Cancelling holiday due to broken bone

Hi has anyone claimed on their Jet 2 insurance (AXA) for a broken bone whereby you’ve had to cancel your holiday?

Youngest child has broken his arm has a full arm cast on which just isn’t ideal for a swimming pool water park type of holiday when he’s only little and doesn’t fully understand.

Please could you let me know your experiences. Thank you from a stressed mumma 😩

Maybe worth trying one of these?

itsallabitofamystery · 16/08/2025 08:54

I’d certainly try with AXA, you still have a week. I wasn’t comfortable at all with a full cast on. I tried to cancel but they were dragging their feet, and I had kids who wanted to go. But as a kid, it wouldn’t have been much fun in a cast.

You should be able to see his A&E attendance by now on the NHS app. If it’s on there, it’s on the spine so the GP will be able to pull it through. Keep on at the practice too.

Hope you get sorted.

You can buy a Limbo cover to pop over his cast, they are completely waterproof and work perfectly, my accident prone son used one to carry on swimming when he broke his wrist (repeatedly)

helpfulperson · 16/08/2025 09:11

How old is your other son? It is a big thing to cancel his summer holiday. Are you sure you can't just go and make the best of it.

protectthesmallones · 16/08/2025 09:24

If you are flying and it’s recently broken bone you may find he’s not fit to fly. Check with the clinic that fitted his cast and explain your issues. The doctor who saw him can advise if he’s safe. If he’s not then they will state this and you can claim. If he is then you can’t claim. It’s down to him being medically fit to fly and not because he’ll be sad on the holiday.

You may find axa are sympathetic - we were due to travel to France by car earlier this year but unfortunately I was in hospital for a week seriously ill for a week about 3 weeks before our departure date. I was technically fit to travel as going by car but not fully recovered enough to enjoy it without fear of a repeat episode of the illness (ongoing illness so in & out of hosp).
We completed Axa forms & sent copies of ambulance documentation , A&E & ward discharge letters (available on NHS app & your GP surgery should have access to them) & we received a full refund. Good luck 🤞

Thank you everyone. We now have a print out of their trauma clinic letter from the GP as well as a zoom doc medical certificate where they advised us and confirmed we should not travel (GP isn’t sure whether they can fill the forms out as it’s not what they usually do even for a fee).

Has anyone used ZoomDoc before?

They won’t give one until September as that’s when they are seeing them next. This is 10 days after the holiday. They were seen in A&E then the trauma clinic - neither give paperwork.

I’m a consultant . There definitely will be paperwork. Every ED attendance has discharge paperwork that is sent to your GP practice electronically and every clinic attendance has a letter . It may be on the NHS app
If you telephone the orthopaedic and trauma secretaries , they can send you a copy of the paperwork. Or phone your GP practice.

Sorry cross posted !

They have just avoided surgery by the minimal margins so I don’t think they allow any changes.

Okay but the reason I say this as this cast can get wet. It isn’t to do with the injury but rather how the cast can get wet which would be better for holiday and means he could still go in the pool.

Thank you! Yes I know there will be paperwork I just don’t have anything other than a print out of the trauma clinic letter which we got from the GP. I have checked the NHS app as he has linked profile to mine as he’s only 6 and I cannot see any letters. The only thing I can do is order repeat prescriptions.

The GP has said they do not fill out forms even for a fee but would have look in this instance. We were advised to use ZoomDoc and back it up with the trauma letter.

Yes can't you do this OP?

then no one misses out. The other kids shouldn't miss out. If it was a broken leg I would agree with you but surely you can all go and make the most of it? There's more to an abroad holiday and travel than a pool.

those covers are great. My brother used them many a time.

it sounds like you don't really want to go?

GCAcademic · 17/08/2025 10:59

AXA are utter cunts, the worst company I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Check out their reviews on Trustpilot. I always doublecheck now that the insurance I take out is not underwritten by them. I had to make a claim this year with another travel insurance company and the difference with the AXA bastards was like night and day.

I absolutely do want to go the issue being our family make up isn’t that of a family who have no other health conditions. One of our other children have care needs which at times make it extremely difficult - this is also us not saying we don’t want to parent but our time can be taken up. The holiday we are going on was 100% about pools, slides and the beach. That’s why we booked the hotel with nothing else around. Our children do not want to go shopping, to zoo or wherever else. I do understand people like exploring holiday destinations but for us this holiday wasn’t that.

Unfortunately the other plaster is a no go due to the type of break and how the plaster needs to be put on.

I only realised this after we had contacted them 😩 and I’m absolutely devastated at the reviews. We have submitted everything they’ve asked so it’s a wait and see but they have already came back asking for info that we have said we cannot get and have an alternative that was initially agreed by them.

UPDATE! The insurance company accepted our claim and we will be receiving a full refund minus any excess. So this just shows you can claim for a broken arm.
