Feel a bit sick at how much our one week trip cost

We had a one week trip over Christmas to Barbados. Never been away before at that time of year but for various reasons, DP and I wanted a week just us two.

We just finished paying our holiday credit card off and realise that on one week of food and reasonable excursions like museum tickets, we spent £2,000. We knew Barbados would be expensive and we didn’t eat out every day, but even mid range meals for two were coming back at £200+.

Our 7 night trip cost over £2,000 per person. Not staying anything luxury and flying economy!

St Lucia is absolutely beautiful, I agree. Barbados is different I reckon - more real, more lived in, not just for tourists. The interior, Welchman Hall Gully and all over the east and north coast are stunning though.

Irrespective of spending money, £2k for flights and accommodation in Barbados sounds like an absolute bargain. Were you in a youth hostel and did you fly indirectly? Ive looked at the Caribbean around Christmas and never seen anything less than £6k for flights and accommodation
Friends of ours were there over NYE this year, and I think she said they got minimal change from £40k. And they only flew premium, not even business. (Friend, husband, 2 kids and 2 sets of grandparents).

Anyway, you can’t take it with you, is how I look at these things.

You went to the Caribbean at Christmas - not a budget choice. Like others I think the amount you spent is fairly modest for the type of holiday, Barbados is notoriously expensive.

But when you say food was mediocre, where did you eat? Lots of local places sell great home cooked food but too many tourists won't step away from the resorts and the surrounding restaurants that are geared up just for tourists and you don't get given the best quality food in places that know they'll get the people from the resorts in no matter what crap they serve! Ironically if you read reviews, you'll always find it's the restaurants geared up just for tourists that have poor reviews compared to the little west Indian restaurant shacks near the beaches.

We seek out authentic places and are well travelled. I guess I just thought Barbados was over rated. Life would be boring if we all liked the same eh, variety is the spice of life 😊

I agree, we head to our 63rd country so we definitely love variety. To be fair for all there is great West Indian cooking to be had in Barbados, I never felt there was enough different food choices there. We went to Grenada in Feb last year and the food choices were fantastic.

Anywhere that is stuffed full of very rich people is expensive- you should have known this in advance. Going somewhere exotic over Christmas is always ruinously expensive. I suggest you do more research and plan better next time.

That sounds a good plan and honestly the elephant dress and backpack will be fab. One of the better aspects is that all beaches are public so jump on a reggae bus which is great fun with a cooler of rum punch, the hotel will sort it and enjoy the beautiful beaches.

Yes deffo go on the Reggae buses quite an experience! Also try Cuz’s fish cutters bloomin delicious for an inexpensive lunch. I used to live there (dad is Bajan). you will love it there’s so much to see and do around the island and if you fancy some celeb spotting go up to Sandy Lane beach where they stay as all beaches are public in Barbados. Barbados is so easy to get around only 21 x14 miles. Go up to Bathsheba on the East Coast beautiful but be careful as dangerous to swim there and the Animal Flower Cave in St Lucy aww I want to go back! Enjoy!
