Doncaster

Butterbeanbutterbo · 10/11/2025 22:26

I don’t know about ‘nichest’ but Timisoara in Romania was lovely. Squares, churches, museums, parks, bars by the river

Radiatorvalves · 10/11/2025 22:27

What do you mean by niche? What do you like?

Montréal, Genoa, Marseilles, Lille…. Would be my recommendations.

Arran2024 · 10/11/2025 22:28

Lucerne in Switzerland. Fly to Zurich then it's about an hour by train. Loads to see and do.

CharlotteCChapel · 10/11/2025 22:28

Bolton, it also good location for days out.

Doncaster

That certainly meets the brief.

Kind of not really explored, not totally mainstream. City breaks everyone just thinks Paris, Rome, Barcelona etc. but I’m looking for something different

Treviso.
Bari.
Dinan.

Not sure about niche, but maybe try lesser known cities in common European cites, or capitals in lesser visited countries? Where have you already been?

DH a conference in Zaragoza, Spain once. I'd never heard of it beforehand. I really enjoyed wandering around myself in the day whilst he was at the conference. Multiple museums, the river, basilica and the food were great.

Also enjoyed Malaga. Not the coastal resorts but the 'city' itself. Easy to get the bus from the airport, easy to walk around and options for a day trip to say Rhonda.

Regensburg. Nearest airports are Munich or Nuremberg.
Gothic cathedral, on the Danube, lovely old town;
Hotel Orphee is a great place to stay

I’m off to Vilnius soon. Riga was beautiful- amazing city

Restlessinthenorth · 10/11/2025 23:10

Thessaloniki . Awesome city. Cheaper flights, great food, culture and history

RedBulb · 10/11/2025 23:14

Not as niche as some of the suggestions, but I really enjoyed Lisbon and Oslo, both beautiful places and lots to see and do.

Budapest was also fantastic.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/11/2025 23:19

@BreezyFish ones I have been to that might fit - Utrecht ( love it) , Stuttgart -,, Antwerp , Split - Thessaloniki , Odense ( it’s a beautiful road between Copenhagen over to Odense, you go over a fantastic causeway with like a fairytale setting) I liked all these places a lot

jackstini · 10/11/2025 23:19

Tirana in Albania - fabulous!

SingingSands · 10/11/2025 23:28

We have had a couple of amazing long weekends in Pécs, Hungary.

SpottyAardvark · 10/11/2025 23:30

Belfast. Fantastic place to spend a few days. More interesting & much cheaper than Dublin.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/11/2025 23:31

Oh I forgot to mention Gdansk

I love Nuremberg and Munich. Germany is very underrated as a destination. The area near Lake Constance (right in the very south) is like fairytale land - snow capped mountains, meadows, brown cows with bells..... so pretty.

There are many beautiful and fun German cities.

A friend of mine has done a lot of weekend in various Polish cities. She raves about it - really pretty town centres and cheap.

I've had Talinn is well worth visiting.

I also like Lucerne - I was there recently. VERY expensive though.

I'm also a big fan of Stockholm. The ABBA museum, the museum village opposite and the Vasa Museum a few yards down the toad were all fantastic. Swedes are friendly too and the food was good. The Vasa is a very old ship, kind of like the Mary Rose, but much better.

MinnieMountain · 11/11/2025 06:14

Baden-Baden.

I’ve never been but DH loved Stuttgart.
