Ryanair luggage allowance confusion

Hi. My daughter, 17, and I flying to Spain next week with Ryanair. I just checked our baggage allowance and am confused! Not flown Ryanair before but know they are tough if you get it wrong.

I thought we had the same 20kg allowance. But not according to the photos attached. I have 20kgs plus 10kgs! Daughter has 10kgs and not happy! Can we combine the two 10kgs? So she has 20kgs in one case same as me? Seems obvious will be fine but no idea! Any help / advice appreciated as Google has many different answers. Thank you

@Blueskydrink Just to say that 20kg is a pretty heavy bag. I deliberately don’t have a large bag because lifting it is too much. The size Ryanair quote could get really heavy if fully loaded! I’d also avoid 3 suitcases. 2 medium ones and a carry on bag that stacks on the handle is my preferred system now.

I just don’t like pressure on bag size that feels difficult to comply with but I nearly always use hold luggage unless it’s just a few days short haul.

You can pool the weight but not the bags. You’ve paid for one big case and 2 cabin sized bags . So you can’t take 2 big cases only 1.

The screenshot suggests they're all checked in bags. I agree that a 10kg and a 20kg is easily enough between two people so just take two suitcases. But check all this on the live chat.

Unfortunately, you can’t pool your allowances. Each Ryanair ticket comes with its own weight limit. Your daughter will either need to buy the same 20 kg checked‑bag option you have or upgrade to Priority, which gives her a 10 kg cabin bag (max 55 × 40 × 20 cm) plus a small personal item (40 × 20 × 25 cm). If you’d rather stick to just carry‑on, check out the Texar Cober 25 l Backpack (45 × 35 × 20 cm) or find a similar pack - since it fits Ryanair’s cabin rules perfectly. Just be sure each case stays under your daughter’s individual allowance when you check in!

... that's why I only ever take my 30l hiking backpack when travelling with them. With packing cubes I get 3-5 days worth of clothes and it fits neatly under the seat.

Anything else is either extortionately priced or very confusing!

WinniLoy · 27/07/2025 19:32

Totally get that. Ryanair’s strict rules can be tricky! A 30L hiking backpack sounds like a perfect sweet spot for space and convenience. I’d add that choosing durable, multi-functional gear really helps maximize what you can pack without going over the limit. For those looking for solid, travel-friendly options, military.eu has some great backpacks and accessories designed exactly with this kind of smart packing in mind.

Thanks for the info, that clears up the baggage allowance issue. Nice that there’s a pack like the Texar Cober that fits Ryanair’s rules perfectly — definitely worth considering to avoid surprises at the airport.

WinniLoy · 28/07/2025 14:52

Glad it helped! The Texar’s been a solid pick for us so far – fits neatly, no questions at the gate. Always feels like a win when you can breeze through boarding without repacking at the last minute. Do you usually go carry-on only, or mix it up depending on the trip?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 28/07/2025 15:35

How much do you need you take? I understand the disappointment of not using the matching bags but we are on holiday with 4 of us for a week and a half and took one 20kg bag and then each just had an under the seat bag so it sounds as though you have a huge amount of luggage.

They are a pain in the arse and it is easy to get confused because it asks you so many times what luggage you need you add so you could easily have clicked things multiple times and even up with the strange medley of suitcases you have.

That's a great summary! I second the Texar Cober - I've used it myself on Ryanair and had no issues at all. It fits perfectly under the seat and holds more than you'd expect. Just make sure not to overpack or stuff the outside pockets too much, especially if they’re checking closely at your gate.

My experience is that you can pool checked bag weight, with done it with Ryanair a few times. You can't have more weight or a larger number of bags than you booked altogether. We've flown before where we have one 20kg bag and 3 10kg checked cases and we checked in 2 x 20kg bags.

We're off to Scotland in 2 weeks with a 20kg and 4x 10kg bags allowance and i think we'll be checking 20, 20 and 10kg bags. We use the automated check in where you just weigh all your luggage together.

Bjorkdidit · 01/08/2025 02:27

You can pool your allowance, it says so on their website, despite what ChatGPT and its favourite brand of luggage thinks.

Blueskydrink · 18/08/2025 18:16

Just a quick update! We ended up taking two checked bags. One 9kgs and one 15kgs but the same type of bag if that makes sense. But at both airports the Ryanair staff said we could have pooled our allowance as we were on the same ticket. So PP was correct.

Be aware that Ryanair are talking about increasing the staff reward for pointing out an oversized overweight bag.

That's at the gate, where CFs try a variety of stuff to get oversized bags on board. OP's question is about checked bags, where you go to a desk before you go through security..

93tid · 24/09/2025 17:32

Dimensions for all checked baggage are 80 x 120 x 120cm regardless of weight booked.

TheTealPlayer · 11/12/2025 22:04

Does anyone know where you can get an 80x120x120cm bag? I've been looking online but cannot find any site selling one exactly that size

Bjorkdidit · 12/12/2025 03:40

Does anyone know why you'd want a bag that size and who you'd find to help you move it about, being approximately three times the volume of a washing machine and likely only suitable for low density materials, even clothes would be too heavy if totally full.
