Looking to go on some city breaks next year which are niche.

which city is the nichest you’ve been to?

OP posts:
MrsBucketHat · 11/11/2025 15:27

Not especially niche but I love Oslo, Stockholm, Lisbon, Budapest, Copenhagen, Granada, Sienna.

ginasevern · 11/11/2025 16:28

Carrara in Tuscany is well worth a visit. And of course it is very near to some very famous and wonderful places.

Rebootnecessary · 11/11/2025 16:31

Someone mentioned Riga, which I definitely endorse as it was beautiful and interesting. As a result, Tallinn is now on my list.

soontobeamama · 11/11/2025 16:57

York
Gdansk
Cork
Seville
Trieste
Salzburg
Lucerne
Palma
Bruges
Ghent

I’ve been to all of these over the past few years and would recommend.

A friend is just back from Carcasonne and loved it.

I think it depends what you mean by “niche” and what you are looking for in a city break.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 11/11/2025 17:05

Lublijana, going next month.
Tromso, going in Feb.
Have done numerous city breaks, my favourite being Seville. Not particularly niche though.

Bayonne - fabulous Basque culture/architecture and big into the rugby. Great food and lovely people. Short hop over to San Sebastian Donostia, or Biarritz which is down the road.

Padua/Padova. A hidden gem, such a lovely spot. Train to Venice for day or evening only half an hour away. Then to Bologna if you're hungry lol. But so much in Padova itself. See Scrovegni Chapel for what I mean - the fabulous Giotto paintings. And of course there's the basilica of St. Anthony of Padua, he'll help you FIND your way....

Cordoba. Such a lovely little city/town. There is so much to do here you will be amazed. Food of course is brilliant, and Sevilla and Granada close enough for a day trip. Get up early!

tobee · 11/11/2025 17:17

Haven't been for decades but Montreux. Stunning place.

FcukBreastCancer · 11/11/2025 17:23

Riga
Lisbon
San Sebastian
Kracow

On my list are Gdansk and Hull.

Blondeissimo · 11/11/2025 17:24

Vilnius is fabulous and very easy to explore. Also highly recommend Stockholm but thinking it may be a bit mainstream for the OP.

soupyspoon · 11/11/2025 17:26

Hull where we discovered the Hull Patty

TheGander · 11/11/2025 17:28

Agree about Belfast and Bilbao.
Years ago I spent a day in Jaen in Andalusia. No coast, few tourists, surrounded
by acres and acres of Olive groves . There’s an old Arab castle now a Parador and an interesting regional museum. I was the only visitor there when I went. Really a working Spanish city but has a certain charm.
Agree about Lille, if you push into Roubaix and Tourcoing and see how the French do post industrial.

newyorkbreakfast · 11/11/2025 17:28

Some of the cities listed are not on the usual tourist radar but equally not very picturesque. What are you looking for?
San Sebastian is accessible from Bilbao and has good food and coastal walks/beach scene
Leipzig - a mini Berlin with lots of history. You could also visit Weimar and Quedlingburg

Someone mentioned Bratislava but I would not make a special trip there. Tag it onto a short break in Vienna, at best.

Belfast - interesting museums but not very beautiful

TheGander · 11/11/2025 17:31

I agree about beauty @newyorkbreakfast but the problem with beauty these days is it attracts hordes of selfie stick wielding instagramers and you end up feeling like a sheep. I think slightly “ off” places these days can be more rewarding.

Londonmummy66 · 11/11/2025 17:31

Krakov, Oslo, Granada, Utrecht, Antwerp, Valetta, Munich, Leipzig, Chester, Cardiff and Wells.

Cynic17 · 11/11/2025 17:34

Misanthropologie · 11/11/2025 18:07

Alesund
Gdansk
Ljubljana
Strasbourg

ElectronicRenaissance · 11/11/2025 18:18

As with PPs, I'd always recommend Stockholm. Beautiful city, loads to see and do, and also easy to escape to the archipelago for a day.

However, if Stockholm is too mainstream, then what about Gothenburg? It's an ex-industrial city so not as traditionally "pretty" as Stockholm, but still beautiful, in my opinion, with some wide boulevards, canals, an old town and some really interesting museums and a great vibe. I liken it as the Swedish version of Glasgow to Stockholm's Edinburgh!

However, might be helpful OP if you narrow down what you look for in a city break - museums and art galleries or nightlife or cafe culture, or everything!

Edited for grammar.

Tootingbec · 11/11/2025 18:31

Strasbourg
Antwerp

Liverpool - not necessarily beautiful but really interesting re history, culture and general mooching
Hamburg - as above!

PeonyPatch · 11/11/2025 18:33

Reykjavik?

Blizzardofleaves · 11/11/2025 18:56

Kiruna
Helsinki
Lucerne (summer)
Salzburg in the winter (Xmas)
Cuitadella

anon2022anon · 11/11/2025 07:21

San Sebastian - never been anywhere like it

Shush! Don’t tell everyone about the world’s greatest foodie destination.

I adore San Sebastian and would hate to see it overrun with foreign tourists in the way Barcelona & Sevilla have been.

deplorabelle · 11/11/2025 19:03

OnlyOnAFriday · 11/11/2025 15:09

If anyone can recommend any nice off the radar German towns/cities I’d be interested in recommendations.

Sooo many. I don't know how off the radar you really mean but I'll try to be niche

Würzburg
Wismar
Greifswald
Karlsruhe

Less niche but if you haven't been you should definitely visit:

Trier
Dresden
Leipzig
Heidelberg
Nürnberg

ETA Lübeck and Travemünde

SweetChilliGirl · 11/11/2025 19:07

I loved Sarajevo and Mostar is a train ride away.
