Feel a bit sick at how much our one week trip cost

We had a one week trip over Christmas to Barbados. Never been away before at that time of year but for various reasons, DP and I wanted a week just us two.

We just finished paying our holiday credit card off and realise that on one week of food and reasonable excursions like museum tickets, we spent £2,000. We knew Barbados would be expensive and we didn’t eat out every day, but even mid range meals for two were coming back at £200+.

Our 7 night trip cost over £2,000 per person. Not staying anything luxury and flying economy!

It's going to cost us around that for a week on the Norfolk broads this summer. It is what it is 🤷‍♀️

Sorry where do you live where £4k is a “very big chunk of a deposit” for a house?

They used to say 10k was the lowest deposit for a first time buyer of which 4K is two fifths but the way prices are recently it’s probably more like 15-20k.

If you can afford it and enjoyed it it’s not a problem.

Charlize43 · 05/01/2026 21:08

Hope you had fun and enjoyed it.

What's money, if not to have fun with. Enjoy the memory.

I’m so sorry, we were shocked when we went with friends. It’s an extreme example of an island economy - everything is imported and jacked up price x 10 for actually not as nice quality produce you get elsewhere. 14 USD for raspberries in the supermarket that were moulding. God forbid you drink any alcohol or cocktail that isn’t rum based. We went to one place where a glass of veuve cliqot was 50 USD. I think if you go regularly you get smart to it (like buying your drinks in the duty free on the way out). But it’s shockingly expensive I agree. I also found it quite boring… we wanted to do excursions but it’s very sun lounger oriented tourism and ran out of them quite quickly. Glad I saw it given all the hype but wouldn’t go back.

It isn't a boring place in the slightest, it is boring to be sitting on a sunbed day in day out in a hotel complex - you might as well have gone short haul. The island is fantastic and you didnt put the effort in to see any of it! You walk to bus stops and get on buses! It's not 1980's Spain with clip board toting holiday reps ushering you on to coach trips to ceramics factories and bull rings!

CoffeesandWine453 · 05/01/2026 21:09

That sounds pretty average for Barbados. The Caribbean is extremely expensive

Swissmeringue · 05/01/2026 21:09

4 grand for a week in Barbados over Christmas is very cheap. If you managed to get it all in for that price then I'd be happy and move on tbh.

RubyFatball · 05/01/2026 21:10

It’s absolute peak season, Christmas in Barbados. Very flashy crowd and a different experience than other times of year there. I think prices for everything get hiked accordingly, even down to RPs on the beach! Where did you eat out?

Theredjellybean · 05/01/2026 21:15

I'm just looking at booking for Christmas this year to Caribbean...nothing below 3.5 k per person for all inclusive
Flights alone 1k each of we go self catering.
I'd say 4k for two all in for Christmas week is absolute bargain
Please tell me how you got cheap flights.
As for 200£ per person for dinner... honestly I had an average two course lunch with one glass of wine and tap water in London today and with service etc it was £70 ...dinner regularly well over 100...

Gosh I could never find Barbados boring - there’s so much to do! Flower Forest, Andromeda Gardens, Harrison’s Caves, submarine, helicopter, the beautiful east coast, St Lucy, Mount Gay rum, Earthworks, water sports, Morgan Lewis Mill, Sunbury and I’m sure there’s more than that!
it’s a lovely, safe, friendly island with fantastic places to eat (I love The Fish Pot) and loads of interesting things to do.

I don’t think it’s too bad! My partner and I just went to Mexico for a week over Christmas and spent a little more than this. Enjoy it, money is for spending and making memories!

Shinyandnew1 · 05/01/2026 21:22

But surely once you'd had one meal out at £200+, you'd have realised the cost and would either be able to times that by however many nights you were there and work out what you would spend, or decide to eat in the apartment a few times instead?

Still, it's done now!

Crikey, need to really appreciate where we live! Norfolk is lovely but never ushered to be so spendy 😀

£2000 for meals and excursions for 2 people for a week seems like a lot of money. Was there no way to each cheaper,? Did you eat out all the time?

If you read the entire post you’d of seen lots of answers to your questions.

Boat hire is ££££!

Evaka · 05/01/2026 21:33

We burn through money on holidays too OP. Focus on the sunny memories and skip nights out for a few weeks ;)

BluntAzureDreamer · 05/01/2026 21:33

I went to Barbados a couple of years ago and ate at the local fish shacks on the beach most nights, it was dirt cheap and amazing. A flying fish sandwich or a jerk chicken wrap for a few quid. Plus a couple of rum punches in plastic cups and we were happy as Larry! 😁 Worth remembering for next time 😉

But either way, you've had a lovely time, and after all, isn't that what money is for?

4babiesforever · 05/01/2026 21:35

Hope you had a great time but how did you manage to pay it off so quickly?!

Legolava · 05/01/2026 21:40

Meh I don’t see the issue. My last holiday was about 7k spends. 3 weeks mind for 4. The holiday on its own about 20k. Can’t take it with you.

21ZIGGY · 05/01/2026 21:42

I have just come back from las vegas for 5 days over new year. It was expensive, but we were prepared for it. In one bar, it cost forty dollars for 2 glasses of wine! All in we spent around £5500. We gambled sixty dollars in total between us so it's not on that. It's a hell of a lot of money, but we had a great trip. And we were prepared for it, and I suppose, that's all you can ask if you knew that's what you were going to spend, there's nothing you can do about it now. As long as you had a good time, thats all that matters

TiredCatLady · 05/01/2026 21:53

£4k in total for the Caribbean over Xmas is pretty good going to be honest. Have a look at what flights alone to e.g. Mexico would cost you for the same week. The Caribbean is generally horribly expensive for food and drink and you tend to be stuck or major carriers or packages.

pictoosh · 05/01/2026 20:41

More on the house deposit. How strange.
Don't think you've struck a nerve, no.

The house deposit comment definitely struck a nerve in the OP due to the somewhat tetchy reply.

Bellie710 · 05/01/2026 22:08

If I went away with DH for a week to Barbados I would expect it to cost at least £6k including flights, if I went over xmas I would expect to add at least £2k on to that. That is not an extravagant holiday so I can only assume you couldn't afford to be there??

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 05/01/2026 22:11

Clearly you've never been to CenterParcs

A caravan in Skegness
Would have cost you so much less.
The English coast should not be missed
So put it on the bucket list.

Yeah because comparing Barbados in winter to Skegness is a comparison 😂
