Malta, October, temperature and clothes

I'm off to Malta soon and have to pack very light. No space for surplus just incase clothes.

I was thinking 3 dresses, 1 skirt, 2 pairs of linen trousers, short sleeve tops trainers, sandals, On holidays I often wear a dress out at night then wear it during again casually during the daytime. Will it bee too chilly for summer dresses in the evening? Do I need a jacket/cardigan? Will trousers be too warm during the day?

You will definitely need a warm jacket or fleece for evening.

zacsGranny · 12/10/2025 13:23

I was just coming to ask for advice on the same thing.
We have been to Malta a lot, but never at the beginning of November.
Just booked Gozo for my birthday, and probably like you, only have 10Kg luggage allowance.
I'm thinking similar to you re clothes.
Will need sleeves in the evening, so layering is the answer.
I will travel in trousers and a hoodie and take trousers and cut-offs with several tops.
My concern is toiletries. Can buy some when I'm there, but some specifics I can't buy there or get in small quantities, so I'm thinking travel bottles?
Anything slightly heavy in handbag rather than the bag in overhead locker?
We used to keep our boat in Malta, and left all these things there, so was never a problem.
Any suggestions for keeping weight down appreciated - thanks.

oldFoolMe · 12/10/2025 14:48

You will need something warm for the evenings for sure - wear it on the flight!
Make sure you pack paracetamol- you can only buy it in a pharmacy so if you end up needing it for whatever reason I find it hard to get hold.

Holdonforsummer · 12/10/2025 14:50

I’ve been twice at this time of the year. Three years ago was glorious - 26 degrees. Last year was much more variable - more like 21 degrees with a breeze. So definitely being trousers and a jacket. Layers will be your friend here. I always wear my warmest outfit on the flight. Have fun!

bookmarket · 13/10/2025 08:41

Thanks for your really helpful reply. Perhaps we should all just converse with AI and never have a conversation ever again with another person to share ideas and experiences. Wouldn't that be a wonderful future 🙄

It was 30 degrees when we went last October, although the two days before we arrived they had torrential rain. We went back in march and definitely needed a jacket at night.
Look at AlexinMalta on youtube and I really dont remember it being cold in the evening.

RampantIvy · 13/10/2025 09:01

I would also take something in case it rains. The Med often gets most of its rain in autumn.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 14/10/2025 18:10

This might make the fashion police cringe but I always pack a pair of leggings so I can pop under a dress if it’s a bit chilly. I would have thought you would definitely need a cardigan and possibly a jacket in the evening . And yes, do pack a waterproof and umbrella. Do check the forecast a couple of days before you travel as the Mediterranean area can be very unpredictable at this time of year .

TheSmallAssassin · 14/10/2025 18:42

Bring a umbrella! We weren't expecting it to rain this week but it chucked it down yesterday (so much so the streets were flooded in Sliema and the stepped streets in Valetta turned into waterfalls!).

Seeingadistance · 14/10/2025 18:48

I was there a couple of weeks ago, and have previously been in September and October. It was very hot during the day and pleasantly warm in the evenings. But, as pps have already said, there was heavy rain and thunderstorms - which seem to be quite usual for that time of year. So, less need to keep warm and more need to keep dry!

Have a lovely time!

My friends have just come back from Defected Malta and said it was warm and windy during day and a bit chilly at night

Was Malta once a Russian Spy or what?

inamo · 14/10/2025 18:59

Just to add, once the Summer is over I never use dresses abroad. I'm talking about Late September to mid April time. It's trousers all the way, a couple of warm ones and a couple of light ones. Fleece or lined rain jacket and socks, cardigan a must. Peel off and pull on the layers as the weather dictates.

I like dresses, but I find them impractical off season TBH. Legs get too cold at night, and the light trousers do me fine during the day if it's warm.

Douchey · 14/10/2025 19:29

I lived there till recently. Take a rain coat, rain is common in October, and theyre getting a lot the last couple of weeks. A jacket or cardigan for evenings but you won't need anything heavy, lighter layers would be ideal.

Sorry to derail the thread and do ignore if you prefer but what was the weather like at the end of February usually? I hate February half term and we never go away for it, I was thinking we might try to get some moderate sun and a change of scene this year coming….

Seeingadistance · 15/10/2025 08:54

I don’t know about Malta in February but if you’re looking for sun and heat in February you could consider Lanzarote.

It's a reasonable answer though. I've been to Malta in October and it was hot hot. Didn't need any layers at any time of the day. We are going next week and it looksa bit cooler and possibly some rain because I've looked at the weather forecast.

Nobody's experience of the place in October in any other year is more helpful than actual weather forecasts.

We are going as a family of four with one checked 23kg bag for a week. 1-2 jumpers each in top of usual summer clothes and a raincoat each. Based on BBC Weather app.

bookmarket · 15/10/2025 11:47

Sure - I understand your point. And of course I will Google the weather forecast a day before we leave. But I've been to Seville and Lanzarote in Easter holidays when the weather app says 25 degrees and what we got was hotter than that in the middle of the day. The day started off chilly - comfortable in jeans - and between midday and 6pm was baking hot and summer clothes were most comfortable. After that a dress with a cardigan worked well. I've been to Malaga in October and it was warm enough to lie on the beach in a swimsuit and swim in the sea but it wasn't so hot you would sweat to death if you were in a pair of trousers.

I'm trying to pack so minimally and to work out if I need mostly warm weather attire with some layers for cold or more autumnal clothes with one or two summer pieces? (Wishing I were a man who can throw in one pair of shorts and one jumper alongside jeans and t-shirts and all bases are covered!)

TeamGeriatric · 15/10/2025 12:03

We went Easter time, it was late March and based on the photos we are all wearing jumpers in the evening. We have kids, we are not fancy, so we are in north face hoodie like attire. Some others have a light jacket on. I would expect similar in the evening in late October, particularly if dining outside. I remember being sat on the stairs eating pizza at San Paolo Naufrago in Valetta and feeling almost cold. During the day it was surprisingly warm if a bit windy.

WhatsitWiggle · 15/10/2025 12:12

I flew back from Malta on Monday. Last week was lovely, 26C during the day, warm enough to sunbathe. Wore skirts with a light cardi in the evening. Sunday the weather turned, needed light trousers and tshirt during the day and just avoided the rain!

DappledThings · 15/10/2025 12:48

That's about all I'll be taking! Will travel in jeans and a jumper. Pack 1 more jumper, 2 pairs of shorts, one dress and sandals. Plus swimming gear and a light raincoat.

February is actually the coldest month... nothing compared to England, maybe around 12 and damp. The kind of cold that gets to your bones! That being said. I wouldn't wear a thick quilted/padded coat, a mid-weight coat and a light scarf. Thick scarf and hat not required. Definitely trousers/jeans as opposed to bare legs x
