European summer break recommendations? Hidden gems with short flights/transfers

Magpie1976 · 15/01/2026 09:14

Hi can anyone pls recommend a summer holiday destination - a small city/town/village a short transfer from the airport by public transport (flying direct from north UK, no more than 3 hours flight time). Relaxing, some stuff to do/places to explore, good for a variety of ages, under 30C on average. Previously we have liked Krakow, Lake garda, Salzburg, Llubjana but know there are so many parts of Europe that we have no idea about and wonder if there are any hidden gems/recommendations. Any ideas? Thank you!

I really liked Gdansk but you may not want to go to Poland again. Riga might ve worth a look, its been recommended to nw a few times.

We really enjoyed Santander, flew from Manchester airport. Much cooler temps in summer than the costas and so much to do. Very Spanish!

Stockholm, beautiful in summer, easy to get around, loads to do.

Terrribletwos · 15/01/2026 11:39

Santander is nice with an easily accessible (3miles from centre) airport by regular buses.

The city itself has lovely beaches and it's easy to bus or train to Comillas and other little towns up the Cantabrian coast towards Asturias. There is also a short boat trip from Santander to a beach (Laredo? off the top of my head) going the other direction towards Bilbao.

Stresa Lake Maggiore. 45 mins transfer from Milan Malpensa. Boat trips to the islands, animal park, botanical gardens, mountain top luge. Gorgeous scenery.

I love Malaga, the town, not the coastal resorts. We always go off season as find it too hot in Summer, but google says its a max of 30' in summer. The bus from the airport used to be 3 euro reach and very easy to find a stop near your hotel/apartment.

Budapest
Reykjavik

Luxembourg. Look it up. Has everything you need and it is a stunning country. All public transport is also free in the whole country as is wifi.

Magpie1976 · 15/01/2026 12:46

Thanks. Some great ideas here. Please keep them coming. A long time ago I visted Gdansk and loved it - one for the list. Also going to look at Santander and Luxembourg as would not have thought of these.

Cavtat in Croatia. Fly into Dubrovnik and Cavtat is about 10 mins away by taxi. You can visit the city of Dubrovnik by boat for the day (it's much further from the airport than Cavtat is). Cavtat is a lovely little seaside town with plenty of places to eat.

We absolutely loved Tossa de Mar. An easy transfer from Girona or the bus from Barcelona. Proper small town but in beautiful setting with several beaches and the coastal path for hiking. Great restaurants and shops plus old town and medieval castle. A cheap day trip into Barcelona on the very comfortable bus. Honestly, I can’t think of anything better for your brief. We went late August, temp around 28.

Southern French alps. Fly to marseille or nice. Get train into hills!

MiddleAgedDread · 15/01/2026 13:01

Porto but might top 30 later in the summer

How about the Austrian alps. Depending on your local airport, a flight to Innsbruck? Seefeld is beautiful in the summer with loads of walks, swimming, a train station where you can visit Germany and Innsbruck. If you can’t fly to Immabruck, you can catch the train from Munich-I did this with my pre teen kids after spending a couple of days in Munich which is a great city for families. And the train was an adventure! I’ve found the Austrian hotels are good value for families and food is great.

Bilbao is nice, we combined with San Sebastian (pricey, but fabulous). Also have a look at Carcassonne, I haven't been since teenage years and it wouldn't fill a week not sure how long you want to go for. Porto is another of my favourites, lovely vibe and nice weather, typically below 25 even in August.

Billund - if you have lego fans and/or children. Airport is next to everything, amazing indoor water park, and opportunity to go and explore more if Denmark.

PixelDustMom · 15/01/2026 15:16

Mijas Pueblo, beautiful white washed village.
Flight 3 hours or less, 30 mins from airport. Close to venture into Malaga or to the beach. Has lots of lovely restaurants.

Bjorkdidit · 15/01/2026 15:17

I came on to recommend Gdansk as you can get the train to the coast and there's a big spa and wellness forest walking culture so you could definitely fill a few days with relaxation plus the city.

exiledfromcornwall · 15/01/2026 15:23

La Rochelle on the west coast of France is lovely. Not sure about flights from the north, but once there the centre is reachable by a bus service from the airport. While there you could visit the Ile de Re, by bus or (I think) boat.

Cordoba is amazing and a short train ride from Málaga

DisplayPurposesOnly · 15/01/2026 15:55

Aarhus, Denmark

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 15/01/2026 16:13

Malaga has everything.
I was so surprised when I visited. Beaches, history, culture, great food, architecture, retail therapy…
Easy hop from the airport, and many places to visit along the coast by public transport if you fancy a day away.

Riga is the one place I would never return to. We went in winter and I have been told it’s nice in summer but I find it hard to believe.

Padua in Italy. Totally charming and a little undiscovered - so far! It is gorgeous in its own right with lots of culture and things to see + great food and ambience. Best thing, it's only 25 minutes on the train to Venice. Easy to get to Verona and Bologna also. Totally loved the place.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 15/01/2026 18:51

Copenhagen. Great little city plus the option of a excursion to Sweden by a 40 minute train ride.
