Long haul travel 4 nights

MinnieMoo25 · 08/06/2025 20:58

Hi all,

My husband and I impulsively booked a holiday last night to Bangkok for four nights and I’m beginning to get a bit worried that we’re not going for long enough.

Has anyone done such a long haul flight (15hrs) for such a short amount of time?

Holiday is non-refundable so we’ll just have to make it out, but would love for some reassurance!

Blimey! It takes the best part of a day to get there, the time differences mean you generally lose a good few hours on return and the jet lag can be horrendous! Good luck 🤞

MinnieMoo25 · 08/06/2025 21:01

Thank you. The four nights doesn’t include travel (we have a day either side for that). But yes, we saw a good deal and didn’t quite think it through!

Why??

how much OP? This sounds nuts

4 nights wow! Savour every minute, I say. Try and sleep as much as possible on the flight - eye mask and ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones help.

If you're feeling sleepy during the day while on holiday, have some coffee.

I've done lots of long haul travel but never gone away for such a short time.

Soontobe60 · 08/06/2025 21:04

What’s your flight itinerary?

peepsypops · 08/06/2025 21:04

Of course! Life is short - do it! Cabin crew here - we do much shorter and still get to see enough to make it worthwhile. Why wouldn’t you?

Strawpollplease · 08/06/2025 21:06

I’ve done 5 days in Australia a couple of times … I found it was fine when there but harder coming back to UK. Sounds brilliant to me!

MidnightPatrol · 08/06/2025 21:07

I travel these kinds of distances / trip lengths for work often, and it’s fine.

You just need to be conscious of jet lag and approach the flight focusing on rest. And maybe build in some crash out time on arrival!

If you’re staying in Bangkok it should be pretty easy though.

MinnieMoo25 · 08/06/2025 21:13

Day 1 - Manchester to Doha - Doha - Bangkok
Day2 - arrive in Bangkok 6am local time
Day 3 and 4 no travel
Day 5 BKK - Doha - Manchester (one day)

Wow that is a distance! Makes me feel a little bit better 😂 I have done Bangkok in 6 days before for work (15 years ago when I was much younger) and felt OK. I think I’m just having one of those ‘what have I done moments’.

I've done 3 days in Canada a couple of times now. It was fine when I was there but the jetlag kicked in on the return journey. I think it's worse going west to east?

Lalalalaland25 · 08/06/2025 21:20

I went to Australia for 4 nights for work, it was bonkers! Your trip is much nearer than that and will be fine, enjoy x

JumpingintoJune · 08/06/2025 21:26

Oh God no . It sounds like a nightmare
We went to Bali for 5 nights ( part of a longer holiday ) was a slightly longer flight
LHR to Abu Dhabi ( 7 hours ) then a further 9 hours to Bali
We spent the first 3 days on sun beds flopping about exhausted from the flight , the time change and the heat ( managed to drink a few cocktails though , but sights seeing , no )
We are in our 60s though

I’ve done 4 nights on the west coast of America a couple of times. DH has travelled to Asia on business for shorter time. It will be fine, it is what it is! It’s a long way to go but I think you’ll still have a great time. If you can get hold of any melatonin (it is prescription only here but OTC in some places) it might help with the jet lag!

JWR · 08/06/2025 21:31

It will be fine. I regularly do long haul trips for short periods, less than 48 hours in Kuala Lumpur is a regular one. Just follow local time and get to bed by 10pm with no napping during the day.

What are you flight times? If flying out on night flight you will feel a lot better for when out there, the jet lag and tiredness will kick in when you get back. If flying out on daytime flights then likely more of a struggle

It’s a morning flight on the way there.

Those saying they have done similar for work: did you fly business with a lie flat bed?

I have done Australia and separately the Far East for three or four days many times but it is a bit different when you have a lie flat bed for the flight and can sleep well. Plus lounges at the airports. Plus you aren’t trying to have fun: just do a good job and get home.

Koazy · 08/06/2025 21:38

You’ll be exhausted when you get back but should be okay there

Flying back day six - sorry mistyped. It’s 4 full days morning - evening in Bangkok.

There’s a reason it was cheap…. Can you stay awake the night before you fly so you sleep on the plane? Otherwise when you land at 6am you’re going to be desperately tired and waste your first day. Leaving you 2 days…

ScoliMum · 08/06/2025 21:43

We did 5 nights in Los Angeles (11 hour flight and 8 hour time difference).

We had an absolutely brilliant time and packed loads in, one of our favourite holidays by far - by all means go for it OP. As I always say, you can sleep when you’re dead! Try and stay awake on your flights to minimise jet lag when you land

onwards2025 · 08/06/2025 21:45

In the past year I've done a morning flight and an evening flight there - the thing with a morning flight is you lose the hours of nighttime you would normally sleep and effectively have 2 daytimes, we did manage though. Just took it easy first day, early dinner and went to sleep about 9pm, then up and out by 9am next day exploring

Have a great time, you can sleep when you get back!

Christwosheds · 08/06/2025 21:48

West is best, East is the beast .
That’s the jet lag rule. I think you can expect to be very jet lagged the first day but hopefully ok after that.
Did a similar journey a year ago but for ten days. The first two days I was very jet lagged but my late teen dds were fine, DH ok after one day but definitely still tired on day 2.

Noseyoldcow · 08/06/2025 21:49

Bangkok is terrific, and you’ve booked it already so here are some tips. Sleep as much as you can on the plane. Use earplugs, whatever, but get as much sleep as you can. It’s easy to get dehydrated on the plane, so make sure you drink plenty, and lay off of alcohol. It’s also very easy to get dehydrated in Bangkok, so again drink plenty. Water is good, but if you are sweating a lot and/or get a tummy upset, sports drinks maybe be the way to go. I never touch them at home, but they can be good in tropical heat. Work out what you want to see and how to get there, transport is easy with the skytrain and the underground. I particularly liked the temple with the giant golden reclining Buddha and the adjacent massage school, and the river ferry/bus is good fun and cheap. But don’t do as I did and fall asleep on it……The Eastern and Oriental is great for afternoon tea, and if you’re up for a cooking class the Blue Dragon is good. And last but not least….Enjoy!
