Attending Wedding Alone in Rural Rome - Logistics?? Help!

Hello,

Is there anyone who is familiar with Rome & surrounding rural areas that can give me some logistics tips?

I will be alone. I am comfortable in a foreign city (I'll spend time in Rome first, have never been, looking forward to it).

But I feel so unsure about being in a rural location for the wedding.

I will be arriving at this hotel on the Friday, arriving from central Rome:

On the Saturday I am attending a wedding at this venue:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/rPZP98tuo1FCNahW8

On the Sunday I am flying back to the UK.

This was the nearest hotel to the wedding venue. I haven't paid for it yet.

I am wondering if it is better to just stay in central Rome???? But then how would I get home on the night of the wedding??

But if I stay in the rural hotel... Should I just walk to the venue??
It's 15mins walk
Is it safe to do that on country roads in Italy? What about at night time?
What if I rented an e-scooter? One of the ones you stand on. I don't want to hire a car.
How would I get back to the airport from the countryside on the Sunday morning?

The couple are not the most helpful. I actually think this is not the most practical of wedding venues, but it is what it is!

Any help much, much appreciated. Thank you xx

Do you know anyone else who is going?

Hello, Thank you

I do. But. They are not leaving on the Sunday morning for example.

And not traveling from Central Rome on the Friday at same time as me.

I don't actually know where they are staying. I don't talk to them very often. Its a bit awkward for a few reasons.

You should be able to pre book a taxi - you could do it for both ways. I’d speak to the accommodation you are staying in. I’ve always found Italians incredibly helpful. I wouldn’t want to walk the roads by myself necessarily, especially late at night. I’m sure it would be fine but in the dark it is always dangerous with traffic. If you’re a competent scooter rider then that is how many Italians get about. Alternatively you could hire a bicycle but obviously would need suitable clothes. Or again you could book a taxi via your accommodation which would be my preferred option.

rookiemere · 12/04/2025 13:33

I was going to suggest what @Maraudingmarauderssaid - speak to your accommodation. They may well be able to organise a taxi for you.

I'll email them now.
I didn't do this immediately because my friend who is getting married said that taxis are not reliable around there. (Hence me thinking it's not the most practical thing.)

I'm honestly thinking to just stay in central Rome. It's only 30mins drive away.

When I've asked a couple of people from Roman, they've said they have never heard of this area! Which is crazy to me. I know every where rural within 30mins of where I live in the UK.

Hmm.

If I stay in Central Rome, the only taxi I would need to pre-book is the one home from the wedding, I think. I think that might be best.

I'm just scared it won't turn up and I will be stranded!

Theres loads of bus routes along that main road when you click on the bus stop icons, where do they go, look like they would go into Rome?

soupyspoon · 12/04/2025 13:40

There are no pavements on the road between the hotel and the wedding venue.

Yes, exactly, it's not practical is it 🙈

Its over 2 hours by public transport and looks a complete ball ache

I would stay in central/northern Rome, on the outskirts a little and get a cab. Its about a 40 min drive from northern Rome

CosmicScouser · 12/04/2025 13:42

I don't really want to do buses.
I don't fancy it with my luggage, in the heat etc. standing at the bus stop with no shade, I'm very pale and I burn. The wedding is in July.

Thanks so much. This is what I'm gonna do.
I'll pre-book a taxi to/from hotel.

And getting to/from airport will be nice and easy.Plus, I won't have to pack mid-holiday to go to the rural hotel either.

Thank you! Really appreciate it, it's been looming over me like "hmm, what am I gonna do????"

Exactly, get a hotel in the areas Farnesina or Tor di Quinto, stay there for the duration, enjoy Rome and just get a cab to the wedding.

Too much effort for me - do you really have to go? Could you break down on the way to the Airport and miss your flight?

Haha!

I do have to go. Complicated thoughts on it, though. But that's a whole other story!

I'm looking forward to exploring Rome tbh 😌

I've never been before. And tbh I haven't been abroad since 2022, and before that it was like 2016!

Actually Quartiere I Flamnio looks a better bet for the hotel, its near a tram line so you can get to and from the centre without having to walk around too much.

TickTockPolly · 12/04/2025 13:53

I’d go back to the bride and groom to ask what they suggest. The venue has no accommodation (or not enough for everyone), the walk is dangerous and taxis are unreliable … so what do they suggest to enable people to attend?

If you book a hotel in Rome and travel out to the wedding, ask the hotel if they can book/recommend a driver to take you to and from the wedding. Ideally you want someone to take you both ways. I’d book the return for earlier than the expected end time of the wedding so you have time if they are late etc.

Hugely helpful. Thank you.
I'm not a very experienced traveller!

Also I don't have much cash right now as just switched jobs. So I was initially thinking central Rome but it's expensive so this might be a bit cheaper. Thank you SO much for your input. Omg. It's amazing that there are such helpful people out there on the internet!

It's really impractical!!!!! I didn't wanna say anything because. Well. They're just not the most practical people anyway. And I don't want to be seen to be pointing out negatives due to some history that has gone on. Omg. Honestly.

I will do exactly that for taxi-booking. Very, very good point about the taxi timing. I don't wanna be stranded at some abbey in the middle of nowhere at midnight!!

Just a note about public transport and tickets. We bought 24 hour tickets at the ticket office. These must be validated as soon as you get on the bus/ tram.
What we discovered is that there are 2 machines. The one at the front entrance is for tapping your debit card only.
The one at the back entrance is for validating your ticket only.
We made the mistake of getting on at the front entrance. The bus was jam packed and I could not get to the back to validate the ticket.
2 police officers followed us onto the bus and asked for our passports, fined us 50 euros each. They also fined 2 tiny Phillipina nuns 50 euros each. If we had not had our passports we would have been arrested. ( Rome is heaving with priests, nuns and pilgrims this year because of the jubilee).
So be careful.

Omg. Harsh!!!!!!!! Wow. Okay. Thank you! I will adhere to the set up, and avoid arrest 🤣 can you imagine coming home with that tale to tell?!?!

Yes we saw 2 English people fined, taken off the bus by police. I hate that validation system because like you say if you cant get to the machine you cant validate the ticket
