Naples in feb half term?

hellorotten · 19/01/2026 16:30

I really want to go away but can’t afford anywhere warm or the skiing holiday they we’d all love!

Im now looking at Naples. We have two teens (14 and 16). Plan would be lots of mooching, Pompeii, catacombs, and eating lots of pizza.

i know we’d need to wrap up warm but that would be the same wherever we go.

Has anyone else been at this time of year an / or with teens and could advise?

OP posts:

Just quickly - you wouldn't have to wrap up too warm, I'd expect temps of 12-15 degrees Celsius. Could be rainy though.

zurigo · 19/01/2026 16:34

I agree - it's unlikely to be cold. Might be wet, might be chilly in the evenings, but Naples is great! So much to see and do, plus you can jump on the Circumvesuviana and visit Pompeii and Herculaneum (Ercolano). Just leave your valuables at home and be very aware of your surroundings. Most crime is petty - jewellery, bags, sunglasses, etc - but you don't want to be a victim of crime.

Hi op I would advice against naples if you will be spending a lot of time there. Pompei is beautiful. I stayed there . We went to Naples for one day and I and I had the shock of my life . There were loads of imigrants all over the place , laying on all the pavements, injecting . Shitting on the floor . Also some were naked running around . I don’t know what it’s like now mind but this was 3 years ago

Hobbitfeet32 · 19/01/2026 16:38

We went in Feb half term a few years ago. Kids slightly younger. Had a great time.its a love it or hate it place but we liked the grittiness. Did the underground tour, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius. Lots of nice food and drinking and mooching about. Yes there’s a lot of pick pocketing but just be careful like you would in any other city

Wtf where did you go? Can only assume you got lost or didn't take any advice in advance about avoiding dodgy suburbs.
BTW so weird that you're the foreign one in Naples and you're out there spotting "immigrants"!

OP Naples is lovely and so fun, hectic but full of life. If your DC like football it's extra special!

Iwasneverafan · 19/01/2026 16:45

I wouldn’t suggest Naples as a “go to” holiday with kids tbh
The Marina area is OK but there are much nicer places to visit imo

ChaliceinWonderland · 19/01/2026 16:47

Its beautiful. Take the traggheto from the molo to procida or ischia.
Pompeii lots of walking. My favourite city in Italy.

Purlant · 19/01/2026 16:48

Naples is a great place. Ignore the poster who talks about it like it’s Victorian London. The bus station isn’t the most pleasant part of town (think pre-development Kings Cross), but there are some beautiful neighbourhoods to stay in. I felt completely safe there, there is so much to see and do, food is great. I’m not sure about February, but it’s got to be better than weather in the UK - and you’ll be in beautiful Naples!!

Redcandlescandal · 19/01/2026 16:49

If you think Naples itself might be too gritty, I thoroughly recommend Sorrento. Direct trains to Pompei.

Im not racist or against imigrants at all by the way . I thought it would come across that way. It was sad . I bought a few of them pizzas . And one of them threw it straight in the Bin. It was horrible . It it was September 2023. Dont know what was going on out there but it was awful . And Naples . We visited the museum there . That was lovely mind

Funny, I hated Sorrento with a passion. Went in early Oct so maybe Feb is different but it seemed like a Disneyland recreation of what an Italian town looks like. Full of slow walking loud voiced tourists (yes I'm aware of the irony) talking photos of everything and eating in overpriced restaurants on the pavement, touts selling plastic crap with lemon print on, and huge tour groups taking up the road. Loads of gorgeous towns nearby which I would go to instead. Naples is so much better imo!

Are you sure you went to Naples?! We stayed right by the train station so relatively central. Every morning (I’ll admit I don’t know whether or not they were immigrants) unsavoury looking characters were selling what looked like stolen goods on tarpaulins on the street. At one point, in what seemed like a touristy area, an Italian man stopped me and told me to move my phone out of my pocket or someone would steal it.

On the train to Pompeii three men tried to pickpocket my husband and steal his sunglasses.

I’m relatively well travelling in the western world and it was by far and away the most crime ridden place I’ve ever visited.

As PP said, I didn’t feel particularly unsafe but I felt like I needed to be hyper vigilant about my possessions at all times. I wouldn’t discourage people from going, but I think it is a fair warning as nobody warned is and we were quite shocked by it.

Yes the train station is a rough area.
You're describing people selling tat, yes I saw that in Naples, and see the same in Paris, Rome, Berlin, Cardiff etc.

It's nice of someone to point out you had your phone in an unsecure place. I tell people on the tube in London if their backpack is undone.

PP said she saw people run around naked and insinuated they were eating pigeons!

RowenaCoxwell · 19/01/2026 17:11

I wouldn’t go to Naples, on the occasions I’ve been it has felt unsafe. A friend went 3 weeks ago and she said the same thing. If you haven’t been already, try Seville or even Malaga, the weather will be as good as Naples and plenty of direct flights.

Berlinlover · 19/01/2026 17:21

@theheckisgoingon28 I loved Naples but can understand why someone would find it intimidating, I find it hard to believe people were running around naked in a busy city.

You’ve obviously never been to Croydon 🤣

girlfromthesouthcountry · 19/01/2026 22:50

How about Rome instead? Loads to see and not quite as 'gritty' as Naples. Obviously weather isn't guaranteed, but we went in Feb half term (with teens) and it was cloudless and 20 degrees for five days - full on t shirts and ice cream, with a jumper in the evenings. Absolutely perfect.

jamandcustard · 19/01/2026 22:53

Naples is pretty grim. I wouldn’t stay there if I had the choice.

Malaga is lovely…..we went last January …..felt safe ….and stunning buildings….and orange trees everywhere 🍊

MinnieMountain · 20/01/2026 06:28

We stayed in Pompeii. I liked it and it's easy to get the train to Herculaneum.

wineosaurusrex · 20/01/2026 06:38

I have travelled all over the world and I there are very few places i dislike and wouldnt visit again. I can think of only two cities in the world that i really disliked and Naples is one of them. And Italy is one of my favourite countries so thats really saying something. Go to any other city in Italy instead!

wineosaurusrex · 20/01/2026 06:39

(Although I didn't feel unsafe and have no issue with immigrants.)

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 20/01/2026 08:01

Hi sorry to hijack the thread. I’m thinking of going to Sorrento. Never been before. Would posters recommend it?
After reading the posts about Naples I’m now unsure.
I don’t want to go anywhere described as ‘gritty.’
I’d like to visit the local cultural sights and visit restaurants- without feeling like I’ve been ripped off.
Thanks.
