European summer break recommendations? Hidden gems with short flights/transfers

Hi can anyone pls recommend a summer holiday destination - a small city/town/village a short transfer from the airport by public transport (flying direct from north UK, no more than 3 hours flight time). Relaxing, some stuff to do/places to explore, good for a variety of ages, under 30C on average. Previously we have liked Krakow, Lake garda, Salzburg, Llubjana but know there are so many parts of Europe that we have no idea about and wonder if there are any hidden gems/recommendations. Any ideas? Thank you!

Riga is the one place I would never return to. We went in winter and I have been told it’s nice in summer but I find it hard to believe.

it is gorgeous in summer. It’s very green, walkable, stunning buildings, lots of history, overall a nice chill vibe. Lovely for a city break, also the coastline with amazing beaches is just a 20min train journey away.

We spent a couple of summers in Prien am Chiemsee, between Munich and Salzburg. Small town on a lake. You can rent pedloes, take the ferries across the lake to the other villages or to the two islands, one has a huge palace and the other is very traditional and full of nature. We have very fond memories of our trips there.

Granada in Spain. The Alhambra Gardens on a hot day are just magical.
Rome and Villa d'Este Tivoli Gardens
Vienna - lovely city - art, music, vineyards, hikes, great markets
Budapest - best city ever imo.
Lisbon is lovely and has a beach for hot days - a day trip to Sintra is amazing
Barcelona too - great city with a beach.

Thank you to everyone who responded. I’ve researched all the suggestions and narrowed it down to Santander and Gdansk. Flights look reasonable for both. Just looking at accommodation and possible itineraries now. Thanks!

Castro Urdiales near Bilbao, lovely little town to stay in and easy to go into Bilbao for some culture, we were travelling on the ferry

@Magpie1976 would you be interested in the total solar eclipse which will be visible from Spain / Portugal on 12 August? Just something else to throw in the pot when making your decision. I know my kids would be interested if we were considering Spain this summer.

Thanks. This sounds amazing! Unfortunately this time in august is too late for us but would have been great!

If you decide on Santander, I'd highly recommend a trip out to Lierganes (we didnt hire a car and went by local train), its in the mountains and feels more like an Alpine village than Spanish, completely unexpected and very pretty. Also a trip to see the prehistoric cave paintings and Santillana del Mar (we did this as an organised day trip) 🙂
