I have to go for a course of treatment for 4 weeks in Woodbridge, Suffolk mid-July. DH & DS (3) are coming but I'll be out of the picture weekdays. We don't know the area at all. What things are there for DH to do with DS? eg soft play areas, parks, nice beaches, farms, toddler groups.....? Also can you suggest any family friendly pubs & restaurants please.

TIA!

You can head off to Jimmy's Farm - probably about 20 mins drive away!

If you like fresh fish head off to Butley

Lots to do around there - depends on how far your dh wants to travel - you've also got Colchester Zoo which is pretty good.

You can also head over to Alton Water and hire bikes (with child seats) and cycle round the lake and have picnics etc.

Hope thats ok for a starter!

Thanks Sophierosie. That's really helpful. I think DH is beginning to worry about how he'll manage day in day out so I'd like to reassure him with plenty of details.

I think he'd prob like some more local stuff as well so if anyone has any more ideas?

There's also thorpeness and aldeburgh which are lovely beaches with lots of little cafes and shops and apparently Aldeburgh has the best fish and chips in the country.

Framlingham castle is about a 20 min drive and would be great fun for DS as there's loads of room to run about and you can have a tour around the castle.

worth going to Sutton Hoo
the river and boats are just lovely in themselves
Rendlesham forest? lots of nice countryside

There is a lovely place called Easton Farm Park with friendly animals and nice play areas in and outdoors. My kids used to want to live there! Great pubs by the water too esp The Maybush at Waldringfield. Good soft play at Martelsham ( Kids Kingdom) in case you get English weather. Also lots of castles near and museums, if DS likes knights and stuff. Lots of good beaches too, not far to Southwold and Aldeburgh. Snape has childfriendly pub as well as the maltings.... there is loads to do!!!

MarkStretch · 09/06/2008 21:14

The museum of east anglian life is about 20 mins drive too in Stowmarket but loads of fun.

VanillaPumpkin · 09/06/2008 21:15

Woodbridge isn't that big really. There is nothing like soft play for example as far as I know. That will involve a drive......There is a cinema and a swimming pool though and a big outdoor play park (by the tennis club) and a train station and lots of cafes and a library and a river, so boats to look at.
Loads to do in surrounding area though. Ipswich is not far (Christchurch Park and def soft play there for eg). There is Easton Farm Park too in Easton which is free if there is a farmers market on....Castle ruins in Framlingham and Sutton Hoo but 3 probably too young for that....might be a maze Sutton Hoo this year?????
Suffolk coast is lovely, Southwold, Walberswick, Aldeburgh, Thorpeness has a boating lake which is fun. And Felixstowe is full of naff arcades and candy floss, lots to...er...look at .

Thanks MS! DH is beginning to look less worried!

Well if he gets really fed up he could go here!

VanillaPumpkin · 09/06/2008 21:20

Hah, my computer slowed to a halt but glad to see there are a number of crossover recommendations with my post.
Ther is a Birds of Prey sactuary around there somewhere.
Oh and Aldeburgh def has the best Fish and Chips, especially if eaten on the sea front (Happy Days!).

chocolateshoes · 09/06/2008 21:20

Ohh lots more! Thank you all! Will print this all out before we go. We';ll have no internet (gulp!!)

VanillaPumpkin · 09/06/2008 21:21

You can get on line at the library I bet. It is a lovely place to be!

VanillaPumpkin · 09/06/2008 21:22

Woodbridge, not the library..... Ho hum.

cece · 09/06/2008 21:22

the soft play in Martelsham has free tea and coffe and squash and biscuits on weekdays before 11.30 if I remember correctly. At least they did when I last went there.

cece · 09/06/2008 21:23

oh and the museum in Ipswich is full of stuffed animals if you like that sort of thing!

MarkStretch · 09/06/2008 21:23

Here's Easton Farm Park.

chocolateshoes · 09/06/2008 21:24

the Martlesham soft play sounds perfect as I will be in Martlesham for my treatment but we're renting a house in W'bridge. It does sound lovely. Hope I get to see some of it!

These leisure centres are all nearby for swimming. I'm going to stop now before I turn into a Tourist Information Centre!

FrannyandZooey · 09/06/2008 21:27

oh yes you CAN get online at the library

or so I hear

Have got to pack pc away for work tomorrow. So thanks for all your contributions. I'm starting to feel a bit more positive about this trip now that I know there's stuff for DS & DH.

There is a little childrens boating lake in Woodbridge (near Kingston field, childrens swing area) which is good for sailing toy yachts on. Nice walks along the river from there too.

There's also a windmill and a tide mill in Woodbridge that you can look around and which work occasionally.

chocolateshoes · 10/06/2008 19:05

Thanks Snorkle!
