DH wants a luxury beach holiday

Goingawayistricky · 28/05/2025 08:01

I need advice please.
We both work in jobs with restricted leave (I’m school he’s self employed but travel s abroad with his job). Therefore I am the master of short stay, quirky or last minute deals.
DH said last night he fancies going to someone “lovely”. St Kitts and Nevis appealed to him. He wants white beaches, blue sea and rum. He might also like villas over the sea apparently.

I am out of my comfort zone with this sort of holiday. Most of the online suggestions seem to be aimed at the US. I love America but less fond of Americans on holiday.

Where do I start? August is free. I don’t mind it might be low season due to weather.

Thanks for the alternatives! I shall look up Bermuda, Mauritius and Koh Samui.

@Changeusername8 I did say “on holiday” I used to live in Florida hence not being to concerned about August weather. Out of context the loudness grates. I am not a fan of Brits abroad either but that one seems to be ok to say ,

No it's not actually. I've been getting a load of wholly unwarranted crap for being English this week and it's been really upsetting. Behave.

Goingawayistricky · 31/05/2025 06:36

Wilson Island does indeed look gorgeous.
Will look at Antigua .
DH is sadly already booked for October half term but only London. So if I don’t get something booked for August that’s it until next year.

@Zanzara I’m not going to give Americans “unwarranted crap” on holiday though. I always behave with other people irl.

Indonesia is the driest part of South East Asia in August, there are some fab cultural sights and Bali and Lombok have good beaches. Research carefully though, as some parts really appeal primarily to partying Aussies.
I think Maldives and French Polynesia are the main places for over water villas, I like spending time in the Maldives, but you are confined to a resort, but it's a far cry from Disney. We have done it as a stop over both times, stayed 4 nights last time and 6 nights the first time, never done a long stay, 6 days was probably enough for me. Maldives could be combined with some time in Sri Lanka for some cultural activities. Lots of tour companies selling this combination of destinations. Both our visits to Maldives were in August, we had occasional showers but it was primarily dry and sunny. The weather seems good in the Seychelles in August, but I've not been.

We love the Caribbean, but if you want to avoid Americans, do not go there. I’ll agree, they’re generally very loud and obnoxious and it’s the only thing we dislike about a Caribbean holiday.

uh was the dig at Americans really needed? I can’t imagine someone saying love China not so fond of the Chinese. Love Kenya not so fond of the Kenyans!

Normally I would agree with you but Trump has changed everything.

How about the Seychelles?

I was thinking the same. I went in August about 20 years ago and the weather was lovely. The smaller islands of Praslin and La Digue were nicer than Mahe. There are also other things to do as well as sit on the beach all day and the food was amazing.

Trump in their president and now you can be discriminatory to an entire country full of people?? Nice. How do you feel about Russians on holiday?

Goingawayistricky · 31/05/2025 16:02

@Changeusername8 How exactly is it discrimination? I am not disadvantaging any American’s by my holiday.🙄

Anyway thank you to everyone who has offered genuine help. I think Antigua and the Seychelles are both the current favourites based on what’s available online. I am going to also ask in town as we have a good travel agency. Not used one since the early 90’s though.

You asked for vacation places without Americans?!? Replace Americans with Chinese people or Africans. It makes you sound terrible. Next time just try posting your question without the negativity

Goingawayistricky · 31/05/2025 16:27

@Changeusername8 change Americans for “people with kids” then? I don’t want young families on my holiday either. I love kids and been on holiday many times with mine and other peoples . It’s not want I want this year though.
It’s not disadvantaging them, it’s not discrimination which you are implying. No one is suggesting taking anyone’s holiday away because they are from the States.

If you can’t see the difference in saying I want an adults only vacation and ‘keep me away from this entire nationality’ then I really hope you educate yourself. Good luck avoiding people on your holiday!

Goingawayistricky · 31/05/2025 16:55

Well that’s your words.

My post said

You seem to have completely missed the “aimed at” aspect. You know how marketing to different groups ( is anyone allowed to be different in your world? ) works.
You might want to tell SAGA holidays to educate themselves for only allowing the over 50’s on their holidays.

I know you said you had a travel agent in mind, but we have used this company for standard “packages” to the Caribbean:
https://www.bestattravel.co.uk/holidays/seychelles

For something more bespoke, try Aardvark https://aardvarksafaris.com/destinations/seychelles/

(They mention kids a fair bit on their website because one of the owners had triplets, now well into their teens).

Have fun (I think we’re just going to Northumberland!).

Lakshadweep, off India.

Sea can be cold in Mauritius in August, but hotels are great. Seychelles will be great in Aug, but can be windy, lots of luxury resorts. August is the worst time to go to the Maldives, had friends who went and had 5 days of nonstop rain, we went over New Year and had a few rainy and overcast days. Zanzibar ?

Closer to home, look at Costa Navarino in Greece for August, lovely beach (not white sand but golden sand), great choice of hotels there and the area is not too touristy..

Edited to add, the W hotel at Costa Navarino is 12+, so not a lot of young kids

mistraly · 01/06/2025 00:18

If you do go to Caribbean in August, be very careful of the island you choose, we went to Turks and Caicos in July and stayed on Grace Bay which is stunning and would recommend, however the beaches on the other side of the Island were covered in Sargassum. We then had a few days in Miami on South Beach and couldn't get into the sea because of the blanket of seaweed..

https://theconversation.com/sargassum-is-choking-the-caribbeans-white-sand-beaches-fueling-an-economic-and-public-health-crisis-230954

Edited to add, there are facebook pages to follow where travellers post updated info on the levels of Sargassum, Tulum in Mexico is suffering the worst it has ever experienced.
