If not the US…

Oct half term we were planning to visit Boston, but with things as they are in the US 🤷‍♀️

Any suggestions for somewhere else, have done a lot of European cities and were really looking forward to seeing Boston in the fall. Don’t want beach type holiday.

Canada? I've never been so I can't advise on anywhere but I know there is a lot to do.

cherrypiesally · 15/08/2025 07:19

Canada— Toronto is fabulous and you could drive north to Algonquin park; it’s beautiful.

Rocknrollstar · 15/08/2025 08:10

Vancouver was nicer than Toronto we thought. Have to say that we loved Boston and went twice.

Venalopolos · 15/08/2025 08:11

Honestly, I’d still do Boston. We did Boston and Maine last autumn and it was incredible. We’re going back to the US in September too.

Paaseitjes · 15/08/2025 08:12

Tokyo or Kyoto? You'll get all the Japanese acers in colour

Amby99 · 15/08/2025 08:18

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the US. We went to Wyoming, Montana and Utah in July and we had a delightful time. My parents and in laws were all scared ‘given the climate in the US’ but honestly I love America. It’s so vast and you go for miles without seeing anyone.

montana is obviously very different to Boston but if you’re looking for scenic views then I’d defo recommend.

reluctantbrit · 15/08/2025 08:20

Quebec or Montreal would be my choice.

Clearinguptheclutter · 15/08/2025 08:24

I’d still go to Boston. We have relatives there and they are horrified by the trump shit show as is everyone they know.

I’d give red states a wide berth

cheezncrackers · 15/08/2025 08:36

We're going to the US in Oct, as we often do. Oct is a lovely time to visit the NE - the perfect time actually as the weather is nearly always settled and bright and the fall colours are stunning. What are you worried about exactly?

Tootingbec · 15/08/2025 08:43

Is it a safety thing or ethical thing for not wanting to go to Boston?

If safety then you have nothing to worry about in Boston - over and above being alert to petty theft like you would in any city. Was there in March and it was all very pleasant! Was also in Utah and Texas this year and again all normal - the streets are not over run with MAGA hatted loons!

But if ethical reasons then suggest Montreal or Quebec? Similar-ish vibes, beautiful autumn colours etc. Not too long a flight…

honeyandbutterontoast · 15/08/2025 08:50

My DD is the one with the worries really. She feels it’s morally wrong to go for the next 4 years and also she seems to find every “I was detained at the border” story there is!!

I’d still be going to the US if that was what you wanted.

However if fall vibes is what you wanted, Quebec is incredible in the fall! You could do Quebec/Montreal city combo as they are so different or one of the cities for a few days then a cabin out in the sticks to enjoy the views. It’s not mountainous like BC but plenty of forest and lakes and fall foliage is gorgeous.

May I ask why you’d give red states a wide berth? Whilst I am certainly no trump supporter, I do think that until you’ve visited a red state you can’t automatically assume it’s full of evil people (not that’s what I think you’re assuming). I was reluctant to go because of everything portrayed in the media but the vast majority of trump supporters are really, really nice people. They just want guns, legal immigration and less government intervention

Just genuinely curious because a few years ago I wouldn’t have gone to a red state either but my fiancé’s extended family are all southern and it really has changed my perspective

Overtheatlantic · 15/08/2025 09:48

There’s still blue people in red states. My family live in Florida and took my 3 year old niece to her first pride parade this year, in a largely agricultural town south of Orlando.

The Canadian side of Niagara is good - not by the falls but Niagara on the Lake is lovely. Ottawa is interesting as is Quebec.

I’m just back from Boston and Massachusetts coast and I was worried before we went but it was fine. Better than fine, it was fabulous. Encountered no Trumpiness. In fact Massachusetts is, I believe, the only 100% Democrat state in the USA.

Vancouver and Vancouver Island.Beautiful. One of my favourite holiday destinations .

Except that it’s on the West Coast of Canada.

NewYorkSummer · 15/08/2025 10:06

I was in New York a couple of months back, no issues at the border (and didn’t see anyone being dragged off either) and no issues while in the US. It felt exactly the same as it always has. I’d absolutely go and enjoy Boston, but if you really feel you can’t then I second either Toronto or Vancouver, both great places to visit.

pinotnow · 15/08/2025 11:59

I'm just back from NY, DC and Virginia and had an amazing time. Border staff at both airports were efficient and friendly, as was everyone else we encountered. DS1 got chatting to someone on the DC subway who said, 'Fuck Trump, I hope he dies a painful death(!)' and the receptionist at our NY hotel commented on our post-Brexit passports and said he knew how we felt as they have Trump.

I understand the ethical argument but the other way to look at it is there are a huge amount of good people who work in tourism, who didn't vote for Trump and who will be losing business as a result of people deciding not to visit (I understand numbers from Canada are hugely down, which is completely understandable). I'm glad we went - Trump doesn't represent everyone.

jeaux90 · 15/08/2025 16:53

Just back from the US and travel there a lot. There is no problem and I’d still go.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 15/08/2025 17:04

Also recommend Canada. We usually stick to Ontario where family are based but we're doing Niagara, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec in October. Can't wait to see the colours 🍁

reluctantbrit · 16/08/2025 11:06

It's not the people, I have no issues with lots of Americans. It's the unknown factor what crap they pull at immegration with no immediate reason.

Years ago we were questioned for a long time why we have German passports issued in the UK. We really got worried as DH never had this before in all the years he travelled frequently.

I just don't want to delete social media or look through my photo app in case I forgot to delete a meme as I follow several LGBTQ authors and groups and sometimes save something I like. DD is queer and especially with the current topic of requesting the supreme court to look into gay marriage, her SM is full of this and she has pride flag stickers on her devices.

We planned originally a US trip autumn 2026 but I am absolutely not going.

MojoJojo71 · 16/08/2025 11:09

I’d still go, my aunties are there at the moment and are having a fabulous time. Like you they were worried, particularly as a same sex couple, and were thinking of cancelling but it’s been wonderful. I’m so jealous of all the of photos they are posting on social media, it’s my favourite US city by far.

EyeLevelStick · 16/08/2025 11:47

October half term is a bit late for fall colours in Algonquin, and it won’t be warm by then. We’re off to Arizona in October and don’t have any concerns.
