Would you fly first class for £600

sangeetsandra · 08/08/2025 15:48

It’s £600 each on top of what we have currently paid for a prem econ flight. So £1200 for both of us.

It’s a 7 hour day flight to north America. It will be to celebrate becoming a GP.

It’s a lot of money for us right now - but what’s life without a little splurge?

OP posts:

Not for a 7 hour flight I wouldn’t. Treat yourself to a really special restaurant on your trip and it will still cost a fraction of the price.

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 08/08/2025 17:33

Yes without hesitation but we always fly in bus or first for anything over four hours.

Buttons0522 · 08/08/2025 17:40

If it’s a splurge but you can manage it, do it for sure. Virgin Upper Class from Heathrow was amazing. The personalised check in, the lounge… it was a brilliant experience before even boarding the plane. I didn’t pay for the upgrade, it was kindly gifted to me, I would never have been able to afford it ordinarily. It felt like a real once in a lifetime experience and I loved every minute.

Imagine you have £1200 to spend in New York or wherever it is you're going. Think of the wonderful meals out, the cocktails at Grand central, the cabs and all the dozens of little luxuries you could have during your visit to make it even more memorable. You're flying during the day, you'll be fine to get up and move around if you need to. You won't notice much difference between PE and Business or First. Is it really worth spending £150 ph just to sit in a slightly posher seat? The only times I've splashed out for Business I've ended up wishing I hadn't bothered.

YES! I paid more than that economy at Eatser!

Haha perfect description of that time of year 🤣

I would do this at this price.

First / business to the US can be crazy expensive, so this is quite a good deal really.

Congratulations on the job / qualifying.

Ha, I read GP as grand parent.

OP, if you are a GP (doctor) then yes, I would. You’re on a career trajectory where £600 is not a lot of money.

For me personally, no, £600 is a lot of money and I couldn’t afford it.

Silverbirchleaf · 08/08/2025 17:51

Me too, I presumed grandparent as well!

Vodkamartini3olives · 08/08/2025 17:55

Yes I would. Anything over 5 hours. Luckily my DH travels a lot for work and as a result we gets loads of FF points. I will never fly economy again unless it's an emergency. It's not just the flight it's check in,. security,. lounge everything about it makes it a smooth, enjoyable experience.

I thought GP meant grandparent and was a bit confused someone would take a holiday to celebrate their child having a baby 😄

I’m with the “what’s the opportunity cost?” crew - £1200 can either allow you to splurge on your stay or pay for a whole other weekend away.

If you are in a financially position that you do first class AND luxury stay AND mini breaks then do it. If it is OR then no, spend the money elsewhere.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 08/08/2025 18:00

Im amazed you can get it at that cost. Book it!

TicTac80 · 08/08/2025 18:11

If it was £600 all inc for the first class ticket, then hell yeah!

I don't think I'd splurge £600 per ticket on top of what I've already paid for premium economy though (not for a 7hr flight).

Blinky21 · 08/08/2025 18:15

Absolutely! That seems really cheap for first class, I've spent 4k on Business Class but it was a much longer flight. Not all first class and BC are equal, though so it would also depend on the airline

TheHandmaidsSnail · 08/08/2025 18:16

Not a chance for a 6 hour (thats usually all it is) day flight unless you are in a position where money doesnt matter. Totally not worth it.

Overnight flight anywhere, definitely yes.

RawBloomers · 08/08/2025 18:28

I would check which airline it was, but assuming BA or AA or someone - yes.

Mancity08 · 08/08/2025 18:31

If you can afford it, no problem
but for 7 hrs and you can’t really afford it
NO

notimagain · 08/08/2025 18:37

Well it's financially it's good deal but it might help to know the airline and aircraft.

Generally daylight, trans -Atlantic, 7 hours and it's almost a case of blink, or a couple of films, and you're there so probably not worth the extra.

Only exception is if it's First on an A380 then it might be a case considering it just for the heck of it.

PurBal · 08/08/2025 18:38

Yes

PersephoneSmith · 08/08/2025 18:40

Bargain! Absolutely

strawlight · 08/08/2025 18:41

No. I wouldn’t pay £100 an hour for a slightly comfier chair.

On a longer haul flight, yes I would.

healthybychristmas · 08/08/2025 20:38

if you fly with Virgin then the premium economy is fine. You could spend the rest on upgrading your hotel.

However, I do think you deserve a huge treat for becoming a GP. Congratulations!

PeonyBulb · 08/08/2025 20:57

I would because it’s cheap so yes go for it

Colourmylife1 · 08/08/2025 21:43

I couldn’t justify that difference for a 7 hour flight. I’d rather spend the money on great restaurants or upgrading my hotel room. For a fully flat bed on a longer overnight flight £600 would definitely be worth it to me
