlin has too much to offer to see it all in a few days - you need to be very clear about the kind of thing you like and plan accordingly. If you like history, what era? Can you handle the hardcore Holocaust stuff? Does modern art float your boat? Do you want authentic Berlin or the touristy ‘Trabi tour’ version?

Oh, and Berliners think tourists who take bike tours through the centre of town are insane! How good is your accident insurance?

Brefugee · 01/02/2026 13:41

I will never ever not recommend the Spionage Museum (spy museum) on Potsdamer platz. There are a lot of pretty good walking tours, we usually do one on the first morning in a new-to-us city, because you get a good feel for it.

Or a river trip, they're usually fun.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 02/02/2026 00:03

We had a week in Berlin, and took the train to Potsdam. It's quite a long trip and although I liked the old town, I felt we'd have been better seeing Potsdam properly, on its own, ideally in the better months when we could enjoy the palace grounds properly.
There's more than enough in Berlin itself to keep you very busy for 3 days.

tanstaafl · 02/02/2026 08:51

OP, do you or DD have an interest or curiosity about the Cold War and the division of Berlin?

There’s other things to see , the zoo, the big Tiergarten park, the Olympic stadium, KaDeWe department store, the cafe David Bowie frequented in Savignyplatz but Berlins USP is the Berlin Wall story.

rookiemere · 02/02/2026 09:04

Don’t do the hop on hop off bus. Due to German labour laws they stop for a 20 minute break at many of the stops so it was a complete waste of money.
I didn’t rate the spy museum at all unless you’re bringing DCs with you.
Those are a few things to avoid, but everything else was fab. I don’t want to repeat anything so one other thing that DS19 particularly enjoyed was dinner in a big beerkeller. There was hearty food, oompah music and unlike the UK no obviously drunk people.

That is helpful to know about Potsdam - I thought that may be the case, but useful to have it confirmed, so thank you. It looks like there will be more than enough to see in 3 days in Berlin itself.
Thank you to everyone else who has provided advice and suggestions. I am not expecting good weather at the end of February - we live in Scotland, so grey winter skies are not a dealbreaker Grin

Just be aware it's way, way worse than grey winter skies - I have family in Scotland and go there a lot, I've never experienced anything there comparable to the vicious cold in Berlin. I was there last week and the streets were so icy it was pretty much impossible to walk anywhere, people were falling over all over the place and a chunk of the U-Bahn was down because - apparently - electricity pylons had frozen. Plus flights all cancelled. Funnily all the Berliners moan just like the Brits about how badly organised everything is for the cold. Not to put you off, you can still enjoy yourself but it's still a shock.
