Do you take all toiletries with or purchase in resort?

I'm going on a solo trip shortly for almost 3 weeks and I seem to be struggling with case weight (allowance 22kg).

I've bought everything toiletry-wise I'll need but due to it being mostly liquid, it's not leaving much weight for 3 weeks of clothes, shoes etc plus medication (I take a fair bit).

I know you can click and collect at the airport after security but that still means another bag to carry as it won't all fit in my carry on.

Do you take everything with you or buy it there? I don't usually have this problem but my breaks are usually shorter.

Bring a travel iron, they’re small but will work fine on linen.

Titasaducksarse · 25/04/2025 23:00

Are you sure you've not selected lbs on your scales instead of kg?

MindlessDaydream · 25/04/2025 23:02

Is your scale off? All that stuff shouldn't be that heavy

Goatblu · 25/04/2025 23:03

LadyGAgain · 25/04/2025 22:55

What everyone else has said and I’ve not read them all BUT, please please take your medication in your hand luggage.

My essential medications will be in my hand luggage but I also take other stuff such as pain relief, insect repellent, antihistamines and an ankle support in case my old injury flares up (it often does when I do a lot of walking).

I tend to take a small amount and buy more when I’m there but I’ll do some research beforehand to check where I can get stuff and what is available.
Have you got some really heavy shoes in your luggage? It does sound overweight for the amount you are packing. I shared a case with a friend last year for a city break and she had some wedges that didn’t make the cut because they were so heavy - god knows how she walks in them 🤣

This. We've just been away for 2 weeks and took 2 suitcases between 3 of us that included all clothes, shoes (multiple pairs each) and toiletries for everyone. We took more clothes per person than you've listed and still had loads of room/weight allowance left for souvenirs.

HeddaGarbled · 25/04/2025 23:06

I use the hotel shampoo, shower gel and moisturiser so I only need to take suncream, deodorant and toothpaste.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 25/04/2025 23:10

Start by weighing your empty case, OP. I think we'd all like to know what it weighs.
We went abroad last year for 3 weeks, which was a road trip plus a wedding. Each case was only about 17kg, plus hand luggage, and we did laundry once. Be realistic about how much shower gel , shampoo, moisturiser etc you will actually use in 3 weeks. I found a long time ago it's much less than I thought (I'll admit I'm quite low maintenance, to be fair!).

Nn9011 · 25/04/2025 23:12

I usually take my makeup as my liquids and then place an order for everything else as collection in super drug or boots, whichever is in the airport we're flying from.

rosemarble · 25/04/2025 23:15

There's no way that's 22kg.
It's hard to lift that weight (I know - I've been throwing 20kg medicine balls over my shoulder this week).

Bjorkdidit · 26/04/2025 05:41

I'm another one asking if you've accidentally selected pounds on your scales.

Because a lightweight case, sensible amount of clothes and shoes, other bits and pieces and even a kitchen sink of toiletries do not exceed 22 kg.

Four bottles of suncream will weigh just under 1 kilo, if you're struggling to visualise and I would take at least that amount if I could unless there was a proper local supermarket or Lidl I could use because I would rather avoid paying 20 euro for Hawaii Tropic that's been sitting in the sun outside the beachside shops or Spar for fuck knows how long.

You're not taking a dozen books that you haven't mentioned are you? If so, this is why you need a kindle if you don't have one already and want to read while you're away.

Massive hair dryer and straighteners?

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 26/04/2025 05:48

I love foreign pharmacies and supermarkets, so I always take the bare minimum and then indulge.

BoxOfCats · 26/04/2025 06:12

Are your scales correct?!

I'm a fan of solid toiletries for travel as they don't leak. Shampoo bars, conditioner bars... I even have a solid body moisturiser stick.

Skandar · 26/04/2025 06:49

Yeah, there's definitely something not right with your scales. I'm just back from holiday and took wayyyy more than you've listed, and my case weighed 17kg. My son's case had all our suncream, after sun, insect spray and beach towels (as his clothes took up little space) and his was 15kg...

When you say "toiletries" are you meaning something more than shampoo/conditioner, shower gel, sun cream, deodorant and moisturiser?

SchoolDilemma17 · 26/04/2025 06:53

Also don’t think your scales are right. I pack a lot more stuff, plus all the clothes for one of the children, sun cream for the whole family and then I get to 23kg.

Sakura7 · 26/04/2025 07:00

Yeah this doesn't make sense. I'm away for 10 days and have packed more clothes than you, along with toiletries and two bottles of sun cream and it comes to 14kg.

curious79 · 26/04/2025 07:01

Goatblu · 25/04/2025 22:23

Thank you. A few of the things are already 'travel sized' but some of the others, I will decant into smaller containers.

I'm not taking a lot of clothes (I don't think). 3 pairs of shorts, 5 vest tops, 3 swimwear, sarong, 2 dresses, 2 shirts, 2 skirts and one pair of trousers. I'm taking a pair of sandals and some water shoes.

I've never had this issue before and I've been away a lot so it's not making sense why I'm struggling this time but you've given me things to reconsider.

How is what you describe even close to 22kg?!

TropicofCapricorn · 26/04/2025 07:05

Well, how many toiletries have you packed? Some women seem to take dozens of bottles of lotions and potions.

Also another vote to check lbs/ kg

StarlightLady · 26/04/2025 08:41

It depends where l’m travelling to. I travel fairly regularly to Singapore for work reasons. I enjoy trying things not readily available in the UK. For some basics l hit Boots at the airport.

But my main policy is that, assuming you don’t intend to come back with 3 weeks worth of dirty washing, you don’t need more clothes for 3 weeks than you do for 1 week.

Daffodilsarefading · 26/04/2025 12:20

You can buy travel sized products in boots. This includes mini toothpaste, deodorants, etc. Aldi do mini sized sun cream. I take my own toiletries. I pack a lot more than you and I’m always under the 23kg limit.

Alwaysoneoddsock · 26/04/2025 12:29

I’m in awe of everyone able to pack everything you need for two plus weeks into a suitcase weighing less than 22kg. OP I always struggle. I have very sensitive skin and need to take lots of cream but I also take quite a few outfits and a selection of shoes - it’s all part of the fun !

Never forget you have to carry it!

I did 6 weeks in Asia with just a carry on!

BG2015 · 26/04/2025 15:55

I think it's very hard to get to your full 22kg in a case. We're sat in our hotel reception waiting to be collected to travel home from Egypt. 2 suitcases, one weighs 16kg and one weighs 17kg. We both bought plenty of clothes.
