Would you detour on road trip?

We have a 3 week US road trip coming up for a big birthday
staying in 7 different locations so lots of moving round already.

on our last few days an 80s band I loved as a teen are playing 3 hrs away
we’ve already paid for our hotel so my options are:

don’t go and just enjoy the last few days of the trip
drive 6 hrs round trip
pay for another night in a hotel close to venue

WWYD????
thanks

Pay for another night close to the venue presuming that financially possible and works with flights (which given you mention as an option, I’m going to guess this does work for you)

Biropens · 30/05/2025 15:29

Is your holiday companion (s) also a fan?

princesspadam · 30/05/2025 15:30

Flights are irrelevant we have 4 nights in our last city, one of them being my birthday

DH deffo not a fan

And just him or others too?

either way… no I probs my wouldn’t then knowing my holiday companion wouldn’t enjoy

Biropens · 30/05/2025 15:35

Even if it was MY birthday!

Trentie · 30/05/2025 15:36

I’d go and pay for a hotel close to the venue if you’re able to afford it. Would your DH mind? If it’s a band you love and you’re on holiday, why wouldn’t you go?

princesspadam · 30/05/2025 15:38

I loved them as a teenager but they’re no longer really a thing
supposed to be good live

it means waking up somewhere unplanned on my birthday

no just me & DH

Surely a road trip is about being spontaneous and taking “detours”

wobblybrain · 30/05/2025 15:41

I absolutely would and my DH would be quite happy to tag along to something like that even if not a fan.

Yes that’s key

does your dh not want to go op? I know he’s not a fan but doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t happy to do this

I would pay for a hotel near the venue. Contact the other hotel and say that your plans have changed see if they will refund you. I had to check out a couple of days early from a hotel in the States and they automatically refunded me the nights I was not there. They said it was quite normal in the States and were surprised when I said that I had not expected a refund.

BaguetteLady · 30/05/2025 17:58

@princesspadam I loved them as a teenager but they’re no longer really a thing. Supposed to be good live.

Are there any recent reviews? Sometimes going back to something is not what you imagined it would be.

It's a lot of effort and re-jigging - I would try to check some recent chat or reviews.

princesspadam · 30/05/2025 18:45

The hotel refund won’t work as we would have to check out & in again a day later which is just hassle
reddit has said they’re great live and do all the old hits

EnglishGirlApproximately · 30/05/2025 18:46

We do of course need to know the band 😀

Yorkshiremum80 · 30/05/2025 18:49

I agree that's what road trips are for. Can is ask where you are going, we are looking at American road trips and I haven't a clue where to start.

It's a big birthday, it's a blast from the past, likely a one -off opportunity.
I would shell out for the hotel nearby. Too exhausting otherwise. Compared to the whole trip it's probably a small outlay.
You only go around once!

Loving these responses thank you

looks like I’m off for a love bite so best pour some sugar on me 😂

@Yorkshiremum80
we are starting in Austin Texas, doing a ranch after that, then onto lake Charles, New Orleans, graceland and ending up in Nashville

If they will never do a gig in the UK ever again, then yes, definitely spend a night there to see them.

Who are they 🎸 🥁 🎤 🎶?

From the clue the OP gave, I think it's Def Leppard.

Chaseandstatus · 30/05/2025 23:29

I would do this for Bros

but not Def Leppard

In that case, you definitely need to embrace your animal side and go. Why all the hysteria?!

BoredZelda · 30/05/2025 23:31

YABU for not saying who it is.

Ahh missed this. I absolutely would.

growinguptobreakingdown · 30/05/2025 23:32

Def Leppard would be great fun live but it depends how bigger fan you were/ are to make that trip worthwhile. I imagine seeing a gig in America would be a really memorable experience so if you both want to do it I'd book a hotel near the gig.
