Would you pay £1000 for 5 nights self catering?

Have found a lovely but pretty basic airbnb. It’s an apartment in a posh house, so has use of lovely gardens and big pool. It’s in a very nice part of Cornwall in school hols. It’s £200 a night.

Train would cost us £100 each to get there. DP thinks I’m crazy to want to spend £1,200 for two people to go self catering to Cornwall for 5 nights.

Thoughts?

It’s probably about right. A premier inn in Sunderland is £170 a night on Saturday so?

Icanttakethisanymore · 30/04/2025 16:03

Doesn't sound particularly wild. What's his alternative plan? A hotel is going to be at least 150 quid a night and food will be extra. Going self catering means you can cook for yourselves a bit which I prefer - eating every meal out for 5 days is a bit much.

Gininvolved · 30/04/2025 16:05

Sounds absolutely fine to me.

if money is tight for you and you think it’s going to dominate the holiday then you probably should look for something cheaper.

life is expensive these days

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 30/04/2025 16:05

Just booked 2 cottages for week long school holiday breaks. The first cost 1500 and the second cost 1300. No pool though!

ThePoshUns · 30/04/2025 16:06

That’s pretty much average

Tea2cups · 30/04/2025 16:10

Sadly it is about right these days but also agree with your DP, it's insane when you think about it. Once you add food and activities, you could easily spend another £300-£500.

Mindymomo · 30/04/2025 16:10

We are holidaying in Isle of Wight in May, it’s £1400. In July we pay £2,000 for a week. We don’t go with AirB&B due to cleaning and service charges as this really pumps up the price. I don’t think Cornwall for 5 nights at £1200 is too bad.

ehb102 · 30/04/2025 16:14

We have paid more than that for a cottage in Suffolk.

Starlight1984 · 30/04/2025 16:18

Yep we're paying pretty much the same for a week in Cornwall this year (small cottage).

CarpetKnees · 30/04/2025 16:24

If you have to go in school holidays, and you are choosing to go to probably the most expensive area, then I would expect it to cost that much.

Personally, we tend to go to places that cost around £100per night (ie £50 each) as I'd rather go to places that are just as nice but cost less, so therefore we can go twice as often.

But we are all different.
If there is something about Cornwall that makes it worth it for you, then whether someone else would pay it or not is irrelevant.

Justploddingonandon · 30/04/2025 16:25

It sounds about average, although I would not recommend Cornwall in the school holidays if you're not taking children. Also depending on exactly where it is and what you want to do, you may be very limited without a car.

Turmerictolly · 30/04/2025 16:30

Cornwall is just about the priciest place to holiday in the summer. You could go abroad for less than that and have a pool too with almost guaranteed good weather. Or look at Pembrokeshire or the Gower or Northumberland for similar scenery/beaches. Still quite expensive but not as expensive as Cornwall.

Pinkdreams · 30/04/2025 16:34

Yes I would, purely because 2 years ago I paid 850 for all inclusive and it was the worst hotel, food everything I’d rather pay more for self catering and it be nice than cheap and not nice

minnienono · 30/04/2025 16:36

I wouldn’t because I don’t want to be making beds and cooking breakfast on holiday, id book a hotel which is likely to be cheaper and include breakfast

Can go out for breakfast

minnienono · 30/04/2025 16:38

Can you not fly somewhere for that??

Chewbecca · 30/04/2025 16:42

Price is normal sadly.

BeautifulFacesAndLoudEmptyPlaces · 30/04/2025 16:43

What does he expect to pay? Welcome him to 2025.😅

TianasBayou · 30/04/2025 16:45

Look into whether a Two Together railcard is worth getting to reduce the rail fare.

Dymaxion · 30/04/2025 16:55

Depends where it is really, if its slap bang in the middle of the county and in the middle of nowhere you are going to spend a lot of time stuck in traffic to go anywhere ? Plus having to drive if you fancy a meal out ?
Price wise I think its about the norm for Cornwall in the school holidays, you describe it as basic though, what do you mean by that ?

Movinghouseatlast · 30/04/2025 16:58

Yes, that's about tight for something like that. It sounds lovely!

WillItEverWork · 30/04/2025 17:04

It sounds about right, but I wouldn’t go to Cornwall without a car, I have relatives there and visit a lot, there is very little public transport and it also takes ages to get any where by car, let alone multiple buses and trains (if you can find any)

Mirrorxxx · 30/04/2025 17:11

I paid quite a lot more than that last week so I’d say that was a good price in school holidays

Movinghouseatlast · 30/04/2025 17:13

Not all holiday lets advertising on Air BnB charge a separate cleaning fee. The cost of cleaning is a fixed cost, some people roll it into their price. The same property on Air BnB or booking dot com will cost exactly the same, it's just on Air BnB the cost is presented differently.

It's useful for owners as its a way of being able to do a short break, as otherwise the huge cost of cleaning makes it not worth doing.

The cost to clean a 3 bed house in Cornwall would be at least £160 including linen.

BoarBrush · 30/04/2025 17:17

Personally wouldn't spend over £1k for accommodation in the UK for 6 of us for at least10 days nevermind that for just the pair of us for 5 days . Prices are fucking ridiculous in this country . Our 2 week all inclusive holiday is just over 5k.

I love Cornwall but suspect I may never visit again unless I win the lottery.
