Is Gibraltar worth visiting?

Just that, really. We are staying east of Malaga. It’s about a 2.5hr drive each way and I’d like to know if we should attempt it. Thanks

I had this very conversation the other week with OH

He said no

Not sure why, thought it was just a British outpost with some Monkeys he said

I wondered if it was a bit Spanishy and therefore would be nice to go on holiday to, not sure.

NormasArse · 19/10/2025 19:30

It’s a weird place. We visited after a visit to Tarifa, and I’m glad we did, but once was enough.

Loved the walk where the monkeys were!

NormasArse · 19/10/2025 19:30

A day is enough!

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 19/10/2025 19:32

IMO, don't bother. The queues to cross the border can be huge - in both directions.
I'm sure it has got worse since I last did it pre-Brexit.

Arlanymor · 19/10/2025 19:32

I wouldn't drive five hours for it. I've been there due to being in a relationship at the time with serving personnel. It's not bad, but it's also an outpost.

Arregaithel · 19/10/2025 19:32

Would not do a 5 hr round trip tbh

This old reddit thread gives options

BCBird · 19/10/2025 19:35

I would say no. Went on a day trip when I was on a cruise. It was ok, but you are not missing out of you don't go.

newyorkbreakfast · 19/10/2025 19:35

Fab thank you. all. We shall stay put, near our Spanish beach!

It's interesting for about 2 hrs
Centre of Malaga is the jewel, including a Picasso museum

weegiemum · 19/10/2025 19:40

Totally not. Spent a day of our holiday in Spain visiting Little England!

It was the day that Croatia put England out of some tournament (can’t remember if it was World Cup or Euros 🤪) so the atmosphere that evening wasn’t great!

Notmybloodymonkeys · 19/10/2025 19:40

I work there (but live in Spain) and I do think it’s worth visiting - the Upper Rock Nature Reserve is stunning for one thing, and of course there are the monkeys. But I wouldn’t travel 2.5 hours each way especially as you could end up stuck in a queue at border control (potentially both ways) which would eat into your sightseeing time.

MisfitMaiden89 · 19/10/2025 19:42

I've been wondering this too.

We are off to Spain on Saturday and we have the option to book a day trip to Gibraltar. It's a 10 hour total trip.

I just don't know if I'll be disappointed with it being so 'British' but I imagine it will be an interesting place, maybe.

I just don't know if I fancy wasting a day of our 4 day trip for it. Maybe if we were staying longer.

Hoppinggreen · 19/10/2025 19:44

We went from Malaga once, it was ok but I wouldn't bother again
Plus if the Boarder Police decide to start playing silly buggers you could be there a while

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 19/10/2025 19:46

I also did the day trip when I was on a cruise years ago, pre Brexit. I enjoyed it, particularly the cable car ride to the top of the Rock, but I wouldn’t go hours out of my way to see it.
It was oddly fascinating to see how cheap the fags and booze were in the local Morrison’s, though, compared to the UK!

ThePoshUns · 19/10/2025 19:46

No it’s grim. The rock is ok but the filthy monkeys are disgusting.

Waitingfordoggo · 19/10/2025 19:47

I’ve been once and found it a bit depressing- not sure why, really. The only things I can remember about the place are the monkeys and a red phone box in the street. I have no intention of visiting ever again and definitely wouldn’t do a long drive to visit.

nee22 · 19/10/2025 19:49

i wouldn’t bother with Gibraltar. Ronda is a great day trip option, or Frigiliana. Both beautiful towns

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 19/10/2025 19:50

I live in Andalucía. Gibraltar is a bit of a hole. So many other nice places near Málaga if you want to do something. Ronda for instance.

janamo · 19/10/2025 19:52

Interesting to see it for the first time, but once is enough. However I wouldn't do a five hour round trip to see it.

Depending on where you are staying I think a day trip up the mountains to Ronda would be better. The road is winding and steep, but the views are stunning. You can get a bus for a few euro from San Pedro de Alcantara direct if you want to park there and let the bus driver take the strain! I'm sure the bus goes from Malaga also.

CaffeinatedSeagull · 19/10/2025 19:56

I went a couple of years ago for 3 nights (solely as I’d set myself a challenge to visit every European country at least once).

it’s very underwhelming. One day there is enough as there’s not much to see other than the rock, and the monkey walk.

Garamousalata · 19/10/2025 19:59

I really enjoyed visiting Gibraltar, it’s a fascinating mixture of cultures. We went out on a yacht and had dolphins swimming with us. We did the cable car, amazing views. We went over to the dark side, where the beaches are, weird. There’s a great choice of bars and restaurants down by the marinas. We saw the planes landing on the very short runway, We went to see the macaques. There’s extremely interesting history to learn about going back years. It’s an endlessly interesting place.

CheeseWisely · 19/10/2025 20:01

A friend of mine absolutely loves Gibraltar, but I don’t know if it’s because she lived in Andalusia for a while so it was a quick hit of ‘home’ without actually flying home. If I was in Malaga and up for a drive of that length I’d visit Seville or Granada instead.

Garamousalata · 19/10/2025 20:03

I’ve been to Granada and Seville, I found Gibraltar far more interesting. I can see I’m in a minority here. 😵‍💫

soupyspoon · 19/10/2025 20:04

So to highjack this, not enough for a weeks holiday?

Garamousalata · 19/10/2025 20:05

I was there for two weeks, I loved it.
