Would you go on a trip to London?

Myself and the family (young primary aged kids plus hubby) have always enjoyed a trip to the UK capital. The kids asked to go again next year (we are from Northern Ireland) but being put off by current issues reported in the mainstream media , do these issues actually exist or are they exacerbated by media outlets? Is it safe? We loved our last trip in 2024, kids are buzzing to return so advice welcome!

Very few big cities are super-safe. London is as safe as it has been for years.

Funny, I was assaulted on a train in kent. This year. Never had an issue in london.

I find Kent pretty rough to be honest , especially the larger towns.

My money's on GB news.

Ahh, yes. GB news spreading anti-Khan propaganda. Why do people watch that shit.

PeonyPatch · 03/11/2025 21:28

Well, I am just answering the thread. I don’t think anywhere is particularly safe. For the most part, London is fine. But it’s the capital of the UK, so it’s likely to be higher risk.

Clearinguptheclutter · 03/11/2025 21:28

Your first post mentions
“current issues reported in the mainstream media” please elaborate as I can’t see any and would really like to know what you’re worried about

JustSawJohnny · 03/11/2025 21:35

Of course.

We've always had great days out in London.

The only painful bit is how unnecessarily expensive train tickets are.

As for 'current issues' - the only thing I'd actively seek to avoid are the 'concerned parents and patriots' who supposedly gather to 'protect women and girls'.

Those fuckers scare the shit out of me.

Thank you, I’ve visited London from being a young child over 30 years ago. My kids loved it last year, we did all the major sights. I don’t mean anything about racism! Just every time I look at social media it is so negative about London. And being from Northern Ireland we are well accustomed to this negativity so I was merely asking a question to those who lived there. Despite those who are clearly trying to “pick a fight” I’m quite happy to take the words of the locals and book a trip. Thank you to the positive and realistic posters.

Oh I thought you were getting your anti- London views from "the mainstream media" in your OP.
Now apparently you're going off what you see on social media.
Perhaps London isn't the problem eh

pumpkinscake · 03/11/2025 21:39

Yes, just back from one, loved it

FrodoBiggins · 03/11/2025 21:40

ThrushorSparrow · 03/11/2025 21:19

If yourself wants to visit London yourself should come. Myself isn't aware of any particular issues - it's as safe as most other western capital cities.

Lol. Plus the reference to it as "a trip to the UK capital". Who says that. It's so tabloid coded.

I agree - are we Londoners just blind to these?

I can’t think of anything I’ve seen which would cause concern.

Please OP, can you just clarify what the “current issues” are that you are alluding to. I really don’t understand what is current that has alarmed you, that is on mainstream media or social media applying specifically to London?

What issues are you talking about? Belfast isn’t immune to issues itself…

Thank you for posting this. I don’t actually live in Belfast but it appreciated that one news post sums up your views on the entirety of Northern Ireland. To be honest, I’m sorry I asked now, would I want to visit London again, absolutely, but the hatred displayed by the women on this thread is shocking. I’m not racist, I love travelling, I was concerned after recent events portrayed on mainstream media, not GB news for the record. You have all made it very clear how you feel about where I live and it is extremely uncalled for in this day and age.

I live on the outskirts of London and haven’t changed a thing and have never felt unsafe whilst in town. Your choice, but anything can happen anywhere and to anyone. It’s certainly not just London where terrible things have happened in the world.

idratherbedrawing · 03/11/2025 21:51

@user1491934176as many have asked, could you please clarify what the ‘current issues’ you are seeing reported about London? I live here and like others nothing specific has got worse recently (I feel v safe here and have felt less safe in smaller UK towns esp with the cars going much faster, I live our 20mph streets for walking and cycling) but I’m also not aware of anything being reported as getting worse in the last few weeks. Trump and his supporters have been banging on about the islamification of London with some mad reporting about Sadiq Khan (all bollocks) but that started months ago and seems to have simmered down a bit recently so I’m confused about what you are referring to.

ExhaustedAndProbablyDrunk · 03/11/2025 20:29

Sums it up.

Ironically I wouldn’t go to Northern Ireland

Why not?

Charlize43 · 03/11/2025 21:55

I live in London and I'm still alive! I'm 58, work in Art Events and you'll often find me on trains / tubes & buses travelling from Central London to the Suburbs late at night as do many people who work in events / theatres / hospitality, hospital shifts, etc.

Crime goes on everywhere. I assume if your trip doesn't involve any dodgy or criminal activity (like equipping your kids with knives and taking on a rival gang) then you'll be fine. Most Londoners just go about their business.

Imagine if I asked if it was safe to take a trip to Northern Ireland (IRA & all that) you'd probably think I was being unrealistically alarmist.

80smonster · 03/11/2025 21:57

As I understand, it’s Cambridgeshire you’ve got watch your back in… London isn’t a dangerous city in my experience (lived here 46 years).

LIZS · 03/11/2025 21:57

Recent events? Nothing much out of the unusual recently afaik.

Thought it was social media which got you all scared a minute ago, now it's mainstream media again?

Noone has been hateful to you we're just asking what has allegedly changed in the last year and you've dodged the question about ten times.

Which makes your post sound disingenuous at best.

I do not know anything about the London mayor, I have seen snippets briefly on the news pages. This post has descended into a hate fest. God forbid one asks a question about safety of a city. I have only seen recent reports of a man stabbing a 14 year old who was then arrested for a mass murder attempt on a train.

We stayed with friends recently (Berkshire) and they said London was a no-go area these days. Given they spend all day watching GB News I suspect that's where it's coming from. Utter nonsense, London is one of the best cities in the world. Just don't wave your phone around (sensible advice wherever you are)

ACynicalDad · 03/11/2025 22:01

We live in zone 4, there’s so much to do for kids and I’m so pleased they get to live here, it’s a brilliant place for them to grow up. Definitely come.

Delphiniumandlupins · 03/11/2025 22:02

The stabbing at the weekend wasn't in London!

Perhaps glancing at "snippets on news pages" isn't the best way to be informed about London (or "the UK capital" as you called it for some reason).

The horrific train attack you referred to was in Peterborough.

The stabbings you're talking about happened in Peterborough, not London

Such a defensive attitude OP 🤔 all you've been asked is where you're getting your information from
