City break in UK

I’d appreciate some recommendations for a 2 night stay somewhere other than London for my daughter and I. She’s 30 loves a nice walk in nature or by a river some shopping and quirky cafes. We aren’t into the mother and daughter spa thing, but like theatre and cinema. We’ve done York and Edinburgh and she enjoyed them. She’s diagnosed ASD but isn’t particularly over sensitive to busy places if she’s with me. Any suggestions?

Shrewsbury is very nice and also Stratford on Avon.

Bristol is great. Really good food scene as well.

Buxton isn't very big.
Cambridge or Shrewsbury?

I'm not in UK, and have always wanted to see Oxford. I haven't seen it mentioned, so is it to be avoided? I want to do the Morse tour. Yes I remember back that far!

OP, I have been to Chester, London, Warwick, Bath,York, Conwy, London (of course) and loved them all. Cambridge will be on my list now also!

Norwich ticks all those boxes: walks along the River Wensum which goes through the city, theatres, 2 beautiful cathedrals, Jarrolds department store, the market, cafes.

Buxton is much smaller and nowhere near as much to see or do.

Would agree buxton is small, we've stayed a couple of times. Good walks and visits in surrounding area, bit small in itself
Agree with Chester, Stratford, Warwick, Shrewsbury.

Cambridge is a great call. You could go punting, walk along the river to Grantchester and have tea in the Orchard tea rooms.

There's lots of free museums - the Fitzwilliam, Museum of Zoology etc. The Botanic Gardens are lovely and have a great cafe. Hot Numbers is a great coffee shop near by.

Aromi (pizza and Sicilian goodies) and Jack's Gelato are lovely in the city centre.

The Arts Theatre is currently closed for refurbishment, but you could see what's on at the Corn Exchange.

Cambridge is very walkable, lovely shops, gorgeous architecture.

King's College Chapel is stunning.

Enjoy!

I like Oxford, it's definitely worth seeing once, those universities, that atmosphere.
However, the centre is kind of loud and busy and on the shopping streets you really could be anywhere.
I'd still recommend it though!

Glasgow (where I live!) is great.
Wild card idea - Inverness?

We really enjoyed Norwich too. Was coming on to recommend that.

Harrogate is wonderful

Lincoln - we had a lovely weekend there a couple of years ago. Stayed near the river and didn't use the car all weekend. Lots to do and see.

madaboutpurple · 12/06/2025 17:52

I agree Lincoln is very interesting.

Newcastle is a fantastic city.

Another vote for Shrewsbury, amazing Tudor buildings and not too busy, great independent shops and cafes too. Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire is beautiful, small but lots to see, do and eat and a lovely walk or bus/train to Todmorden, also independent shops and markets galore and surrounded by amazing walks.
