Would you fly first class for £600

sangeetsandra · 08/08/2025 15:48

It’s £600 each on top of what we have currently paid for a prem econ flight. So £1200 for both of us.

It’s a 7 hour day flight to north America. It will be to celebrate becoming a GP.

It’s a lot of money for us right now - but what’s life without a little splurge?

How much is business class, it's really nice and wondering if it might be a bit less.

Simonjt · 08/08/2025 15:51

Which airline?

defrazzled · 08/08/2025 15:52

YES! I paid more than that economy at Eatser!

W0tnow · 08/08/2025 15:53

For a 7 hour day flight? No.

If it’s a celebration, splurge on a fancy restaurant when you get there.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/08/2025 15:53

Yes I would for a seven hour flight but I can afford it without a thought. If I were 30ish, didn't have an aching back but had an emptier bank account, I'd spend it on something useful or that I could keep forever, such as a new bed/lovely sofa or a picture.

MeAndMyGhost · 08/08/2025 15:56

Definitely! Even if you do it once. What a memory!

MsPug · 08/08/2025 15:57

Of course

upandleftthenright · 08/08/2025 15:57

Yes!!!!

Parker231 · 08/08/2025 15:57

Yes - we always do business (or 1st) for long haul paying in either cash or points. (I’ve enough points for our family to use for many years).

JDM625 · 08/08/2025 16:03

I've often flown long haul- 24hr +.

For me, I wouldn't waste it on a 7hr flight, but as someone else said I'd spend it something memorable once there.

I mean- prem economy is ok and in 5/10yrs will you remember a larger, 1st class seat, or an amazing meal/experience in America instead?

FriNightBlues · 08/08/2025 16:03

I have heard it said that if you can only afford first class once then don’t go first class!
(Presumably because all other flights will be horrible afterwards).
But for £600 each? Yeah, I’d do it.

Silverbirchleaf · 08/08/2025 16:05

The question is, can you afford it? You say ‘it’s a lot of money’ which makes me think it would be a stretch. Would you rather spend that money on the flight, or when you are there?

irregularegular · 08/08/2025 16:09

Personally, no, not if £600 is a significant amount of money to you.

£600 each for 7 hours of increased comfort rather than some amazing experience just doesn't seem worth it.

You could have a great European short break for £1200. Or a couple of nights in a really really luxurious UK hotel. Or a meal at one of the best restauraunts in the country (with change). Or tickets to 3 concerts to see some of your very favourite bands and/or Wimbledon centre court or similar.

If all of those are less appealing to you than an upgrade from premium economy to first class for 7 hours then you might go ahead. But I'd rather have any of the above.

Mumblechum0 · 08/08/2025 16:11

If it's actually first class, not business, then yes absolutely!

We flew first class (in a sort of private room) to Australia on Singapore airlines and it was fantastic. I would have been OK with business too.

bumbaloo · 08/08/2025 16:13

What class are you travelling? Economy and £600 takes you to first? Absolutely. Business and £600 takes you to first and £600 is a lot for you? No.
The difference between economy and business long haul is huge. Business to first to me is not so huge. But then I don’t eat on planes and I’m small so business long haul is big for me

MidnightPatrol · 08/08/2025 16:14

I would do this at this price.

First / business to the US can be crazy expensive, so this is quite a good deal really.

Congratulations on the job / qualifying.

theresnolimits · 08/08/2025 16:15

No. And I can afford it. It’s only 7 hours and that will fly by (excuse the pun). Premium Economy is fine.

Returning from Australia or the Far East, yes. Even returning from the US overnight so I could get some sleep. But not going out there.

Spend your £1200 upgrading your hotels - now that is a luxury that’s really worth it.

zaazaazoom · 08/08/2025 16:18

7 hours definitely not worth it. I would use that money to save for another holiday.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 08/08/2025 16:18

That’s incredibly cheap for first class
on a transatlantic flight. I wouldn’t think twice.

Dartmoorcheffy · 08/08/2025 16:20

If its virgin then premium economy is great and very comfortable. If you can easily afford the extra though then hell yes.

SpunkyPombear · 08/08/2025 16:20

What airline? I personally wouof hoteld it experiences

Chewbecca · 08/08/2025 16:21

Don't forget a lot of 7 hour flights often end up more like 6. And it's more useful on the return leg than outbound, if it is overnight.
There is a huge difference between PE and Business and a small difference between business and first. (On BA). Although our last few BA Club flights have been a bit rubbish, food service in particular where most selections have run out.

May I ask your secretary to accruing them?

We use a points based credit card for all spending - even a cup of coffee. Always pay the credit card off in full each month. Only fly long haul on airlines in the same group - same points system. The vast majority of our points are from my extensive travel for work.

EnidSpyton · 08/08/2025 16:32

If it's Virgin and a day flight to New York I honestly wouldn't bother if you're already in PE. I fly the route often and have only ever paid for First when I was flying back overnight, had to be on it for work the next day, and really needed to sleep. Otherwise I'm always in PE. The flight is so short (often only 6hrs in reality) and the service and comfort level in PE is excellent. You get plenty of drinks, snacks and food (most of which is the same as first class), the same toilets as first class, and the same personalised service. The PE seats are very comfy and spacious and for a flight of that length you really won't get your money's worth if you pay for First.

I only fly First now if it's a long night flight - 9 hours plus. And only if I have bid for an upgrade and got it cheaply. I consider it the equivalent of a night in a luxury hotel - and will pay what that would cost and no more.

For that money you could have a fabulous meal out, night at the theatre etc in New York - and that will be more memorable and enjoyable than a few hours in a slightly comfier seat on the plane.

Have a fab time and congrats on becoming a GP!
