Ryanair luggage allowance confusion

Blueskydrink · 22/07/2025 20:29

Hi. My daughter, 17, and I flying to Spain next week with Ryanair. I just checked our baggage allowance and am confused! Not flown Ryanair before but know they are tough if you get it wrong.

I thought we had the same 20kg allowance. But not according to the photos attached. I have 20kgs plus 10kgs! Daughter has 10kgs and not happy! Can we combine the two 10kgs? So she has 20kgs in one case same as me? Seems obvious will be fine but no idea! Any help / advice appreciated as Google has many different answers. Thank you

There might be different dimensions for 10kg to 20kg

Jeezitneverends · 22/07/2025 20:34

You’re unlikely to be able to combine them-Ryanair are a pain in the ass with their luggage . With self check in it it’s unlikely to “read” 2x10kg as 20 kg.
Your best bet is probably to go into your booking on the app and see what it “allows” you to do

Cedrabbage · 22/07/2025 20:37

I reckon computer will say 'no'. One 10kg bag each then share a 20kg bag?

AttilaTheMeerkat · 22/07/2025 20:46

No re combining. I would pay and go back online to increase her baggage allowance if she wants to take a heavier suitcase.

Blueskydrink · 22/07/2025 20:49

OK no combining. Seems harsh considering we have paid for 40kgs or 20kgs each and surely makes no difference to Ryanair how many bags it is in 🤔 I also bought us matching 20kg wheely cases as our first trip away together. Oh well.

Can you not change the luggage booked?

Can you not change the luggage booked?

I guess so but another 20kgs bag is £70 and that then gives us 60kgs of which combined we are likely to use 30kgs ish. Mad!

Oh bless you, you Ryanair newbie, thinking that anything with Ryanair and their baggage would be logical and straightforward!

You and your daughter will just have to share the bigger bag. You could use packing cubes to try and help you separate your things?

Munga · 22/07/2025 21:08

This is from the Ryanair website I don’t know if it’s relevant to your situation
Is bag pooling allowed?Yes. Bag pooling is allowed between passengers with check-in bags on the same flight reservation. This means that if you have 2 20kg Check-in Bags (40kg total) on your booking, one of those bags could weigh 15kg while the other weighs 25kg. However, no bag can weigh more than 32kg.

Olika · 22/07/2025 21:09

Just make sure you meet the size rules:

Going against other options, I did read that if you are on the same ticket you can use the allowance of one luggage to combine with the other. Say you 20 kg bad is actually weighing 30 kg, but your daughter has on her ticket a 10kg bag that’s fine.

Oh well that suggests we can "pool" our kgs! How confusing 😕....

Be aware that Ryanair are talking about increasing the staff reward for pointing out an oversized overweight bag.

Vanillalime · 22/07/2025 23:30

I was going to say the same as the poster above. Michael O’Leary recently said in an interview he was incentivising his staff to charge people for breaking the rules on luggage.

Are you on the same booking? I don’t think I’ve ever booked with someone on the same booking but we had different baggage allowances, so please double check before you get stung at the airport!

TizerorFizz · 22/07/2025 23:38

Or avoid using them! Who needs this hassle? Happy holidays!

SwedishEdith · 23/07/2025 00:02

I'm not sure what you've booked tbh. Options are usually the small hand luggage allowance plus 10kg cabin bags or hand luggage plus checked in bags. If the checked in, you choose 10kg or 20kg - size of case doesn't matter. Your screenshots suggest you have 10kg each to check in plus one of you has a 20kg check in bag as well. Am I reading that correctly?

Yes I think so! Although I'm starting to lose my mind...this was meant to be some much needed mum / daughter time away after a stressful time. No thanks to Ryanair 🤨

I have seen them stop a passenger or two on nearly every flight recently for trying to take onboard bags that were bigger than the allowance. But, each time, the bag was clearly oversized and the passenger was trying it on. Sometimes they've probably got away with it.

How long are you going for and how much do you really need to take? You've got 40kg between you but over three bags, by the look of it. You can still use your new cases but make sure one doesn't exceed 10kg and then have the other 10kg in another case. Bit of a pain having three cases though - if I'm reading it correctly. I assume whoever made the booking added the 10kg checked in bags and then, added the 20kg later in the booking process.

It'll be fine though. Once you've dropped the bags off, you will forget about this temporary angst. Don't let it spoil your holiday.

Bjorkdidit · 23/07/2025 04:57

So you've paid for 10 + 10 + 20 in 3 bags, but pooling allowances is allowed?

I'd ask Ryanair through livd chat if it's OK to take 2 x 20 kilo bags, but if not or it's unclear,I just stick to 10 + 20 as that's plenty for 2 people assuming its a beach/pool holiday and you're not taking hiking or watersports equipment or similar.

Deebee90 · 23/07/2025 05:20

You can pool the weight but not the bags. You’ve paid for one big case and 2 cabin sized bags . So you can’t take 2 big cases only 1.

itsgettingweird · 23/07/2025 05:25

Go onto live hat and ask them.

Then screen shot the answer as evidence.

once in a while I’d have said pooling would be fine but nowadays airlines make bag sizes a thing and charge you to breathe!

aPathologicalPeoplePleaser · 23/07/2025 05:32

You can pool checked baggage, we did it a couple of weeks ago. So for 2 adults and 1child: instead of 3x10kg plus a 20kg, we took 2x 25kg
bags cannot exceed 32kg due to baggage handling rules.
I confirmed all this with Ryanair customer services before flying and we had no issues at the airport

eurochick · 23/07/2025 07:23

We have also pooled check in baggage weight before. As long as you are on the same booking it is fine. I’ve also never seen the size checked for check in baggage. It’s cabin baggage they are anal about - I have seen that checked many times.
