Do you take all toiletries with or purchase in resort?

I'm going on a solo trip shortly for almost 3 weeks and I seem to be struggling with case weight (allowance 22kg).

I've bought everything toiletry-wise I'll need but due to it being mostly liquid, it's not leaving much weight for 3 weeks of clothes, shoes etc plus medication (I take a fair bit).

I know you can click and collect at the airport after security but that still means another bag to carry as it won't all fit in my carry on.

Do you take everything with you or buy it there? I don't usually have this problem but my breaks are usually shorter.

It sounds to me as if you are packing too much clothing and too many pairs of shoes. Also, all toiletries should be decanted into small bottles so you are only taking what you will use. Medication should be in your hand luggage in case your luggage gets lost.

I normally take solid shampoo, conditioner and soap they are really good for travel

Seeline · 25/04/2025 21:51

I take mine because I have allergies and can't just use any old shampoo/shower gel/ sun cream etc.
I pack a lot - always have to have a spare and something for all types of weather etc but have never come close to the 22 kg limit!

DappledThings · 25/04/2025 21:51

I take shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and sun cream. Use hotel's shower gel. Don't have any other toiletries. Are you taking a load of extra stuff you don't need?

Are you travelling about? What sort of weather? I would only take a pair of sandals and have those plus what I travel in for shoes.

Ponderingwindow · 25/04/2025 21:59

I am allergic to almost all toiletries so I have to bring everything I will need. That even includes the soap I will use to wash my hands while I am en route. I can’t pop to the shop and replace anything because I special order almost everything I use.

sometimes I have a box shipped to the resort in advance. It can be cheaper and easier than bringing everything myself. Though hotels have gotten stingier about accepting and holding packages.

Backbag · 25/04/2025 22:02

I take mine but really pare down what I use. So basically it's shampoo that doubles a shower gel, deodorant and a moisturiser that can be used for face and body. I buy sunscreen in resort. Plus lip balm and a light foundation.

ZenNudist · 25/04/2025 22:03

I just take a 100ml size shampoo and conditioner plus a full shower gel for the family. I take everything really but pack travel sized. If I am on my own I take smaller bottles

Bjorkdidit · 25/04/2025 22:21

I think you need to review what you're taking. 22 kg is a fair bit so plenty of room and weight for normal clothes and toiletries, sun cream etc.

Plus you'll have some hand luggage and what you're wearing and in your pockets.

I'd only struggle with that if I was taking sports equipment or a very variable climate where you need jeans and jumpers, plus warmer weather gear and waterproofs. Plus I always take toiletries and plenty of sun cream because it can be very expensive abroad.

If your medication will take a lot of room you can usually pack it in a separate cabin bag under special assistance - check your airline's rules. You also don't need to fit airport purchases in your carry on, it can go separately. Plus it could be that if you use most of your toiletries you could just leave them behind.

Goatblu · 25/04/2025 22:23

Thank you. A few of the things are already 'travel sized' but some of the others, I will decant into smaller containers.

I'm not taking a lot of clothes (I don't think). 3 pairs of shorts, 5 vest tops, 3 swimwear, sarong, 2 dresses, 2 shirts, 2 skirts and one pair of trousers. I'm taking a pair of sandals and some water shoes.

I've never had this issue before and I've been away a lot so it's not making sense why I'm struggling this time but you've given me things to reconsider.

I usually take it all because I like my own stuff and you never know what you will / won't be able to find. In your situation I would just pay for more luggage allowance (probably won't be much extra once you factor in cost of the toiletries you'd have to buy). Alternatively, I have lately started packing less clothing and taking a pack of laundry soap sheets instead. It's usually easy enough to hand wash a few things and rewear them, especially if you are going away for three weeks.

How can that weigh 22kg? I've been on 3 week holidays with much more clothing than that, including walking boots, waterproofs etc, and full sized toiletries and have never gone over about 17 kg.

Unless your suitcase is made of lead you won't be anywhere near the limit!
I take loads more, and I'm a larger lady so even my pants are 3x the size of my DDs, and I normally only get to about 16kgs.

This is what's puzzling me. I'm also taking a large pareo as I intend to spend as much time as possible on the beach and hotel towels are never big enough. It's made from cotton tho, hardly a weighted blanket!

I use very few toiletries and buy them there, bar some travel size toothpaste, sun cream to get started. So buy shampoo, toothpaste, suncream and moisturiser that's all I use

Edited

I'm going to repack (again) tomorrow, stripping back to the bare essentials. It's not making any sense so me, hence why I asked on here. The only thing I've packed that's different to normal is an extra bottle of sun cream, a sunblock stick and a box of plasters.

I'll handwash underwear, swimwear etc but the dresses, trousers and skirts are linen so I'm not sure I can be bothered with having to find an iron too.

22kg is a lot.
I had a luggage allowance slightly less than that for a very long haul (opposite slide of the globe) trip and I struggled to lift the suitcase.
I tend to overpack - there were definitely clothes that came back unworn.
I do decant toiletries and save useful travel sized stuff throughout the year.
If I’m two thirds or three quarters through a product, I throw that bottle in my travel stash and open a new one at home.

OudAndRose · 25/04/2025 22:44

BTW I am jealous of your three week lying-on-the-beach holiday OP!

MiddleAgedDread · 25/04/2025 22:46

How much does your suitcase weigh empty?
I always take my own as I have sensitive skin and im picking about what I use. Travel sized bottles might be light but they’re not likely to last 3 weeks!!

Phoebepeeby · 25/04/2025 22:47

I take make up but buy toiletries out there. I used to decant my own stuff but ended up having to buy more anyway.

It's a lightweight Samsonite one, can't remember the model but I bought it a few years ago because it was so light!

I take my own toiletries. But for 3 weeks I’d be doing laundry!

Turmerictolly · 25/04/2025 22:55

Surely there’ll be access to a washing machine/ hotel laundry service so you don’t need to bring so many clothes?

LadyGAgain · 25/04/2025 22:55

What everyone else has said and I’ve not read them all BUT, please please take your medication in your hand luggage.
