German Town mini break

Can anyone recommend a cute German town for a mini break with decent pubs for beer and a historic vibe

I’m sure there is a gorgeous medieval university town

Im Thinking York in Germany.

For a January cold weather trip and within in an hour of an airport. We are a middle aged couple so not after a boozy stag do type vibe but just love decent beer and sitting in good interesting pubs.

Heidelberg sounds like it would fit the bill.

OverlyFragrant · 20/09/2025 18:43

Boppard
Erfurt
Trier

Mumsntfan1 · 20/09/2025 18:45

Heidelberg or Nürnberg

MinnieMountain · 20/09/2025 18:45

Or Baden-Baden.

Bits of Mulheim are lovely, especially down by the river. Only 30-40 minutes for Dusseldorf. Personally, I’d always go to Munich, hands down my fave German city.

LueneburgIsLovely · 20/09/2025 18:49

Lueneburg, you can fly into Hamburg. Lovely university market town with cafes, old pubs, good food.

MinnieMountain · 20/09/2025 18:52

Also Ulm.

twilightcafe · 20/09/2025 18:56

Nuremberg

cinnamonbunlover · 20/09/2025 19:14

Oh wow thanks that’s a lot to keep me busy this evening!

Limburg, easy to get to from Frankfurt.

Hairyfairy01 · 20/09/2025 20:00

Heidelberg

As a veteran of exactly the type of German mini break you’re describing, I heartily recommend Regensburg.

Ginandbareit · 20/09/2025 20:07

I recommend Dresden, historic buildings, on the banks of the Elbe for boat trips and great bars and restaurants

OhNoFloyd · 20/09/2025 20:10

Second Dresden. Easily one of the most incredible places in Europe.

WhineAndWine1 · 20/09/2025 20:15

I really loved Düsseldorf it’s a mix of modern an old.

SpottyAardvark · 20/09/2025 20:20

Nuremberg is lovely with lots of fascinating Nazi era history to explore & learn about if that’s your thing.

Erding, near Munich airport, is smaller & quieter but absolutely idyllic. It’s also home to the largest spa & water park in the world.

Oh I loved Boppard. May have to revisit

CountryQueen · 20/09/2025 20:34

Rudesheim would be another good choice

Ididntmeantoyou · 20/09/2025 21:39

Königswinter or Garmisch-Partenkirchen. They are both hiking towns but really beautiful. I also second Ulm and Erfurt.

LustigLustig · 20/09/2025 21:46

I agree with all the above!

If you like the idea of somewhere a little smaller, I recommend Marburg or Landsberg am Lech.

OnlyFrench · 20/09/2025 21:46

Nuremberg is lovely, also Freiburg and Baden Baden, but I don’t know if there’s enough to keep you busy in the last two.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 21/09/2025 05:59

Heidelberg jumped to mind for me

lightslittle · 21/09/2025 06:53

Rothenburg

ormiwtbte · 21/09/2025 07:02

Regensburg is lovely, as is Ulm.
Bad Reichenhall is very nice as is Mittenwald if you want a bit of Alpine flair. Reichenhall also has a spa.
I liked Nuremburg as well.

All of those can be reached easily by train from Munich.

cinnamonbunlover · 21/09/2025 08:50

We decided on Nuremberg!! The Nazi history will be fascinating and we can fly direct from our local airport via schipol in a couple of hours.

@CountryQueen

I spent a day in Rudesheim a many years ago in a Rhine cruise. Loved it! Exactly the vibe.
