Hi everyone. Am visiting Melbourne in two weeks and son will be working during the days. We have planned trip to Sydney one weekend and great ocean rd trip another weekend.
Can anyone recommend ‘must go to ‘places in and around Melbourne whilst son working.
I have been researching but any experiences that are not to miss would be great.
Happy to get train/ trams ,boat trips etc and even include overnight trip.
Thank you…am so excited to see my big guy .

Thank you . Shall google bush ranger 🤦‍♀️He lives very close to the convent.
I think I am staying on Victoria Street. Is it easy to travel to St Kildare erc ?

You'll have excellent PT where you are.

Victoria St is very long. If you're near Church St there's a tram along it (no.78) which ends a couple of blocks from the main shopping strip of St Kilda, and goes through the Prahran area recommended upthread. (Fantastic food market but I don't rate the shopping or the overall vibe.)

Otherwise straight up Punt Rd by car/Uber, or catch a train or tram most of the way into the city then change to go out to St Kikda.

North Richmond train station and surrounds can be sketchy due to the nearby safe drug injecting centre.

If you are into sport go for a tour of the MCG. There are fairy penguins on St Kilda Pier. Recently re-opened to public view. Try to get to some local music or theatre. The Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Federation Square is well worth a visit. The Koorie Heritage Trust also in Fed Square will give you some context on First Nations. Note cafes tend to open early,7 am and close around 3. Masses of fabulous restaurants of every cuisine and price range imaginable. The Botanic gardens are really lovely. For public transport download a Myki card onto your phone.Williamstown is a nice spot for a visit - close to the city, beach and park and great cafes.

Depending on weather, walking tour of city. You can also do self guided tour of laneway art in city.
state library is beautiful.
Art gallery and ACME at Fed square.
Botanic gardens also beautiful.
Day trips as suggested above, I personally love Ballarat and Sovereign Hill.
Have a great time

Weather forecast for Melbourne keeps changing 😭Is that normal? Am arriving 20th November!

The weather is incredibly changeable here in spring. Pack for hot, cool and wet!

A week or so we had a gorgeous sunny day where it got to over 30 and it was 13 and raining next day.

It's windy too, and the pollen count is very high on dry days.

The Melbourne weather is notorious for having all 4 seasons in 1 day. In that sense it’s very “English” and the same rules apply: wear layers and be prepared for anything.

Hibernatingsloth · 11/11/2025 16:49

No specific recommendations, but I love Melbourne ❤️
It's such a foodie city, great coffee shops, great restaurants and amazing food markets.
Very easy to get around, have a wonderful time, OP.

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 11/11/2025 16:56

Hi OP. We went in 2009 so I don't know how accurate this will be, but we stayed in St Kilda Beach with our then one year old. We absolutely loved it.

We had brunch sitting outdoors every morning, walked up and down the seafront, used the indoor seawater pool and went to the Sunday Market.

Wontbelongnow · 23/11/2025 21:37

Please can someone explain the myki card ! I have bought a 7 day one and only used it twice . Paid 61 dollars and it already says low balance. Am so confused.
Loving Melbourne so far. Weekend at Philip Island was fabulous.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 23/11/2025 23:00

If you bought a 7 day Myki it will expire in 7 days from date of first use regardless of how much you use it. So the 'low balance' warning is really telling you it'll expire soon.

KoalaBlue1 · 24/11/2025 09:26

Don’t get a Myki with an ending date
Just top it up as you go.
enjoy your trip.
Where are you off to next?

HundredMilesAnHour · 24/11/2025 10:08

@Wontbelongnow Glad you’re enjoying it so far. I am beyond jealous. Is it Great Ocean Road coming up next weekend?

The GOR was one of the first places I ever visited in Aus. It was the depths of Aussie winter and the beaches were deserted and everyone so quiet and it was absolute bliss. I was living in Hong Kong at the time and completely peopled out (it was impossible to ever be alone without hearing for others for longer than 30 seconds and after 2 years of this, I was starting to crack badly). The GOR was the best medicine ever. Still have happy memories of sitting with a coffee and an Anzac biscuit at a picnic table by one of the beaches watching the waves crash in and never wanting to leave. That was over a decade ago but it kickstarted an absolute love of Aus and it becoming my happy place. I hope you love it as much as I do/did.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 24/11/2025 10:17

If you get time The Johnston Collection.

StartupRepair · 24/11/2025 11:00

Hope you enjoyed the warm weather today.

CointreauQuaint · 14/12/2025 21:17

How was your trip @Wontbelongnow ? Am there in the new year, anything you would like/ wouldn’t recommend?

Hi all, just jumping on here! We’re in Melbourne seeing our daughter for Christmas. We had planned to watch the cricket for our last 5 days but we’re going to have a couple of days left over 😂 We’ve been to Philip island and the great ocean road, stayed our first 10 days in St Kilda. Any bright ideas? I’ve come up with the Mornington peninsula for a day trip. DD has been to the zoo already. There’s us DH and 2 adult sons

Tangwystl · 26/12/2025 22:33

There’s so much to do here, it’s hard to choose! You could head up to The Dandenongs to walk and explore the little towns, the giant redwoods, the Puffing Billy.. You could head to Warburton and float down the river, sitting in rubber rings, or go to the Yarra Valley to visit some wineries.
if you’re going down the peninsula, you could do the cable car up to Arthur’s Seat, visit Point Nepean or go to the hot springs. Sorrento is pretty too.
In the city you could do a cocktail, wine or foodie walking tour, or a mystery picnic.

I’m sure you’ve seen this, but it might give you some ideas

Tangwystl · 26/12/2025 22:36

Oh, and because all public transport is free at weekends, you could hop on a train and head to Bendigo or Ballarat (you might need to make a booking, but it’s still free)

Miranda65 · 26/12/2025 22:38

Will you still be there during the Australian Open (starts on 18th)? That would be great fun, if you can get tickets.

fashionqueen0123 · 26/12/2025 22:42

We did queen Victoria market, cooked most of our food from there
The Jail - this was so much fun! Got a photo of us as a convict and they do a fake trial and stuff
We did all the neighbours stuff but now you’d only be able to go to the street
Philip island is a must! Penguins are great.
st kilda
We also went to a museum but I forget which one.
The botanical gardens
