Holiday credit/debit card

First non all inclusive holiday abroad for many years and fairly sure last time we just took all cash.

Do people have a travel credit/debit card to avoid fees or still just take cash? We will be in France if that makes any difference!

We have a Halifax Clarity credit card and I also have a Monzo card in case I need to withdraw a little cash. That said we hardly ever use cash - none at all in Iceland.

Flumpywoo · 14/07/2025 15:44

Chase debit card or Monzo both don’t charge fees, although some ATMs may charge their own fees, so check beforehand. I tend to take some cash in euros and pay for meals and in shops with my Chase card, so that I don’t need to withdraw cash while there. I usually go to Spain/Balearics where a lot of cash machines charge a fee now.

We use our nationwide debit and credit cards as the ones we have don't charge extra fees. We take a small amount of cash too

I bank with HSBC who do charge fees annoyingly for both spending and cash withdrawals. Has anyone used Revolut?

I have a HyperJar account/card that I use for spending abroad. It's free If you're going with partner/kids and you all get one you can share the same pot (jar) of money. It's free (they might charge a fee to load the card, but not sure) and the exchange rate is usually pretty good.

Notreallyme27 · 14/07/2025 15:57

I use Revolut on holiday. No transaction fees, decent exchange rates, and really easy to top up. I can keep track of spending easier when I top it up, and when you get your usual notification on your phone to tell you what you’ve spent, it also gives your current balance which I find really handy.

I use revolut, it was easy to set up and use.

Best to get cash here as many atms charge.

Moochine · 14/07/2025 16:46

A lot of places are live the uk now with contactless only payments. Especially in cities.

last holiday I went on I got all my currency on a post office travel card and didn’t take any cash.

chesschessandmorechess · 14/07/2025 16:51

@oneplustwoplustwoplusone The HSBC Global Money Account card does not charge fees. You can open a Global Money Account on the banking app. We use this card everytime we travel, and just transfer funds into the account from our main account using the app.

I have the Clarity card too, but for those who may be interested, don't want a credit card or can't get one, I also have a Currensea card as back up. It links to your current account, and you can use it like a debit card, bit without all the annoying fees etc. Basically, if there is money in your bank account it will debit your foreign purchase but in £s. If there is no money in the account it won't process the transaction. It can also be used at ATM's fee free.

I'm using revolut and I have used revolut both the physical card and on my phone in France without problems. I do carry a bit of cash with me just in case but just for emergencies or if I need to spend in markets, etc. I mainly used the card.

HSBC do a global money account which I used when I went to America. You set it up and you get a debit card.
The account then appears in your app and you just transfer the amount of money you want into that account you can convert it into the currency of your choice so you can look at the account and see you have $100 for US and €250 in euros for example.

i found it really easy as you just transfer across what you need.
Or you could just do a little at a time in case your card gets stolen.

thinkfast · 14/07/2025 18:01

I use Revolut. I think it’s great. I have a physical and virtual card.

Abbyant · 14/07/2025 18:17

We have Revolut which are prepay cards that can convert to any currency so you pay in that currency and avoid fees

TeamGeriatric · 14/07/2025 18:18

Also Halifax clarity credit card and Monzo for cash withdrawals, rarely need much cash though.

Doone22 · 14/07/2025 20:12

Get a currensea card just for this. It's the dogs bollox

OhamIreally · 14/07/2025 20:36

Halifax Clarity here as well. Put everything on it then pay it off as soon as I get back.

CeeJay81 · 14/07/2025 21:13

I use my Monzo abroad. If you need to withdraw cash they don't charge like many banks do. It's a also a good way to keep an eye on spending too, if you use online banking. I transfer whatever budget I have for the holiday and can keep an eye on how much has been spent.

angelcake20 · 14/07/2025 21:18

I have a Starling account for this. We take a bit of emergency cash but rarely need it.

Not read the whole thread yet but I love Revolut. Simple /transparent/really easy to user. In the last few weeks have used in France/Spain/Italy/and today in London on th e tube. Also has an instant access savings account paying decent interest for instant access. Now using instead of my own First Direct Bank account for day to day transactions and only unsung FD for DDs etc.

ilovesooty · 14/07/2025 21:25

I've got a Caxton prepaid card, a Starling debit card and a Virgin Money credit card. I take a bit of cash but rarely need to use it.

gemma19846 · 15/07/2025 13:43
