…please share what you did, wherever you went. Having spoken to friends and colleagues, no one seems to have had their best time this year (although most of us have had the ‘pleasure’ of taking grumpy teens bringing down the mood!). Not to everyone’s tastes, but our best family holiday so far has been to Florida, visiting Universal Studios and Disney - it was such good fun.

Sorry to hear about your child with the fear of flying. We don’t fly either, but for different reasons - we have a lot of food allergies in the family so tend to load up the car and take provisions with us. But we’ve had great holidays by ferry in Jersey, Ireland (we did the Irish CenterParcs as Irish school holidays were different from UK) and the Isle of Wight. We’ve also done a couple of cruises from Southampton to France and Norway. Plenty of fun to be had without an aeroplane x

Also to add - Disney have a cruise line that sails out of Southampton. And obviously there’s Disneyland Paris as well that is accessible via train or ferry

We went to Malaysia, Borneo and Singapore. Was an amazing holiday.

flowerpaper · 31/08/2025 21:43

Combination of Airbnb/Camping in the alps: Switzerland, Northern Italy, Haute Savoie France.

The caveat: I mostly travelled with one 9 year old girl. The uni aged older kids only dipped in as they interrailed. They joined at their choosing and were grateful when we paid. DH dipped in and out.

So, it was a good year developmentally. I cherish it as I know the DD will soon find my company less ideal.

Didn't go anywhere but finally had my knee replacement. So relieved to no longer be in pain, lack of holiday is no problem!

stargirl1701 · 31/08/2025 21:49

We did a week in London. It was fab. We travelled by train and stayed at the Park Plaza on Westminster Bridge.

Heckthewhat · 31/08/2025 22:07

Our best holiday was our honeymoon island hopping in Greece. Athens/Paros/Santorini. Absolute perfection.

Sigh - all before toddler DD came along. This year was an all inclusive in Tenerife and whilst still lovely, not as lovely as Greece.

Philandbill · 31/08/2025 22:11

We had a week in Austria with DD who is mid A levels. Vienna for the first part of the week, lots of art and some history, and then Salzburg for the second half of the week. Loved both.

paddlinglikecrazy · 31/08/2025 22:21

We did an America road trip Seattle to LA with lots of stops in the middle. It was fantastic.

JungAtHeart · 31/08/2025 22:36

I went to NYC for a fortnight with my two teen DDs. I lived there for a long time & they really love it. We did a house exchange with a lovely lady. We sailed back on the QM2. Brooklyn to Southampton. Seven days at sea. I absolutely loved it!!! And it was so reasonably priced.

scandinavianyellow · 31/08/2025 22:42

Place marking. We are looking for inspo for next year

RedSoloCup · 31/08/2025 23:09

Ten nights in Corfu with 3 teenagers 14, 18, 19 and was great 😊 obviously it had its moments but generally all good, we had a BAD holiday with them 2021 but it’s a pleasure to holiday with them now.

We've had our annual week in the Lake District with family. We played games, went on hikes and visited lots of different little villages. We also did the obligatory boat ride (this year in a row boat). The 13 mile hike just about finished me off, but our son year old handled it like a pro.

We had a week in Sorrento with the other side of our family. We visited pompeii and Herculaneum and climbed vesuvius, toured the amafi coast, got the train to Naples for pizza. Then we did a pizza making class. I love to do a cooking class wherever we go.

Our 8 year old had a blast. He learned some basic Italian, such as how to order his food and wish people a good day, etc.

Also trying to get back to Bath towards Christmas (we went last summer and loved it) - I would really love to try glass blowing a Christmas bauble!

We actually stayed at home and did local days out as if we were on holiday. I bought new soft towels, lovely luxury toiletries, wore our holiday clothes, had a cleaner for the week! We all slept so well, we rested and saved ££££! The weather massively helped.

Love this so much :)

LIttleMissTickles · 01/09/2025 05:54

@WFHforevermore very sorry to hear about your SCA. I had one out of the blue years ago, it’s quite something to wrap you head around. I hope you’re doing ok and not expecting too much of yourself! It can take a year or more to be back to yourself. I’m sending you best get well wishes.

No, we went to Florida a couple of years ago. This year was a week spent in Greece. It was a lovely villa and we had gorgeous sunshine (and I feel lucky we were able to go on holiday) but it would definitely have been better without teenage strops! I’m looking for inspiration for future trips. Actually, some really wonderful holidays have been spent in cottages in this country, particularly Derbyshire and Yorkshire.

I found cruises and stay holidays worked well with my teens. They felt like two holidays with just one day of travelling.
On the cruise we’d either all pick one excursion each or we’d decide on them altogether. Then we’d spend a week at an all inclusive hotel, chilling. My sporty DC would do all the animation and my DC would find a hammock or quiet spot and read, read, read. At this hotel we’d just do a couple of excursions/days out as we’d done so much the week before on the cruise.
I found have a twin centre holiday took the pressure of either half to be perfect and meet all our needs and wants.

Firethehorse · 01/09/2025 09:59

Just 4 days in Singapore but it was magic. We revisited some old favourite activities/sites/restaurants and found lots of new things too. DC’s choice so everyone was super happy and made the most of the time. So clean and safe and wonderful food.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 01/09/2025 10:18

A week in Cape Verde. Apart from a walk out to Santa Maria and a morning at the water park in the hotel next door but one to us. We spent the week lazing round the pool or the beach, had a nice massage and some time in the jacuzzi. To most people it probably sounds boring but after battling with severe depression since last October and being suicidal back in February, it was the holiday I needed

Finnba · 01/09/2025 12:18

@NeedthatFridayfeeling We flew into Denver and spent a day visiting the city/shopping. Then we drove up to Rapid City and stayed there a couple of days while we visited Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and Badlands. Then we drove over to Yellowstone for a few days, then on to the Grand Tetons for a couple of days and then finally a couple of days in Estes Park visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park before heading back to Denver. There was lots of driving and I spent far too much in Barnes and Noble and Ariat! Was fab though.

Oh me too! My 11 yr old DD refuses to fly and I really would love to go away. We are trying Eurostar to Amsterdam at the end of September but it’s not quite the same. And that took some persuading! She has never been abroad so at least we can do that. I feel for you!

Planned right you can get to anywhere in Europe and all the way down through Turkey into Syria (although wouldn’t suggest it!)
by car… Less time relaxing in one place but also some amazing journeys!! A way around the flying issue! We always drove as a family when we were young as Dad loved the driving and went all over!

Musicaltheatremum · 01/09/2025 13:25

We went on safari to Zambia and Malawi (well Malawi was a relaxing break) it was amazing. It was partly a walking safari.

Also went to Jersey for a week which was very interesting.
