Hi,

Dp and I have booked a long weekend in Krakow for November. Really looking forward to it, does anybody have any recs of things we must do or places we must try for food and drinks?

We are doing Auschwitz and the salt mines in one day. I’m also planning on visiting Schindler's museum.

Tia

Auschwitz and the salt mines on the same day will be quite difficult to do? Auschwitz is a fair drive away

FionnulaTheCooler · 13/09/2025 17:32

Cytat cafe for breakfast, I had the best hot chocolate I've ever tasted in there.

dontforgetme · 13/09/2025 17:35

@Lastqueenofscotland2 its an 11 hour guided tour of both sites that we are looking at booking.

@FionnulaTheCooler funnily enough I have been recommended this place by a friend. It’s definitely on the list for breakfast! Looks a really cool place and food looks delicious.

The Castle is really good, St Mary’s Basilica has an amazing altarpiece. It’s a lovely city to walk around and just discover things. We found a museum of pinball machines and had a fun hour playing those. There is a restaurant called Czarna Kaczka - if you like roast duck it is a speciality.

bumblebee1000 · 13/09/2025 17:55

Kazimierz old town and jewish area is nice but avoid the fake over priced yiddish places...if time take a train to wroclaw, its krakow without the tourists...my fave place, lots of rivers, parks, old building over the bridge. untouched and you can eat at the university for very little.

rattytattynightmare · 13/09/2025 17:55

We did a fab tour of the old communist district in a Trebant.

dontforgetme · 13/09/2025 18:02

Amazing, thank you all!

The pinball museum sounds fun.

Just Trip Advisor’d Czarna Kaczka and wow 🤤

Theres a truly dreadful waxworks museum 😅 worth it after a few drinks.
We ate at a fab restaurant in the Jewish quarter...Hamsa. rooftop bar at Rubenstein Hotel ( as in Helena)

TheOGOC · 13/09/2025 18:07

Another vote for the Trabant tour. And try and do separate tours for Auschwitz and the salt mines. It’ll be too overwhelming to do both in one day and you won’t do either justice.

Mumofteensandcats · 13/09/2025 18:10

We split Autswitz and Salt Mines into 2 different days as it's about a 12 hr day trip. There is a museum under the main square called Rynek underground museum which is the remains of a city-that was good also-enjoy it!

The wax museum is so bad it's good!

We did Auschwitz and the salt mines in one day too, and I'm glad I did it that way rather than eat up two days. Schindler's museum was fascinating, but pre-book as queuing up on the day is very long. We stayed in Kazimierz and I loved it there.

dontforgetme · 13/09/2025 18:27

@CitizenZ this is my thinking. We’re only there for 2 full days really so want to make the most of them. Plus I know I will be feeling way too emotional after visiting Auschwitz to properly enjoy a good meal and few drinks out. This is the first break child free we are having since June 2022!

I’ve seen pictures of the wax museum online and think we would have a right laugh!

Thanks all for the recommendations.

We did them both on the one day and it was a long, and emotional day, but I'd still do them together if only over there for a relatively short break, or they will both use up a whole day each.

Krakow is such a beautiful place to just wander around, in truth. There are so many churches, basilicas and synagogues you can go in to - spectacular, 'showy' basilicas to plain, peaceful synagogues.
The castle is worth a wander round.

The main square is beautiful with lots of affordable places to eat.
You can walk around the Jewish Quarter and see all the history there too.

BG2015 · 13/09/2025 18:38

Following with interest. We're going to Krakow too at the end of October. We've booked the Auschwitz and salt mines tours in one day too as otherwise we will run out of time. We have also booked a walking guided tour of the Jewish quarter too with a company called Walktaive! it's free but you just make a donation of what you think the tour should be worth at the end.

We're going to do the castle and Schindlers museum.

We just need to investigate some restaurants too. There are lots of videos on YouTube of people who have done tours which we have found useful.

Mikart · 13/09/2025 18:56

We are going back for the 3rd time. Love the place

Willowskyblue · 13/09/2025 19:11

We did a walking tour of the old city and then a separate one of the Jewish Ghetto area. Both were brilliant and arranged through Walkative.

We didn't go inside the castle, as the exterior was covered in the walking tour, but did go to Schindlers Factory.

We stayed in Kazimierz and it was a great location - some amazing restaurants and bars.

Salt mines was great. We didn't get to go to Auschwitz as it was a holiday weekend and there were no tickets available.

Fastingandhungry · 13/09/2025 19:22

The free walking tours were great ! (You tip) and the Banksy museum is worth a visit.

Tragicmun · 13/09/2025 19:17

We visited this museum https://www.introducingkrakow.com/pomorska-gestapo-headquarters . Absolutely fascinating.

Oh yes this also.

Maddy70 · 13/09/2025 19:23

We did a walking tour of the Jewish area fascinating

40coats · 13/09/2025 19:26

We also did Salt mines and Auschwitz on the same day and would recommend it. The Salt mines were a nice reprieve after the concentration camp and a better use of time than splitting it over two days.
We did a walking tour with walkative who were excellent. We also used them for schindlers and felt it enhanced the experience.

We ate in Sioux just off the main square a couple of times and have recommended it to others who also loved it.

I wouldn't head to worclaw or anywhere else there's plenty to do in krakow. We've been twice and would love to go back. Worclaw was lovely for the Christmas market and a nice relaxed spot but we felt we seen enough in one trip.

We did an organised tour and did both which included Birkenau too. Was 9am-8pm all in.
