City break in UK

I’d appreciate some recommendations for a 2 night stay somewhere other than London for my daughter and I. She’s 30 loves a nice walk in nature or by a river some shopping and quirky cafes. We aren’t into the mother and daughter spa thing, but like theatre and cinema. We’ve done York and Edinburgh and she enjoyed them. She’s diagnosed ASD but isn’t particularly over sensitive to busy places if she’s with me. Any suggestions?

Bath?

LIZS · 07/06/2025 17:41

Was going to suggest Bath! Canterbury, Chichester, Chester

Liverpool.

Richmond in Surrey

Brighton! Lovely walks by the sea or South Downs. Loads of quirky cafes and amazing independent shops in the lanes x

Cambridge. Or Exeter.

Norwich

It really depends where you are, how far you want to travel & by what means.
Looks like you're in the North, so Bath, Brighton etc might be too far.

HeliotropeSachet · 07/06/2025 18:47

I also like Worcester.

Harrogate

Cambridge would be perfect. Great river walk, botanical gardens, lovely shops.

Manchester could be another shout, nice cafe scene, canals, best shopping outside of London/Edinburgh that I’ve found. Not sure about walks in nature in the city centre but you can get to places like Fletcher Moss Park easily on public transport. Some nice museums and art galleries if that’s of interest.

Liverpool
Nottingham

Some great ideas here. I think we’ll go with Brighton or Cambridge. I’m on it!!!

Buxton is nice, see what’s on at the opera house (rarely opera) and there’s a lovely French restaurant among other places to eat. The crescent hotel is a spa but really lovely anyway however the palace whilst “faded grandeur” and a not the best chain is actually good if for a reasonable price (often on those voucher sites, don’t book half board though!)

Her dad used to work in Warwick so we know the Leamington Spa area well. Lovely place, but been a few times. Buxton sounds interesting and not as far as Cambridge.

I’d be totally up for Creedence but she’s more of a Swiftie!

I've just been to Glasgow. Kelvingrove museum and good cafes on byres road, hunterian museum, loved the botanic gardens. We stayed at the Apex near the main shopping area.

Newcastle!

York or Chester in addition to those mentioned.

Buxton is much smaller and nowhere near as much to see or do.

Somewhere smaller, Malvern. Lovely walks along the Malvern Hills, if you have a car lots of interesting towns to visit.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 08/06/2025 17:24

Glasgow.

Edinburgh for history lovers. Bristol is good too. Lots to do.
