Cancelling holiday due to broken bone

SandySmilesMum · 15/08/2025 21:34

Hi has anyone claimed on their Jet 2 insurance (AXA) for a broken bone whereby you’ve had to cancel your holiday?

Youngest child has broken his arm has a full arm cast on which just isn’t ideal for a swimming pool water park type of holiday when he’s only little and doesn’t fully understand.

Please could you let me know your experiences. Thank you from a stressed mumma 😩

If he's fit to fly I don't think the insurance would pay out.
would be such a shame for everyone to miss out. Yes he may not be able to get his cast wet but is it really worth him and the others missing out? The other children now have to miss out too.

I don't think the insurance would pay out unless he's a safety risk or he's not fit to fly. Give it a try but I don't think they will.

FakeMews · 15/08/2025 21:42

Any insurance company would ask for medical evidence that he's not fit to travel, which, unfortunately he probably is.

The problem we have is he’s restricted on what he can do because of his cast and then keeping him safe. He is also not discarded from the trauma clinic and needs a follow up in 3 weeks. The hotel is a water park hotel so other than being able to go in the pool he cannot go on any slides which for a 6 year old is going to be so hard to watch when he sees his sister being able to do all of it.

Approach the fracture clinic and ask if he is fit to fly. Unfortunately if he is then your insurance won’t help because he will miss out on the water slides.

We’ve already asked and they said they would only be able to issue something at his check up appt in September which is after the holiday date 😩 tbh we haven’t had a good experience with the hospital. We still don’t even have any paperwork of what they’ve done and it happened over a week ago.

No they won’t pay out unless the doctor provides a certificate to say he isn’t fit to fly…which sadly I don’t think you will get. I had pins, plates and a cast up to my armpit and was fit to fly. I did buy a rather funny looking waterproof cover for my arm which meant I could go in the water but admittedly, it wasn’t the holiday I was looking forward to.

Overthebow · 15/08/2025 21:53

Sorry unless you can get the doctors to say he’s not fit to fly it’s very unlikely insurance will pay out. They definitely won’t pay because it may be boring for your DS. Could you look at other things to do in the area your going like excursions or any wildlife parks which you could do a few days of to break up the trip for him and so he can do something fun too?

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 15/08/2025 21:56

AXA loves its forms, get the doctor certification form from them, take it to the GP who can fill it out, the GP may charge you a fee to do this.

I appreciate the posters are saying you need to be “fit to fly” but it isn’t just that but also whether the person needs continuing medical care that prevents them from being abroad for the dates of the booked holiday. Follow up appts at a fracture clinic count.

itsallabitofamystery · 15/08/2025 21:57

You could consider switching hotels? jet2 are usually good with that kind of thing. Maybe a place with more entertainment/clubs rather than slides?

SandySmilesMum · 15/08/2025 21:57

They won’t give one until September as that’s when they are seeing them next. This is 10 days after the holiday. They were seen in A&E then the trauma clinic - neither give paperwork.

Thank you. It’s not just about the pools/slides and them not enjoying the holiday. It’s also the case like you say that he’s still under the fracture clinic and their care is ongoing. As much as u would stop them hurting themselves they are also a child and accidents happens (like this one). We spoke to the GP today but they’ve haven’t had anything to do with their care so they were going to discuss filling it out.

You should no show for the flight.
You don’t have to put a claim in with all the documents prior to when the holiday starts.
You have time to submit a claim after no showing at the airport.

Unfortunately where we are going it’s basically beach, pools and not much else around unless you want to go to the local shops or hiking.

We have one so they can shower but he is so restricted because of the cast this makes it worse. They are also complaining it’s heavy and we’d worry about them swimming. Wouldn’t be left alone but still.

The GP can get copies of everything or access to the records from A&E so they can fill out the form.

I no showed a Jet2 holiday to Spain due to a chronic health condition that flared up. My GP filled the form even though my condition was under consultant care for reasons similar to yours. My claim was fully paid, holiday fully refunded minus the admin fee they charge.

An appt in September only ten days after the end of the holiday actually should be ok. Check the policy to see how long you have to submit a claim. They can certainly write that your DS was not medically able to go abroad from such and such date due to being under the care of the fracture clinic. If you can talk to a nurse or the GP and get verbal advice to not travel before you no show that helps but isn’t necessary (I talked to my GP the day after no showing).

Most travel insurance would rather you not travel than go ahead with a health condition that they would have to cover the medical bills if it worsened or you needed follow-ups. Refunding a holiday is usually cheaper than hospital bills.

SandySmilesMum · 15/08/2025 22:06

Thank you. I would honestly love to go but there are so many ifs and then the ongoing care. It’s a lot isn’t it. Thankfully our oldest understands as they are a lot older. It’s just an awful situation.

Can he get a fibreglass cast which is water resistant?

They have just avoided surgery by the minimal margins so I don’t think they allow any changes.

A week before we were due to fly to Spain ds who wasn't yet 2 broke his leg. I reported it to.Jet2 straight away they sent forms that had to be completed by the fracture clinic within a certain period and we got a full refund. Also my in-laws were booked on the same holiday booked separately got a full refund Also. It would have been a complete nightmare with water sand etc. Fit to fly my backside.

Ciderwine · 15/08/2025 22:28

I should mention my insurance was not with Axa via Jet2 it was booked separately through an insurance broker

Ours is Jet 2/axa so this is good to hear. Jet 2 wouldn’t deal with it so we’ve been dealing with axa. We’ve given them info, forms and they’ve asked for further so have submitted that also.
